The Third & Fourth Weeks of Advent

At school, we mark the four weeks of Advent on each Monday in December with the lighting of a candle on our Advent wreath. Each week, we honor a kingdom of nature-- mineral, plant, animal and human-- until, at last, we have completed the circle. During the third week of Advent, we celebrate the animal kingdom and we add the third candle, lighting it to honor the animals which inhabit our earth. You might choose to celebrate at home by lighting a third candle and saying a verse, by adding small wooden or felted animals to your winter nature table.

A verse for the third week of Advent:

The third light of Advent

Is the light of the beasts

The light of hope that we see,

In the greatest and the least.

Next week, you may choose to continue this Advent tradition with the lighting of the fourth candle on the Advent wreath. In the fourth week, we honor humankind and the spark of inner light that each of us carries within. You might celebrate at home by offering compliments and appreciations to family members, baking treats for neighbors or by adding small dolls or figures to your nature table.

A verse for the fourth week of Advent:

The fourth light of Advent

Is the light of Man

The light of Love, Hope and Thought

To give and understand.

Kindergarten Festivals Wednesday and Thursday

The winter festival for Miss Brenda's class is Wednesday, December 16th, at 8:30 am.  Miss Eileen's and Miss Mary Lou's festivals will be Thursday, December 17th at 8:30 am. Parents are invited to join their children for a shared breakfast. Please bring one of your family's traditional holiday foods to share with the class.

PLEASE REMEMBER: The Kindergartens do not have school on Friday, December 18th.  You are welcome to bring your Kindergartner to the Shepherds' Play.  Please see item below for details.

THE SHEPHERDS' PLAY:

Friday, December 18th,  9 am

The Shepherds' Play is part of a cycle of three plays performed in the sixteenth and early seventeenth century by German immigrants to the small island of Oberufer on the Danube River. The plays are older, part of a widespread tradition in medieval Europe and Britain of dramatizing biblical events called Mystery, Miracle, and Passion Plays. They were intended to bring an experience and understanding of biblical events to the illiterate peasantry. The plays range from reverent to bawdy, often within the same performance. Remnants of the mystery plays remain in modern Christmas traditions: the song Hark! The Herald Angels Sing is from a mystery play, and the tradition of the Christmas tree is thought by many to have come from the Paradise Tree found in German mystery plays. The popularity of the Mystery Plays and others declined after the Reformation, in Protestant countries by official decree, and in Catholic countries as well. However, these well-preserved plays are still being performed in England and Germany, and are considered a window into history, everyday life, and religion.

For many schools, presenting the Shepherds' Play represents both a gift from the teachers to the children, and a message that goes beyond cultural or historical specifics to speak of "that Holy Thing which shall be born of thee. .." as the angel in the play says. Michael Miller contributed these thoughts about the play to Renewal magazine: "What Holy Thing is this? It is nothing other than that love which is able to "enter all the hearts of all the earth." In other words, that love which can only enter the world through the human heart, and without which the world must remain "faithless grown."

Holiday Acknowledgements:
Cards for Faculty & Staff

Each year, the Parent Council and class representatives provide holiday cards for all of the faculty and staff who dedicate their hearts and hands to MWS and our children. The cards can be found in a basket in Amy Stephens' office. When you have a moment, please stop in and sign the cards. If you would like to give a gift of money to your child's class teacher, you may leave it in his/her individual envelope. If you would like to give a monetary gift to subject teachers, coverage teachers or staff, you may place it in the collection box and the money will be divided among them. The contents of the envelopes and collection box are locked up each evening.

In order to facilitate the distribution of cards and gifts to faculty and staff on Friday, we will remove the basket at the end of the day on Thursday, Dec.17th.  Kindergarten cards will be removed Thursday morning before the Kindergarten winter festival.

You may also sign up to receive email alerts of school closings and delays at:
www.kare11.com
Click School Alert and follow the prompts.
www.MyFOX9.com
Click on FOX 9 Mornings and follow the prompts.

Register Now: Psychophonetics Workshop
January 4 -10, 2010
Yehuda Tagar, Director of the Persephone Institute in Cape Town, South Africa, will be making a rare visit to the United States this January, when he comes to the Twin Cities. He will be giving several evening lectures, and conducting a weekend experiential workshop.  He will also be available for a limited number of individual sessions.

Mr. Tagar is an Israeli, who has spent the past twenty years in England, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, developing a process known as Psychophonetics, a modality of personal and spiritual development, based on indications of Rudolf Steiner. This process combines verbal as well as expressive, non-verbal modes of knowing and communication, namely: Sensing, Physical Gesture, Visualization, and the skillful application of the universal Sounds of human speech in order to enhance an individual's ability for transformation and self-development.

David Horstmann, a local psychologist and marriage and family therapist for the past 25 years, and a student of both Anthroposophy and Mr. Tagar, finds Tagar's work unique, intellectually stimulating, and dramatically effective in breaking through unconscious patterns of thought, communication, and behavior.  He feels that its deep connection with the work of Rudolf Steiner imbues it with a spiritual dimension that has long been lacking in Western models of self-development and psychotherapy. Flyers and registration forms are available on the bulletin board and from David Horstmann at davidwhorstmann@gmail.com.
