Contact U.S. Senators Hagan and Burr to Protect Children's Programs

July 5, 2011

Greetings!

The U.S. Senate cancelled an extended recess this week in order to continue working on a budget agreement. NOW IS THE TIME to contact Senators Burr and Hagan to urge them to protect children's programs in the 2012 federal budget agreement and in deficit reduction negotiations.

Contact Senator Hagan: Call 202-224-6342 or click to email

Message: The burden of deficit reduction must not be borne by children and low income families. Do not put spending caps on crucial programs like Medicaid that protect children's health. Do not cut critical programs for children and families like food stamps (the "SNAP Program"), education, Head Start, child care, jobs programs and low-income housing.

Taking health care from children is like taking candy from a baby

Background and Resources:

Medicaid:

NC is among the 10 states that would lose the most jobs and business activity if proposed federal Medicaid cuts are approved:

  • A 5% cut in Medicaid funding to NC would result in the loss of $942 million in business activity and nearly 9,000 jobs
Spending:
Spending cuts hurt the economy: States that cut the most spending during the recession have seen the biggest drops in private sector employment.
  • NC cut nearly 30% in state spending and has seen about a 3% decline in private sector jobs.
Children's Programs aren't the problem:
The Senate Appropriations Committee agrees that critical programs for children and families have not caused the deficit.
  • Funding for these programs has largely stayed flat for the past 10 years, while spending on mandatory programs and defense have increased substantially (32% and 74%, respectively) and revenues have fallen by 18%.
