Wine Appreciation Made Simple
Pour a half glass. Swirl, then inhale. Are the aromas sweet, fruity, intense? A human brain can identify 10,000+ smells.
Sip: Is it sweet, tart, bitter? Sweetness shows at the tongue's very tip. Natural acid tartness stimulates the tongue's sides. Bitterness, sensed in back, comes from alcohol and tannin extracted from grape seeds and skins. [Sour does not count - that indicates spoilage.]
Swallow. The 'finish' should be a harmonious balance of all components from aromas and 'mouth feel.' A lingering finish denotes quality, be it from 'expensive' or 'moderately priced' wines. Wines that are in balance show pleasant acidity and sweetness, soft astringency, and fruitiness not overpowered by oak.

Over 600 acres of Holden's 3,600 acres are dedicated to cultivated gardens, ranging from the formal landscape of Lantern Court to the wooded pathways of the Rhododendron Garden, where about 1,200 rhododendrons bloom each year. Lilacs in the Display Garden bloom in April and May.
The Holden Butterfly Garden, Wildflower Garden and Display Garden are a short walk from the Visitor Center. Further on, the Daus Overlook features views of the Pierson Creek Valley below, a favorite spot for birdwatchers. Kaleidoscope Quilts: The Art of Paula Nadelstern
On view at the Akron Art Museum June 18 - October 2, 2011 Internationally renowned quilt maker Paula Nadelstern has spent over two decades capturing in cloth the excitement of color, pattern and light of kaleidoscope images. Like kaleidoscopes, her quilts promise "surprise and magic, change and chance" and employ crystalline patterns composed of painstakingly assembled slivers of jewel-like fabrics that evoke the radiance, complexity and implied motion of kaleidoscope images. She creates that effect by employing a technique counterintuitive to the conventional quilt process: Nadelstern obscures the seams that join pieces of fabric. Akron is the only Midwest venue for this vibrant exhibition of 19 contemporary quilts and 12 kaleidoscope quilt blocks by Nadelstern, as well as an early 19th century star pattern quilt, contemporary kaleidoscopes and two rare early kaleidoscopes.
