Housing Summit on Pine Ridge
Housing Summit 1Re-Member took a major step this year toward its goal of building homes on Pine Ridge.

After many months of meetings, planning, and hard work, the first annual Housing Summit took place at the Porcupine Pow Wow Grounds on June 10-11. This endeavor was begun under the direction of Paul Iron Cloud, Director of the Oglala Sioux Tribal Housing Authority as a beginning to bring in other entities to help address the housing crisis on Pine Ridge. The organization of the event was taken on by Judi Cornelius, a native of Pine Ridge who has returned home, and Tom McCann, Executive Director of Re-Member. Judi brings amazing energy and a background in organization.

Housing on Pine Ridge is in a dismal state. Recent studies show that more than 5,000 new homes are needed right now. The homeless on the Reservation are invisible, as inherent in Lakota culture is the concept of taking in people who are in need of shelter. This results in many people residing in tiny, inadequate houses. Because the need is so great, no one organization, governmental entity, or person can do it all. From Tribal Government, to Federal Agencies, to nonprofits like Re-Member, all must work together toward addressing this overwhelming need. This led to the formation the Oglala Lakota Home Coalition. The Coalition will become a coordinating entity, bringing all groups who work on housing issues together. It will publish a booklet with information on all such groups, and facilitate better communication. Our goals are no less lofty than a unified effort to build affordable, sustainable, low-maintenance, energy efficient homes across Pine Ridge.

This is the first time in the history of Pine Ridge that organizations, both governmental and nongovernmental, have come together as a cohesive group. All those in attendance realize that only by working together can life improve on Pine Ridge. And only by working together can we all, finally, meet the housing needs for the Oglala Lakota Nation.

Caitlin & Ashley

Third year Re-Member interns Caitlin Arnold and Ashley Hilbrand.

This year, Ashley Hilbrand was an intern here at Re-Member for her third summer. She made her first trip as a volunteer with Grant United Church of Christ in 2004. Ashley keeps coming back because of the Lakota people she met and her belief in Re-Member's goals.  Also, she says, "the kids are fantastic." At our Sunday Community Dinners in the summer, Ashley travels with a large crowd of local children. After Ashley's second year as a volunteer, her group leader encouraged her to apply for a job. Ashley decided that one week just wasn't long enough to get the full picture.
Ashley is now a senior at Hope College, double majoring in chemistry and psychology. She is in the process of applying to medical school and hopes to become a pediatrician and practice medicine here on Pine Ridge. A spring break trip through Hope College took Ashley to an Indian Health Service Hospital on the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation in New Mexico. The hospital and overall healthcare system inspired Ashley's passion to do all she can to make it better.Ashley 1

Caitlin Arnold
made her first trip to Re-Member in 2001. She learned about a culture that was out of the public eye and had the chance to play with kids that took her heart. She promised to come back, and has been keeping her promise every year since. Caitlin became a summer intern in 2006. She made deeper connections with the staff and the people of Pine Ridge, focusing on building bridges. Caitlin pours her heart into her work at Re-Member on job sites, in the workshop, and even on weekends. On her only day off each week, Caitlin organizes Bingo games for the elders at the Cohen Home for elders in Pine Ridge. Caitlin quickly discovered that she could "breathe easier out here" and was able to focus on what was really important.
Caitlin is studying nursing at Western Michigan University and, after seeing the condition of Pine Ridge's healthcare system, intends to work here as an Indian Health System nurse. "I know I can't change everything," Caitlin admits, but she's ready to work side by side with the people who are making strides every day toward building a better system.

Running Through Re-Member
On the evening of July 7, Re-Member had the opportunity to briefly host 20 runners from Peace and Dignity Journeys. They are participating in a run that began on May 1 in Arctic Village, Alaska, and will end on November 13 in Kuna Nation, Panama. When they arrive in Panama, they will be met by a group that began running from Tierra Del Fuego, Argentina.

The 2008 Peace and Dignity Journey focuses on the sacred sites throughout the Americas. Just prior to visiting Re-Member, the runners spent time at the Mass Grave at Wounded Knee.

"Indigenous people are facing threats to their culture and existence in a battle against corporate capitalism that sees to exploit traditional land that is held by the sacred people."

While the runners were fed and watered, their leader gave a short presentation about their incredible journey.

Kiksuya is a Lakota word meaning "Remember."  To Re-Member means to put back together that which is broken apart.  "Re-Member" reminds us to recall the unfortunate history of the treatment of the Native Peoples of our country, and in particular, that of the Lakota People of Pine Ridge Reservation, and to reconstruct the broken pieces of that relationship.
