Spring Concert is May 7! Dress for Success!
The annual ensemble, choral and recorder concert will be held on Friday May 7 in the Festival Hall. All students grades three through eight participate in the concert as a part of the music curriculum. Please plan to have your student arrive between 6:30 and 6:45 p.m. for instrument tuning and warm ups. The concert will begin at 7:00. We remind all students and parents of the dress code for participants:
Boys: White shirt with collar (may be polo or dress shirt, short or long sleeved), tucked in. Black or dark colored pants (chinos or dress pants), worn at the waist. No shorts. Dark colored shoes if possible. Girls: White blouse with collar, short or long sleeved, tucked in or with a finished bottom hem. Black or dark colored skirt or dress pants. No prints or casual pants. Shoes with heels 2 inches or less. (Flats give the best posture for singing.) After last year's successful launch of the dress code, we have acquired a small closet of suitable clothing of various sizes (including a nice pair of boys' dress shoes) that we are happy to lend for the concert. Students and/or parents may come to the music room to check out clothing on Tuesdays or Thursdays during lunch recess or after school from 3:15-3:30. Please contact Ms. Dains or Ms. Pierce at home with any questions. Thank you for your cooperation, and see you at the concert! |

Thoughts on the Media Awareness Program
by Vaara Ostrin
Last Thursday, the parent council meeting was visited by David Maier who gave a presentation on media. I had been anticipating a list of facts and figures on the negative impact media has on our children. Shows how well I know Mr. Maier. Instead he offered images, stories and thoughts to ponder. The following is only a bit of what Mr. Maier shared with us.
Mr. Maier began with a quote: "What is it that we shall be engaged in to honor our humanity?" The image that followed was of the life of a medieval serf. (Everyone's go-to image when thinking of technology right?) In that period, he told us, there was little change for hundreds of years. Children grew up watching parents and grandparents doing the same work as their parents and grandparents. This everyday work was done with a deep wisdom passed down through generations and was imbued with intrinsic values. The practice of living in nature and working with nature gave life a rhythm and wove a web of purpose, of wholeness and sensibility that guided and shaped their society.
He continued by saying that when we are engaged in doing things of which only human beings are capable, we call upon our faculties in a specific way. Our senses develop capabilities beyond that of biological limitations. The ear of a musician differentiates not only the note, but the tone and timbre of an oboe versus a clarinet. The eye of a painter perceives the smallest detail of a flower.
What ever we practice perceiving we become more sensitive to perceiving. The perceptions become deeper, more subtle, and we see "more." In this way, what we engage in makes us who we are, therefore, what we engage in has the ability to honor what makes us uniquely human.
What children experience when they're young is very formative in developing these senses. When they engage directly with the richness of life, it allows them to deepen and sharpen their perceptions of the world and to re-create the world within them. The skills that they develop when engaged in the deep wisdom of activities that have intrinsic value are the basis for being human as well as the basis for evolving our human potential.
The evening was informative, inspiring and entertaining. I learned some facts, like I'm not supposed to use my cell phone in front of the kids, (tell me I'm not the only one in the whole school who didn't know that,) but the real gift was a deeper understanding for the values of our school. The question that will now govern my media choices for not just the kids but the whole family is not "why is it bad" but what could we be engaged in instead? The next morning was proof that at least some of it had sunk in. At 6:15 a.m., Joren questioned me on why he couldn't play with my cell phone. I answered in true early morning fashion with a sincere but poorly worded answer: because, I said, media takes up space in our brains that we need to save for beautiful things. I hope Mr. Maier would approve. |

Student Medication Information for
Pentathlon, Camping, 8th Grade Trip
Several grades will have overnight field trips or camping trips this spring. If your child will require medication to be given on a field trip, please pick up a medication authorization form from Amy Stephens. The completed form should be returned to her at least two weeks before the scheduled field trip so that the school nurse can compile the information and instruct the appropriate teacher. On the field trip, the medications will be kept with the teacher who will dispense them at the appropriate times. (The exception is asthma inhalers that may be carried by the student with prior approval.) If you have any questions, please contact Ann DePaolis-Jones, the school nurse, at the school on Thursdays from 10 am to 3:30 pm, 651-487-6700. |
MWS Summertime Family Camping Trip
Mark your calendars now for the annual Waldorf Family Camping Trip. The dates are Father's Day weekend Fri., June 18th to Sun., June 20th. This is a wonderful MWS tradition- a family camp outing for MWS families and friends at beautiful Whitewater State Park. There is (ice-cold) swimming and hiking at a mosquito-free park (honest, it is!). Whitewater State Park is +2 1/2 hours from the Twin Cities just west of Wabasha. We reserve a primitive group campsite and camp all together in a circle of tents. It is a lot of fun and often our site is filled to capacity so make your plans soon. Hobo pies, s'mores, a hand-pump for water, campfire singing, star-gazing, tadpole-catching are some of our favorite parts of the trip. Carole Anderson coordinates this trip. Reserve your spot with or ask your questions of her at 651-430-1825. |
Waldorf Schools of the Twin Cities will be at the Living Green Expo! Saturday, May 1 from 10 - 6
Sunday, May 2 from 10 - 5 at the State Fair Grounds.
