Visit www.MNWaldorf.org to find links for giving online or to download a pledge card. If you have friends or relatives who may want to give a gift, please direct them to the site or have them call us to arrange a contribution.
We appreciate your contribution. As important as the money raised, participation rates are carefully considered by outside donors. Here is a picture of participation rates by class and group for this year's campaign so far:

Crazy Hair Day-Grades 2nd*-8th: Friday, February 12th
Crazy Hair Day has become a Mardi Gras tradition here at MWS. This is an opportunity for each child to let their individuality and creativity shine! Beehives, mohawks, curls, & swirls of color are the order of the day. Students should choose a hair-do that will accomodate the afternoon Movement performance! Please remind your child that they will not be allowed to apply any hair products inside the school building or foyer: the cumulative effect can be overpowering! * note: the 1st grade will NOT be participating. |
March 12th Student Concert to Benefit Haiti

How I "Experienced Waldorf" by Ting Ting Cheng
This January, I experienced Waldorf for the third year in a row. This year, I enrolled in Science with Mr. David Maier and Games with Mr. Kurt Curtin.
What stood out immediately for me in Mr. Maier's science class was his insistence that his students observe and not immediately jump to conclusions. Our first experiment was to watch ice melt in a beaker, but we were not allowed to report that the ice "melted" (a conclusion). Instead, we had to report our observations that would lead us to that conclusion. We were being trained to see the world as a scientist does. This is only one example of what I experienced in this half-hour class. I also had the opportunity to see how Mr. Maier was able to link his science lesson to the historical period that his actual students were studying (the Renaissance) so that both Science and History suddenly became "alive" in the classroom. We were practicing science in the spirit of the Renaissance! Finally, we were given a beautiful explanation about the uniqueness of each snowflake-- how each snowflake makes it's own choices to become itself in the same way that individual's choices come to form each unique person. As I was leaving the class, I overheard another parent ask, "Can I audit that class?"
In the Games class, Mr. Curtin explained what he taught (and why) to each grade and, best of all, taught us how to play some games in the lower, middle, and upper grades. We played a chase game that involved counting and running to safety before being tagged and a clapping game as we sang a song. We divided into teams and made basketball passes and blocks. We tried our hands at juggling. We had so much fun developing our brains and social skills in this way!
Experience Waldorf is my favorite adult event at MWS so I plan to attend it every chance I get. It allows me a personal glimpse of what it is like to actually be a MWS student, it shows me firsthand how the Waldorf philosophy is applied and interwoven in every aspect of the students' education and the school's culture, and it constantly reminds me (particularly needed while in late winter doldrums) how awesome it is for my daughter to receive this Waldorf education. |

Donate your Time and Talents to the Frolic!
Procurement for the Frolic (coming up on April 17) has already begun, and donations have been arriving daily following a mailing to past donors over the last two weeks. We know that our parents are also a wealth of talent, and that community offerings of Great Gatherings, services and handmade items are a huge part of why our Frolic raised more than $40,000 last year!
What can you give this year? See one of our Procurement Coordination Chairs, Jo Ann Warren, Dawn Paulson and Norma Peterson or one of our Great Gatherings Coordination Chairs, Carole Anderson and Brock Christianson to brainstorm ideas or get your questions answered. Donation forms are available on the wooden table in the main entryway, or download a form now. See Liz Lacey-Gotz for packets that can be mailed or dropped off with businesses -- a hand-delivered request carries quite the impact and lets businesses know that MWS families are their patrons!
If you're interested in working on the Frolic committee (or just staying updated on the plans), please join us for this week's committee meeting at school this Wednesday, February 3 after drop-off.
Other upcoming Frolic committee meetings:
- Wednesday, 2/17, 7pm at Don Pablo's in Roseville (near Byerly's)
- Wednesday, 3/3, 8:30am at school

--Introduction to Wet-on-Wet Watercolor: Donna Webb
Please join accomplished artist and Spring Hill Waldorf Art Teacher Donna Webb for an introduction to this intuitive process of putting color to paper. This is a beginning class using the Hauschka Therapeutic Watercolor Painting method to discover the nature of each color and color mixing. This method of painting, a gentle introduction to the creative process, invites us to open to our unconscious, and through the process allows an image to emerge. The time spent with these pure colors and liquids is rejuvenating to the body and soul. No experience necessary!
Session 1: Tuesdays, 9-11 a.m. March 2, 9, 16, 23 at Minnesota Waldorf School
OR
Session 2: Tuesdays, 9-11a.m. April 6, 13, 20, 27 at City of Lakes Waldorf School

--Biodynamic Gardening in the Urban Landscape: Dennis Dietzel
This class may be an experience for your whole family! Gardening can be a joyful hobby, a way of producing food for ourselves and creating beauty in our environment. In biodynamic gardening this becomes an inner path that gives us a relationship to the life forces in our soil and food.
Week 1 We will look at how biodynamic gardening and farming differs from organic methods. How does the idea of the whole farm organism translate to an urban garden? What is going on with our seeds? How does a hybrid seed differ from an open pollinated seed or from a genetically modified seed?
Week 2 The gardener is like a mediator between the physical realities of the soil, moisture, air and warmth, and the cosmic forces of the planets, moon phases and elemental world. How do we develop our ability to bring these aspects into harmony? Participants will be invited to share their garden vision if they wish.
Week 3 As gardeners we are also alchemists, creating an environment where refuse can be turned into gold as compost. How do we work with this transformative process in the most effective way? In the "Agriculture Course", eight lectures given by Rudolf Steiner in 1924, he gave indications for preparations that are used in biodynamic farming and gardening. We will look at how these preparations are made and how they enhance the life in our soil and plants.
