Form 990 filing tips and FAQs: related organizations
The IRS is providing a series of filing tips and FAQs to help Form 990 filers complete an accurate return. Today's Form 990 tips and FAQs address questions pertaining to Form 990 reporting of arrangements between a filing organization and related entities. Schedule R is used to report information regarding related organizations and certain unrelated partnerships. The tips also address general reporting requirements for group returns.
Proposed regulations clarifying procedures for authorizing church tax inquiries
The IRS and Department of Treasury have issued proposed regulations under IRC Section 7611 to clarify the procedures for authorizing church tax inquiries and examinations. The proposed regulations replace references to positions that were abolished under the IRS Restructuring and Reform Act with references that are consistent with the statute and IRS's current organizational structure. Written or electronic comments and requests for a public hearing must be received by November 3, 2009.

This educational website, developed by IRS Exempt Organizations, features an online version of the IRS's popular workshop for small- and mid-sized 501(c)(3) organizations; as well as mini-courses on various topics of interest to exempt organizations, including deductibility of contributions, applying for exemption and foundation classification, and applying for exemption. | Impact Institute seminars scheduled around state |
The "Board Basics" series "High-Performing Boards: Governing for Superior Results" will be offered in September. The seminars will cover the basic roles and responsibilities of a nonprofit board of directors, focusing on practical skills, tools and concepts to help participants clearly grasp the powerful potential of boards. The training will be led by an experienced, senior-level consultant with decades of nonprofit management experience. Seminar dates and locations include: Sept. 14 - Fargo, Sept. 15 - Bismarck, Sept. 16 - Minot and Sept. 17 - Grand Forks. This seminar runs from 3-7 p.m. Dinner and refreshments are included with the $25 registration fee.
"The Nonprofit Strategy Revolution: Real-Time Strategic Planning in a Rapid-Response World" will be offered in October. This training will equip participants to begin their own Real-Time Strategic Planning (RTSP) process with or without the help of a consultant. The training will be led by an experienced, senior-level consultant who has personally facilitated dozens of strategy engagements and was part of the team that developed the RTSP methodology. This seminar runs from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Lunch and refreshments are included with the $25 registration fee.

KIDS COUNT releases dataThe 2009 North Dakota KIDS COUNT Fact book is now available online. The 15th annual publication provides profiles of child well-being for North Dakota created by the eight planning regions and all 53 counties. The six components of child well-being are demographics, family and community, economic well-being, education and early care, health, and safety and risk behaviors. View the fact book here.
Census toolkit available
The Nonprofit Voter Engagement Network recently released "A Census Toolkit for Nonprofits." This kit, available in hard copy, on CD-ROM and online, features everything a nonprofit needs to get involved with the 2010 Census. Contents include color prints of its popular factsheet series (English and Spanish), sample Census forms, Census Bureau partnership form, sample map of hard-to-count populations and many more resources on an accompanying CD-ROM. Grant Writing Workshop in Fargo | Sept. 24-25The Fargo Police Department and Grant Writing USA will present a two-day grant writing workshop in Fargo Sept. 24-25. Beginning and experienced grant writers from area nonprofits will learn how to write winning grant proposals and find grant funding. NDANO members receive a special tuition rate of $375. This fee includes the class workbook and an accompanying resource CD packed full of tools and more than 200 sample grant proposals. Seating is limited, and online reservations are necessary. Northern Plains Initiative Conference
* Mobilizing Rural Communities - Billings, Mont. - Oct. 7-9
The Northern Plains Initiative Conference kicks off Oct. 7 with an Asset Building Summit. The summit will highlight model programs across the region focused on increasing assets for low- and moderate-income families and will end with state asset-building coalition meetings to plan future strategic initiatives. The actual conference, titled "Mobilizing Rural Communities," is held Oct. 8-9. The conference is geared towards community businesses, organizations, leaders, policymakers and funders who are intent on building thriving and sustainable rural communities.

| Meet a Member - Parshall Resource Center |
Parshall Resource Center's (PRC) mission is to:
* Promote community-based recovery opportunities
* Develop, nurture and implement a culturally relevant residential recovery program for individuals addicted with the disease of alcoholism and substance abuse
* Incorporate and utilize cultural/traditional events, daily living skills, educational activities and therapeutic community service support systems.
* Provide a strong foundation for individuals to overcome defaults of character and empower all people with success in "wellbriety."
PRC utilizes a "strengths based approach" to offering guidance and direction. Natural supports are viewed as just as important as professional intervention in case management and the development of "individualized recovery goals." PRC believes in the value of "Therapeutic Community Service Projects." It envisions the pooling and networking of limited resources to benefit individuals and community, whereby enhancing the continuum of care for individuals in need of PRC's scope of services. Its objectives are to empower individuals to live productive alcohol and drug-free lifestyles and be an asset to themselves and their community.
PRC's goals:
1. Provide a long term, clean and sober residential setting for men and women with chronic substance abuse/dependency problems. 2. Provide residential component combined with clinically managed low intensity outpatient, intensive outpatient or day treatment. 3. Provide an atmosphere that promotes empowerment, self-sufficiency and maintains support for individuals seeking recovery. 4. Allow those who have participated in multiple treatments to have a period of transition and help them in returning to the community, affording them an extended period of time to establish sound recovery and a solid support system. 5. Promote healthier lifestyle choices for individuals with substance dependency problems.
