But almost immediately after these petitions were delivered, Democrats and Republicans on the powerful Supercommittee each released their own proposals that would make large and painful cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

Their plans reach directly into the pockets of millions of Americans and take hundreds of billions of dollars from vital programs we all depend on.

The cut proposed to Social Security's cost-of-living adjustment (COLA)-which they call "a Chained CPI"-is nothing more than a yearly cut in earned benefits. It breaks the promise to not cut benefits for people currently receiving Social Security. The devastating cuts to Medicare and Medicaid in both plans are a matter of life and death for millions of Americans. Millions of children depend upon Social Security.
