Experience Waldorf: It's Your Turn to Come to Class!
January 23rd, 9:30 am to noon
Experience first-hand what makes the Waldorf curriculum so unique and engaging. Parents and interested adults can get a glimpse of what happens in the classroom through the grades by selecting two of six mini-classes. Learn to read with Ms. Garcia, discover science with Mr. Maier, get active with movement teacher Mr. Curtin, and more. Between classes, we'll host a panel discussion with faculty and alumni who will answer questions and share their insights. This is a wonderful workshop for parents of MWS students and also a great one to share with family and friends.
Help us spread the word about this amazing event by posting flyers at your favorite haunts. For more information contact Brenda Haak.

Ziggy and the Wheelchair Project
Check out the current issue of Renewal for a wonderful article written by former MWS faculty member, Mark John. Mr. John was the class teacher for the MWS Class of 2008. His article is about one of his students, Ziggy Norberg, and the "Wheelchair Project." The Wheelchair Project was an initiative created by Mr. John and Karen Urman, Ziggy's mother, to address social issues that developed in Ziggy's class during adolescence regarding having a classmate in a wheelchair.
"In the wheelchair project, the students chose to spend a school day, or twenty-four hours, or an entire weekend in a wheelchair... As the project went on, the consciousness of the students [towards Ziggy's needs] and their behavior began to change... The heightened social awareness carried over into the eighth-grade year, even though there was no specific reference back to the wheelchair project." |

Eurythmy Experiences
During the time that Claudia Fontana was teaching our Eurythmy block, she also offered an evening course for parents. Each week, we'll publish reflections on that experience as shared by the parents who participated. This week's article was written by Sarah Bowman.
I decided to participate in the six week eurythmy class with Claudia this Fall to better understand what my daughter (Elise, K-BH) was experiencing in school. I wanted to know what exactly eurythmy was and why the experience seemed so important to the faculty. Here is some of what I discovered through the experience.
Claudia began each class with a stretch and ended each class with the same short exercise. These simple movements helped me to place my intention at the beginning of class and to honor the work I did for that intention at the end of class. She demonstrated the various vowel and consonant sounds (through body gesture) that made up the basis of more complicated movement patterns we were to learn throughout the class. Most often, her gestures appeared simple, but they were quite challenging to create without her performing them with us. We tried out some of her prepared curriculum from different grades, but also learned some "adult" eurythmy. Live piano music (played live by Shelly, thanks!) provided an emotional focus as we moved through space.
I experienced eurythmy as being a kind of meditation. I felt I was practicing focusing on my body and on the space around me. I felt I was focusing on and bending a light within me to illuminate the space around me. This focusing felt spiritual to me, so that I felt that the intentional movements I made were reverent like a prayer.
Over the weeks, I noticed development in my awareness of how I related to space and to the others in our class. Although I mostly arrived feeling tired and drained from my day (dark and chilled), I always left feeling light and refreshed (illuminated). By the end of class I felt like we were all breathing together; relating to others seemed so natural, without any cumbersome awkwardness or anxiety. We seemed to come to an understanding that we can meet one another in an emotional space.
I am noticing that what my classmates experienced and learned from our class varies. I wonder how each parent would have experienced six weeks of eurythmy. I hope that sharing my experience will incite your curiosity about future opportunities to experience eurythmy yourself. We understand that Claudia will be returning this school year in the spring. Thank you Claudia for moving and breathing with us! |
Severe Weather & School Closings
MWS closes when weather conditions pose a significant potential hazard to life and safety. Generally, we follow the lead of the Roseville School District and close school when they do. Closing announcements are made in several ways: MWS Voice Mail: The voice mail system will be updated with a message announcing snow days or delays. Radio: 830 AM WCCO Television: WCCO Channel 4 (CBS) KSTP Channel 5 (ABC) KMSP Channel 9 (FOX) KARE Channel 11 (NBC) You may also sign up to receive email alerts of school closings and delays at: www.kare11.com Click School Alert and follow the prompts. www.MyFOX9.com
Click on FOX 9 Mornings and follow the prompts. We do not typically have late start days. If it is necessary to close during the school day, parents will be notified and children will be supervised until they are picked up. Please note: There will NOT be a special message if school IS in session. |

Educating the Emotional Brain: How Media Shapes our Culture and our Children-- Lecture by Dr. David Walsh
Wed., Jan. 13th 6:30 - 8:30 pm at the City of Lakes Waldorf School
2344 Nicollet Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55404 612-767-1550
Welcome to parenting in the age of Baby Einstein and Facebook! What's a parent to do under pressure from an increasingly wired social landscape for children? American children now spend more than 44 hours a week in front of a screen - texting, socializing, doing homework, gaming, watching movies, on the net -- more than any other activity except sleeping. In his presentation, Dr. Walsh will combine the latest discoveries in brain science with up-to-date research on the power of screens to shape culture and, potentially, what and how children learn. This presentation will:
-- Address the impact of media on children's health and wellness
-- Explain why it is crucial to pay attention to the role of media in children's lives
-- Discuss how media create and nourish a culture of disrespect
-- Share strategies to help parents navigate the world of screens and social media
David Walsh, Ph.D, one of the world's leading authorities on parenting and the impact of media and technologyon children's health and development, founded the National Institute on Media and the Family in 1996. Dr. Walsh is on the faculty of the University of Minnesota, and has published many articles in the professional and general press. He is active in many professional associations and is a licensed psychologist in the State of Minnesota. He is the author of nine books, including the national best sellers Why Do They Act That Way? A Survival Guide to the Adolescent Brain for You and Your Teen and No: Why Kids - of All Ages - Need to Hear It and Ways Parents Can Say It.

The Secret Life of Color: Painting Workshop with Donna Webb
Come learn about the world of color that your Waldorf children are painting and experiencing in school. This is a beginning class using the Hauschka Therapeutic Watercolor Painting method to discover the nature of each color and color mixing. This method of painting, a gentle introduction to the creative process, invites us to open to our unconscious, and through the process, allows an image to emerge. The time spent with these pure colors and liquids is rejuvenating to the body and soul. Thursdays, 12:30 - 2:30, 7 weeks from Jan. 21. (No class Feb. 18)
Class will be held at the Center for Wholeness in Edina, MN. Call 952-929-1559 for registration and information. Pre-registration is required. Cost is $105. All materials are provided.
Note: Donna Webb will teach a painting class for adults at MWS in March. Watch for details.
Donna Webb is an artist whose works are in the permanent collection of The Walker Art Center, The Plains Art Museum, and numerous private collections. She taught art at Normandale Community College for ten years and now teaches at Spring Hill Waldorf School, Novalis Institute, and privately at the Center for Wholeness. Donna's studies of the Hauschka Therapeutic Painting Technique became the cornerstone of her Master's Thesis on Wholistic Arts, blending art therapy with studio arts. She is currently studying the artistic and therapeutic work of Liane Collot d'Herbois.

Register Now: Psychophonetics Workshop
January 4 -10, 2010 Yehuda Tagar, Director of the Persephone Institute in Cape Town, South Africa, will be making a rare visit to the United States this January, when he comes to the Twin Cities. He will be giving several evening lectures, and conducting a weekend experiential workshop. He will also be available for a limited number of individual sessions. Mr. Tagar is an Israeli, who has spent the past twenty years in England, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, developing a process known as Psychophonetics, a modality of personal and spiritual development, based on indications of Rudolf Steiner. This process combines verbal as well as expressive, non-verbal modes of knowing and communication, namely: Sensing, Physical Gesture, Visualization, and the skillful application of the universal Sounds of human speech in order to enhance an individual's ability for transformation and self-development. David Horstmann, a local psychologist and marriage and family therapist for the past 25 years, and a student of both Anthroposophy and Mr. Tagar, finds Tagar's work unique, intellectually stimulating, and dramatically effective in breaking through unconscious patterns of thought, communication, and behavior. He feels that its deep connection with the work of Rudolf Steiner imbues it with a spiritual dimension that has long been lacking in Western models of self-development and psychotherapy. Flyers and registration forms are available on the bulletin board and from David Horstmann at davidwhorstmann@gmail.com.
