Greetings!

Welcome to our first California Animal REhabilitation (CARE) newsletter, where you'll find the latest news about pet rehabilitation, valuable tips and hear about some of our wonderful patients and their personal success stories.

Sometimes our pets can be healthy for many years, running, jumping, playing without a problem.  But whether they're old or young, when a problem occurs and their ability to move becomes painful or compromised, it's never an easy time, and can often be overwhelming.  We opened California Animal REhabilitation to bring healthcare solutions which have been available to humans for decades, to pets and their owners.

The treatments pets receive at CARE are part of the emerging veterinary field of pet rehabilitation.  We're committed to raising awareness of treatment options because we know firsthand that, in a lot of situations, rehabilitation works.  We believe that combining the expertise of a veterinarian and a doctor of human physical therapy, both certified in canine rehabilitation and working together to develop each individual pet's customized rehabilitation program, offers pets their best treatment option.

Exercise your Pet Properly

Calavetti PolesJust as with humans, it's very important to keep our pets moving.  Exercise promotes better overall health, can prevent injuries and illness, helps with aging issues, and generally makes for a happier pet.

There are a few things to keep in mind, however, as you aim to keep your four-legged friend fit.

Paw Print EXERCISE DOESN'T HAVE TO BE WORK ~ Exercise can be a FUN part of your pet's and your lives together! Incorporate exercise into your daily routine by taking morning walks and workouts together, stretching your pet on an exercise mat after you've finished your stretches, or massaging your pet while relaxing together on the couch.

Paw Print WARM-UP ~ Would you set out to run a couple of miles without first warming-up?  Of course not!  Pet owners that drop their dogs into the dog park without taking a few minutes to warm them up are doing just that. Your dog is less likely to injure itself if you first take a few minutes to warm-up their muscles and joints.  Consider a 10-minute brisk walk before letting them run, jump and play. Afterward, make sure to cool them down with a 5-minute leisurely walk.

Sammi

Sammi was an active, happy 8 year-old Springer Spaniel, living with his mom JSammi and Momanie, dad Steve and the rest of his dog & cat family in Simi Valley. We first met him this March after he had suddenly become a quadriplegic, due to bone growing inside his spinal column and putting pressure on his spinal cord.  He needed intense rehabilitation following surgery, where his surgeon was unable to remove the excess bone.

While Sammi had a tremendous life force and will to move again, the prognosis for a complete recovery was bleak.  Full paralysis is, just as with humans, complicated and challenging to treat in pets.
