Congress is Home on Recess ~

Tell them to protect children and families in deficit talks

August 24, 2011

Greetings!

North Carolina's Congressional delegation is back in the state for August recess until September 5. When they return to Congress, the debate will be all about deficit reduction.
Call your Congressman/woman and Senators today with these three key messages on protecting children and families in deficit negotiations:
  • Increase revenue:  Any discussions around the deficit should include revenue increases equal to spending cuts. Congress should cap regressive tax breaks and use some of those funds to expand policies that enable low-income families to save and build wealth.
  • Protect Medicaid:  It's unconscionable to decimate Medicaid -- the lifeline for seniors in nursing homes, children who need to see the doctor, and people with disabilities living in our communities -- while protecting tax loopholes for millionaires and billionaires.
  • Incentivize asset-building:  Ask your legislators to include inclusive asset-building policies such as an expanded Saver's Credit and asset limit reform in tax reform legislation.
 To contact your legislators:
  • Call the Capitol Switchboard at 202.224.3121 or through their local offices.
  • Their contact information can be found at  www.senate.gov or  www.house.gov.
We must speak up for children and families during these critical negotiations. If you don't, who will?

Sincerely,
