| Meet a Member - African Soul, American Heart |
The mission of African Soul, American Heart (ASAH) is to shelter orphans in Southern Sudan. Inspired by Joseph Akol Makeer, a Lost Boy of Sudan, Fargo man, NDSU graduate and now, U.S. citizen, who dreamed of helping today's Sudanese orphans, we traveled to the refugee camp where Joseph lived for 11 years and the village he escaped in 1986 at age 10 to record this story on film. There we learned thousands of orphans in the village of Duk Payuel had little hope for the future working for their keep, unable to attend school, without adequate food or clothing.
Upon our return we founded ASAH as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. Our immediate goal is to identify families caring for orphans, determine the extent of their poverty and the safety of the orphan, and provide aid tailored to that need. Our intention is to keep the children in a family environment where possible and to evaluate the need for a facility to house children who can't be provided for in any other way.
To support our fundraising efforts, we show our award-winning documentary, African Soul, American Heart. An exhibition of photographs, Images of Duk Payuel, Sudan, taken by our board president, Deb Dawson, and sponsored by Concordia College, is traveling through our region. Along with DVD and photo sales, we offer Joseph Akol Makeer's book, From Africa to America, the Story of a Lost Boy of Sudan, to help people understand what led to the dire situation in Southern Sudan today.
For more information about ASAH, contact Deb Dawson at 701-478-7800 or visit the website. If you are interested in having your nonprofit featured in an upcoming newsletter, e-mail NDANO. Requests are honored on a first-come, first-served basis. |
