Embassy Suites - Troy, MI

Embassy Suites - Troy, MIIDC has finished the extensive renovation of an Embassy Suites located in Troy, MI.  This eight floor, 251 Guest Suite hotel benefits from extensive modernizations, including a completely new Atrium.  In addition to the public spaces, all Guest Rooms and Guest Baths were updated with contemporary styles to meet current brand standards.  A dramatic new Atrium bar was constructed, and the top floor Guest Baths were converted to walk-in showers.  See more of this project in our Project Portfolio at http://www.idcconstruction.com.

The History of Hotels in America - Part 2 of 3

The "City Hotel", built in 1794 in New York, was the first "modern" hotel, in the sense that it was a building dedicated to the lodging, comfort, and entertainment of guests.  This model was hugely popular, and was quickly reproduced around the country.

The first "luxury" hotel was built over 30 years later in Boston, MA.  The Tremont House was a 170 room hotel built in 1829.  This luxury hotel, designed by Isaiah Rogers, was the first to offer amenities such as indoor plumbing, indoor toilets and baths, and running water.  The Tremont House also provided secure private rooms and free soap.  These amenities quickly became the standard in other "modern luxury hotels" around the world.

Buffalo StatlerThe next major evolution occured in 1908.  Ellsworth Milton Statler was an American hotelier that had made his name constructing large temporary hotels.  His first permanent hotel construction was the Buffalo Statler (pictured at right).  This 300 room hotel had many firsts.  It was the first to have a bathroom with running water in every room.  This was accomplished by the invention of the Statler Plumbing Shaft, which is still used in modern construction today.  He also offered a pen and paper for correspondance, a free morning newspaper, a light switch next to the door, and made sure the hotel was consistently clean and affordable.

His hotel was immediately profitable, and led to a chain opening hotels in Cleveland, Detroit, St. Louis, New York, Boston, Los Angeles, and Dallas, among other places.  His company, The Hotels Statler Company, Inc, was eventually purchased by Hiton Hotels in 1954 for $111 million, at the time the largest real estate transaction in history.
