Pentathletes Return Triumphant!
The Minnesota Waldorf School's 5th grade pentathletes were welcomed in Southern Wisconsin by Zeus with great thunder and lightning. Zeus and Athena were impressed with the opening ceremony and blessed the athletes with great weather for the games. The games emphasize truth, beauty and goodness in all aspects throughout the year. This class of children gave its all in each event and truly connected with the Earth and Heavens. Athens, Sparta, Olympia, Ithaca and Thebes all competed in discus, 40 yard dash, Greco-Roman wrestling, long jump, javelin, and relay race. The students connected with the Earth and Heavens in discus as they released the discus into the sky. Spectators awed at the grace of the javelin throws as they landed into the Earth. With swift speed the children ran down the track with joy and form focused only on the finish line. They soared like eagles in long jump and wowed the judges. With great force they kept their golden ring in wrestling and gazed at their opponents. Mrs. Kane (Athens City State leader), parents and I were witness to the utmost truth and beauty throughout the entire three days. Eighteen MWS students were honored in the finals and ten received laurels. Five were for beauty and five were for truth. Balance is what the 5th grade is about and that is definitely what this class demonstrated. What I will remember most about the games is seeing the sheer determination and striving in each child to become his/her best. In the children's eyes, you could see the excitement as they watched their classmates participate. It was a great honor to see them excel after training hard all year! This miraculous event could not have taken place without all the parent help and class teacher, Mrs. Kane. Thank You all for everything seen and unseen!
I would like to honor each child for their amazing accomplishments throughout the year and at the 2010 Pentathlon. --Kurt Curtin, Movement Teacher |

Medieval Games Festival for MWS and CLWS 6th Grades
On Friday, May 21st, the 6th grade will participate in a Medieval Games festival with the City of Lakes 6th grade class at our school. Ann Meany (former MWS Movement teacher), Jason Burnstien (CLWS Movement teacher), and Kurt Curtin are planning the games. The festival will begin at 9:00 with a gathering and cooperative games. The day will end by 2:30 pm. There will be several events where the students will have to work together to overcome an obstacle. The day will also include archery, poetry, jousting and an opportunity for each to find nobility in this modern day knighthood.
The Code of the Knights
A knight is true to himself and to her kingdom.
His heart knows only virtue.
His blade defends the helpless.
His might upholds the weak.
His word speaks only truth.
His wrath undoes the wicked.
The right can never die,
If one man still recalls.
The words are not forgotten,
If one voice speaks them clear.
The code forever shines,
If one heart holds it bright. |

| Student Services Coordinator Position
Amy Stephens has decided not to return as the Student Services Coordinator after the end of this school year. We will all miss "Ms. Amy" and we are excited that she will still be part of the parent community! Thus, we are seeking candidates for the position of Student Services Coordinator. We have decided to divide this job into two part-time positions. This very important position is representative of the first face and the first voice (and the first with a band-aid or a kind word) in the school. The Student Services Coordinator is responsible for the front desk area of the school, telephone coverage, and meeting parent informational needs and questions. These two part-time salaried positions are for the school year (not including breaks) plus the week before school begins and the week after school ends. A full description of the position is attached here. Applications can be downloaded from our web site and should be directed to Melinda Lopes with a copy of your resume and letter of interest. Applications will be accepted through June 1, 2010. |

What is Biodynamic Agriculture?
From the Farmers at Philadelphia Community Farm
Biodynamic Agriculture (BD Ag) was given to the world by Dr. Rudolf Steiner, founder of Anthroposophy, a spiritual science (combining both natural and spiritual insights into life) in the 1920s, in response to questions and concerns from farmers about the degenerating soul conditions and the resultant consequences for the environment, animal, and human health. Dr. Steiner realized that human life in particular would be highly impacted by poor nutrition arising from these conditions. His insights into planetary and other cosmic forces, together with his high knowledge of natural sciences, gave us biodynamic agriculture. Life forces can be restored and maintained in the soil, particularly the humus layer where plants grow, by utilizing knowledge of animal, plant, and mineral preparations added to compost and fields.
Biodynamic agriculture provides a view of the farm as an organism; its individual organs are the fields, woods, pastures, animals, people, and plants. They work together to form a life supporting, living system.
We, at Philadelphia Community Farm, strive to work under the guiding principles and practices of biodynamic agriculture. If you would like to join the farm as a garden member or learn more about the farm through volunteering or visiting, please contact Deborah Dornemann at 715-294-1689 or email her at riseandshinelearning@yahoo.com.
