Notes from the Nurse: H1N1 Influenza, Medications H1N1 Influenza: We are starting to see an increase in the number of students with influenza-like illness (ILI) in the Roseville district. If your child has fever greater than 100 degrees and either a cough or sore throat, your child is considered to have an influenza-like illness. Your child should stay home for at least 24 hours after his or her fever is gone without the aid of fever reducing medicine. Children under 5 years of age should stay home for 7 days from the onset of illness or 24 hours after acute symptoms are gone, whichever is longer.
We are keeping track of students with ILI and will need to report to the Minnesota Department of Health if a threshhold number of students are affected. Please help with this reporting by notifying the office on a daily basis if your student has ILI. You should specify if your child has a fever of over 100 degrees and whether or not s/he has a cough and/or sore throat.
School Medications: All medications dispensed at school must be provided by a parent/guardian. Medications must be in the original labeled container and have your child's name on it. This includes Ibuprofen, Tylenol and other over-the-counter medications. Please stop by the office to complete a medication authorization form if your student will need medication at school. Prescription medications need a signature of parent/guardian and physician. Over-the-counter medications need a signature of parent/guardian only. We are able to fax the form to your student's physician for signature if you provide the name and clinic of the physician. I am at school every Thursday beginning at 11 am if you would like to discuss your student's health. Thank you, Ann DePaolis-Jones Licensed School Nurse

Dress for Warmth
As the the old North Wind and Jack Frost make their way back to Minnesota, please remember that MWS students spend some portion of each day outside and need to be dressed appropriately. Children attending Extended Care before and after school may need extra layers for these brisk mornings and early evenings. If your child has an extra clothes box in the classroom, be sure to swap out summer apparel for autumn layers!

School Directory Coming Soon
Opt Out/Opt In Options
Deadline: Oct 2nd
As we put together this year's school directory, we'd like to hear from you. Last year, we published email addresses along with each family's listing and received very positive feedback. Please let us know if you'd prefer us NOT to publish your email address. Also, several families requested that a cell phone number be published with their listing. If you WOULD like a cell phone published, let us know by October 2nd. So, opt out for emails; opt in for cell phones! Send an email to Amy Stephens with your preference. |
Celebrate Community: All-School Meeting
October 8th 6:30-8:30 pm (Note time change!)
6:30-7:30pm All-School Meeting
7:30-8:30pm "Say Yes to No" -- a presentation by Erin Walsh from the National Institute on Media and the Family
Please plan to attend this important all-school meeting to learn more about how the parent realm supports the work of the school. Parent Council and the Board will talk about what's happening this year, their role in the school, and how parents can get involved. Plus, we'll hear a brief overview of the budget and financial state of the school.
After the all-school meeting, stay for an enlightening presentation from Erin Walsh of the National Institute on Media and the Family, a research think-tank on issues related to growing up in a media-filled environment. This year's topic, "Say Yes to No," is relevant for parenting children of all ages. The presentation given by this group 3 years ago is still being talked about in the halls of MWS. Don't miss it!
Because the content of this meeting is so important for all families, we ask that at least one parent from each family attend this event. This meeting will start on time, as we have a lot to cover before the 7:30 speaker.
This event is for adults only. |

Subject Spotlight: Handwork with Kristi Fackel
Handworkers in all grades have been busy already! The 1st grade plant-dyed & fingerknit wool. Soon they will learn to knit with help from the 5th grade. 2nd and 3rd grade students are finishing up projects from last spring before beginning their new projects. They are eager to see what they'll learn next!
The 4th grade has been thinking hard about color and what it can tell us. They carefully drew patterns for a decorative panel and now are learning how to cross-stitch their designs onto their handwork bags-- whew!
In 5th grade, the students are learning to knit in the round and just last week, dyed the wool they'll use to knit their socks. 6th graders are in the early stages of doll-making while 7th graders are sewing and embellishing a secret project for another class! Soon, they'll begin felting.
Finally, the 8th graders have learned all about the sewing machine and its history within the context of the Industrial Revolution: a savior to homemakers, the beginning of the end for professional tailors. The class looks forward to buying fabric for their quilts next week! |
|
JoAnn Fabrics Coupons Sought
If you receive the JoAnn Fabrics circular and don't expect to use the coupons in the next several weeks, the 8th grade handwork class would appreciate having them. As their sewing block begins, they will be heading out to JoAnn's to choose and purchase fabric. The coupons will really help. You may drop them off with Amy Stephens or Kristi Fackel. |
The Phonebooks to Footstools Program
Do you need those phonebooks that still get delivered to your house? If not, we'd love to put them to good use. Wrapped in duct tape, they make great footstools for students whose legs dangle while sitting at their desks. You may drop off new (or gently used and not too dog-eared) phonebooks in the box in the Educational Support Office and know you made a student more comfortable!

Friday Gatherings: All Are Welcome
Each Friday afternoon at 2:30 pm, grades 1-8 gather in the Festival Hall to share songs, poems, and snippets of what they've been working on in class. A faculty member gives a brief "Picture of the Season" and we end the assembly around 3 pm with a group song. You can expect 1 - 3 classes to share something each week. Parents, friends and extended family are welcome to join us. |
Parent Council News
Last week's Parent Council meeting was well-attended and lively. Parent Council and Class Reps were announced-- a list of may be found in the right hand column of this newsletter. We are still looking for volunteers for 5th and 7th grades. Minutes of the meeting may be found in the Update notebook in the Parent Lounge and on the website.
Two committees were formed. The first will coordinate enrichment and education opportunities for MWS parents. They will host a "think tank" brainstorming session on Oct. 17th (see below). The second committee will work on updating/publishing the MWS Parent Handbook. If you have an interest in either of these groups, contact the committee chairs: Pamela Isham & Vicki Dunlop (Enrichment) or Ben Richards (Handbook).
Parent Enrichment Ideas Wanted
Please join the new Parent Council Think Tank for a morning of exploring what does parent "education/enrichment" mean to you and what is your vision for the community in 3 to 5 years. This information will be the genesis of a new Parent Council Committee that focuses on enriching the parent body and strengthening ties within our community. We will be meeting on Saturday, October 17 from 10 to noon at school. If there's enough interest, we can arrange for childcare, so let us know. And if you have ideas to share but cannot attend, please get them to Pamela Isham pisham@ishamconsulting.com or Vicki Dunlop bvdunlop1@msn.com. |
MWS Calendar Online
The school calendar is available on-line as a Google calendar. As soon as dates are announced for parent meetings, field trips, festivals, class plays, etc., we post the details there. For 7th and 8th grade sports, we even attach a map to the game site!

Help Spread the Word!
We know more families would love our school if only they knew about it! We need everyone's help to get the word out about our wonderful school.
- Talk to friends and share your enthusiasm for our school
- Take some flyers to put up at neighborhood coffee shops, libraries, co-ops, community centers, restaurants, yoga studios, etc...
- Take a few postcards and keep them handy - you never know when you'll meet someone who wants to learn more about MWS. (All of our enrollment events are listed on the back.) Posters and postcards are in the lobby. See Liz if you need larger quantities or if the supply has run out. Thank you so much for your help!
