Thank You for the Pumpkins!

Thank you very much to Ken and Jan Albrecht (parents of Kirsten Riehle) for their donation of pumpkins to the MWS students for Halloween carving. The children had great fun making their jack o' lanterns. For the past 15 years, the Riehle family has donated pumpkins at Halloween. What a wonderful gift!

Letters for each class should be coming soon via email from Becky & Phyllis about class assignments!   Please take the time to read through and contact your Chair(s) to get involved or for questions.

Much consideration has gone into trying to pare down the amount of volunteer hours needed to run the Fair.  Your time is important to us and it is essential that all slots on sign up sheets are filled.  Every parent is really needed to do the work that needs to be done!

All are invited to volunteer in other areas if your class assignments are full (you are not limited to just one)!

Spread the Word!
Posters and postcards are available on the front lobby table for community members to help get the word out! Take as many as you can post or drop off at your local coffee shop, the library, your preschool, yoga studio, or wherever you think prospective families might be visiting. It's a great way for families to get to know the school and our community, and increased enrollment helps in so many ways! Or, download a poster and print your own. Do email Liz or let her know if supplies run short or if there's anything else you need to help promote our Holiday Fair.

Help Us Make Gnomies
Each year, parents and volunteers make little felt and wool gnomes to be given away to children at the very popular Holiday Fair Gnome Cave. The more gnomies we have, the better-- two or three per family is about enough. Patterns, felt, embellishments and directions to make large and small gnomes are available in Amy's office. We have many kits-- older grades children love sewing gnomes and they truly are easy to finish! You may drop-off completed or recycled gnomes and pick up kits or patterns in Amy Stephens' office. Sarah Bowman will be making gnomes in the Parent Lounge on Mondays after drop-off until 10:30-- join her!

Bake Sale Goodies-- Start Your Ovens!
Now is the time to start thinking about what you'll make, bake or otherwise create for the Holiday Fair Bake Sale. In fact, since most baked goods freeze beautifully, now is probably a pretty good time to whip up a batch of goodies. The best way for us to have a successful bake sale is to have it overflowing with delicious things to eat. From candied nuts to marzipan piggies, from savory breads to sweet muffins, from jams and jellies to Byerly cakes -- we've enjoyed it all over the years and look forward to what you'll bring. The Kindergarten Bake Sale Coordinators will collect your offerings at school November 20th and 21st. Please label all items and identify ingredients.

Thank you to Ting Ting Cheng who will open the store on Wednesdays from noon to 12:30 for the shopping convenience of parents of half-day Kindergarteners. Thank you also to Anne Kramer who created the wonderful new curtain for the Store entrance. Amy Grove has joined the School Store team of Teresa Reid and Andi Guy. The Sense of the Meeting:
Social Renewal Through Consensus
Thursday, November 5, 2009, 7:00 pm
Waldorf schools around the world share a mission of social renewal through the education of children. Waldorf schools are self-governing and value the partnership among teachers, staff and parents in the development and leadership of the school. As educational institutions seeking to enliven the future through educating young people in freedom, Waldorf schools often use consensus decision making in an effort to practice and embody the type of collaborative leadership that draws from the wisdom of many to create the best possible course of action.

Consensus decision-making builds unity and effectiveness in organizations of all kinds. At its best, it creates opportunities for personal growth and social renewal, strengthening individuals in discernment and compassion while building community in the group. As a form of group striving, consensus helps groups to bring minds, hearts and wills together on the issues the group is facing. Hear from a master teacher and facilitator why Waldorf schools use this challenging and fruitful process for decision making.

Caroline Estes has more than 40 years' experience working by consensus and training others in the process. Alone and with colleague Lysbeth Borie, Caroline has worked with a wide variety of not-for-profit, educational and business organizations, including the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA) and more than 30 Waldorf schools. The suggested donation is $10. Please contact City of Lakes to reserve your space: 612-767-1550. City of Lakes Waldorf School, 2344 Nicollet Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55404.

Save the Date: Psychophonetics Workshop
January 4 -10, 2010
Yehuda Tagar, Director of the Persephone Institute in Cape Town, South Africa, will be making a rare visit to the United States this January, when he comes to the Twin Cities. He will be giving several evening lectures, and conduct a weekend experiential workshop.  He will also be available for a limited number of individual sessions.

Mr. Tagar is an Israeli, who has spent the past twenty years in England, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, developing a process known as Psychophonetics, a modality of personal and spiritual development, based on indications of Rudolf Steiner. This process combines verbal as well as expressive, non-verbal modes of knowing and communication, namely: Sensing, Physical Gesture, Visualization, and the skillful application of the universal Sounds of human speech in order to enhance an individual's ability for transformation and self-development.

David Horstmann, a local psychologist and marriage and family therapist for the past 25 years, and a student of both Anthroposophy and Mr. Tagar, finds Tagar's work unique, intellectually stimulating, and dramatically effective in breaking through unconscious patterns of thought, communication, and behavior.  He feels that its deep connection with the work of Rudolf Steiner imbues it with a spiritual dimension that has long been lacking in Western models of self-development and psychotherapy. Further information regarding times, locations, and costs will be forthcoming.  Contact David Horstmann with questions at davidwhorstmann@gmail.com.
