Dear ,
I attended the American Chamber of Commerce's Annual Convention in early August in which over 750 chamber executives from around the world attended. With that many attendees, needless to say, it was a little over whelming but I was able to find our Massachusetts chambers on Thursday at lunch!
The keynote speaker David Novak, Chairman and CEO of Yum! Brands, Inc. was very motivating and an energetic speaker. The two other plenary session speakers were Katty Kay, BBC Correspondent and Rana Foroohar, Time Magazine Assistant Managing Editor in charge of economics and business. Both women were quite dynamic in their presentations.
Of the 30 available workshops I was able to attend four:
- Circle of Champions - Turning your Pipeline into Revenue
- Are They Buying What You're Selling
- Sponsor Fulfillment
- Recruit, Retain & Motivate your Leaders and Volunteers
Of course at any convention, what we learn is not always in the workshops but from networking. The camaraderie was amazing and everyone was so open about sharing information. While it was evident that all Chambers are experiencing economic challenges presented in our respective communities, it was also very evident how we are just as excited and energized in overcoming these economic barriers.
Exciting changes will be coming in FY2013 to make our Chamber even stronger. There will be new programs and more opportunities for member feedback that will bring added value to all our members. Remember - stay connected by supporting your local chamber!
Sincerely,
Kate Phelon
Executive Director

Catalyst Stage is a new theater ensemble that is performing on lawns and stages throughout Western Massachusetts this summer, including at the Westfield Athenaeum. Catalyst Stage will create an evening of classical one-acts when it performs Moliere's 'A School for Husbands' and 'A School for Wives' in the Florence Rand Lang Auditorium at the Athenaeum on Wednesday, August 29 at 7:00 p.m. These one-act plays by Moliere have taught past audiences important lessons about gender roles. They are sure to teach us about ourselves - including our own foibles and shortcomings - while we laugh at the excruciating circumstances of each character. Summer theater at its comical best! The performance is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served. For more information about Catalyst Stage's upcoming performances of 'A School for Husbands' and 'A School for Wives' at the Athenaeum, please call the Athenaeum at 413-562-0716 or visit www.westath.org.

Arbors Gives Back, the nonprofit arm of The Arbors at Westfield, your local assisted living community, is hosting our first Pink & Denim Dinner Dance, a casual fundraising event, on September 14th, 2012 at Tekoa Country Club in Westfield. We were inspired to raise awareness & funds by the courage of our fellow Arbors employees who are battling Breast Cancer, our treasured Arbors' residents who have survived Breast Cancer and the women in all of our lives who did not. Arbors Gives Back is a philanthropic organization dedicated to raising funds to serve the needs of the local community. All proceeds from this event will be donated to the Baystate Health Foundation through Rays of Hope. Along with ticket sales to the dance, our hope is to raise funds through a prize drawing that evening. We are currently soliciting donations from our valued partners and Westfield neighbors. In our fight against Breast Cancer, no gift is too small. Your donation entitles you to have your business's name listed in the program, displayed on a poster at the dance and announced during dinner. All donations to Arbors Gives Back are tax deductible. Our Tax ID # is 30-0609241. Please contact Nicole at The Arbors at Westfield, (413) 562-0001 or nsweeney@arborsassistedliving.com, with any questions to purchase tickets to the event or to arrange pick-up of your gift.

"Nature Reclaims History" - Arthur O'Leary
Take a walk back in time using an 1850 map to locate and identify man-made structures and learn the rich history of industry, home life and the stories behind the names. Travel old roads, trails and bushwhack in the Wildlife Sanctuary. This little known portion of Stanley Park contains the remnants of a canal, dams, mill foundations, an old channel of the Little River and footbridge abutments. Nature steadily reclaims these sites with successional growth, deposition, and weathering. Locate these disappearing sites in the remote reaches of the Wildlife Sanctuary, learn about John Munn's "Newfoundland", the Ruinsville Mill, Cotton Cooley's boarding houses, Cyrus W. Field, Jebediah Clapp, traumatic amputations at the Saw Mill of Lucas Cowles and other tales and verbal histories. Wear appropriate hiking attire and sturdy boots; bring water, camera and
binoculars.

TODD KIRTON EARNS LICENSED SITE
PROFESSIONAL CREDENTIALS
EXPANDING FIRM'S SITE REMEDIATION CAPABILITIES IN THE WORCESTER REGION
Todd Kirton, a senior hydrogeologist who has worked with Tighe & Bond for 17 years, earned his Licensed Site Professional (LSP) credentials earlier this summer. A resident of Holyoke, he works primarily out of the firm's Worcester, Massachusetts office.
Kirton has years of experience in the cleanup of oil and hazardous material contamination. As an LSP, he will also be responsible for developing and executing services for clients that satisfy the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection requirements to address site contamination in accordance with the Massachusetts Contingency Plan.
Kirton has conducted a variety of environmental site assessments and hydrogeologic investigations for many private and municipal clients throughout New England. His experience includes performing practical and innovative sampling and remediation activities at numerous release sites, and EPA brownfields sites, as well as preparing numerous reports in accordance with state and federal regulations. His experience also includes water source exploration and water use permitting for municipal and private clients.
Kirton holds a bachelor of science in geology from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. He is a member of the Licensed Site Professional Association, and the National Groundwater Association.
The Massachusetts Board of Registration of Hazardous Waste Site Cleanup Professionals licenses LSPs based upon education, experience, and passing an examination on applicable regulations and relevant technical issues. LSPs are required to maintain their licenses by taking numerous educational courses on the evolving regulations and related technical practice issues. There are only 550 active LSPs in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Tighe & Bond now has seven LSPs, and two Licensed Environmental Professionals (LEPs) in the State of Connecticut.
ZWIEGWHITE NAMES TIGHE & BOND A "BEST CIVIL ENGINEERING FIRM TO WORK FOR" DURING ITS 2012 NATIONAL SUMMIT IN SEATTLE
At its annual Best Firms to Work for Summit in July, ZweigWhite recognized Tighe & Bond as one of the best civil engineering firms to work for in the nation. The New England-based firm was awarded the eighth place spot during the event in Seattle, Washington.
ZweigWhite, the publisher of CE News, sponsored the event that celebrates the winners of its Best Firms To Work For competition and offers engineering and architecture firms a place to share strategies, successes and industry news. The yearly competition is based on business practice data collected from numerous participating firms across the country, including feedback solicited through an employee survey.
The competitive ranking that results is based on comprehensive evaluations of factors such as firm culture and workplace practices, employee benefits, career development and growth opportunities, compensation, performance and recognition, as well as recruiting and retention rates. All firms that apply for this prestigious ranking and recognition are evaluated against each other, not a set standard.
"Tighe & Bond's recognition as one of the best civil engineering firms to work for is a significant honor. It also exemplifies our ongoing commitment to create a working environment where all of our employees feel valued, and where they can see their contribution to the overall mission and success of the firm and our clients," comments David E. Pinsky, who is president of the firm that has received this distinction three times. "Our ability to recruit, develop, and retain the most talented staff is crucial to providing the high quality, responsive services that our clients have come to expect and deserve," he adds.
