News from the Minnesota Waldorf School August 26, 2009
Back-to-School Picnic is TODAY at 4:30pm!

Join other MWS families for a potluck picnic, socializing and fun TODAY, Wednesday, Aug. 26th, from 4:30-7:30pm! It's a great chance to renew friendships, greet new families and welcome the first days of autumn. Come early to play, but be sure to be there by 5:30pm when the 'greeting and eating' portion of the picnic begins. The picnic is held at Roseville's Central Park on Lexington Ave between County Rd B2 and C. See your flyer from the August mailing for more info, or contact Ben Richards, Parent Council Chair, at 651-233-9098.

Advertise in the Parent Directory!

This year's Parent Directory will once again include 'Pastel Pages' -- our version of a business directory. If your business appeals to Waldorf families, or you would like to make your services known to our community in an uncluttered environment, this is a great opportunity. Deadline to apply for advertising is Sept 14th! For more information, download a form and fax it to 487-6800, or contact Development Director Liz Lacey-Gotz at 651-487-6700 x244 or by email.

The Kindergarten Cottage Progresses... See the new space on Sept 14!

The building of a beautiful new early childhood building is nearing completion. Check the web site for updated pictures or stop by and see the progress.

An all-school open house and building dedication is being planned for Sept. 14 after school. In addition, a special blessing time for the Kindergarteners and their families will take place first thing in the morning on their first day. This gives them a very special 'first peek' at their new classrooms!

Contact Development Director Liz Lacey-Gotz or Parent Council Chair Ben Richards if you'd like to help with the all-school open house by baking treats, setting up, or tearing down.
Parent Council News

Parent Council met on Thursday, July 23rd to discuss the Kindergarten Cottage, New Parent Orientation, the Back to School Picnic and more. Board and Faculty updates were provided and a handout detailing the role of the Parent Council Representative / Class Representative was examined. Thanks to all who attended! Complete meeting minutes from the most recent meeting will always be available on the web site link to "Parent Council News" near the upper right corner.

Wanted: Class Representatives for 1st and 5th grade! Curious? Please contact Ben Richards (Parent Council Chair) immediately.
Capital Campaign Underway!

A group of dedicated community members is forming to conduct a capital campaign to seek financial support for the Kindergarten Cottage and related projects. We hope these improvements will help us attract and retain students, strengthen our curriculum and faculty, and build a strong future for MWS. Geothermal heating and other environmentally friendly initiatives will be possible if we band together and seek grants and community support.

We received exciting news early this week of a $15,000 challenge grant to help raise funds for geothermal heating in the new building. Watch your email box for more news on this very soon...

While the project is being funded primarily by refinancing and the elimination of rent for the Upper Grades modules, we hope to gather even more financial support to strengthen our cash flow and financial health as we move into our 29th year as the Minnesota Waldorf School!

Interested in working on this effort? Contact Chair Tom Steinmetz or Liz Lacey-Gotz at the school.

If you didn't get a handout detailing all the exciting news, pick one up in the school lobby, check out the display board by Liz' office, or download a copy from our website.

Volunteers Found! A Few Still Needed!

Thank you Kaisa Mackie, Vicki Dunlop, Kim Schmidt and Jolynn Schulte for volunteering to help with important work at MWS. Kaisa has taken on the role of Enrollment Data Support, Kaisa and Kim will be spearheading a SCRIPs program, and Vicki and Jolynn will be helping as Web Site Assistants. In addition, Vicki will be helping create web content to keep us connected with our alumni!

Thank you also to Denise Harrison, who has been photographing faculty members for a display to help new parents learn who's who among the teachers and administration staff!

We still need help for the following positions:
Contact Liz Lacey-Gotz in the Development Office or email her for more information.

Holiday Fair Chair/Co-Chair
This position oversees and helps motivate all the chairs from the various class assignments, plus handles logistics for the Fair, including layout and rentals. This is a fun position for two people to share, and having a Chair or Co-Chairs in place is necessary for the event to happen in 2009!

Thank You Assistant
The Frolic alone generates more than 300 thank you letters! Thanking donors and volunteers is so important and so simple, yet it takes time. Do you have one day per month to help keep us up-to-date on our thank you's? Basic computer skills like Excel and Mail Merge helpful, but training can be provided to a willing volunteer.
