NDANO award nominations due April 30
NDANO invites you to submit nominations for the Walt Odegaard Leadership Award and the Innovation Award, which recognize the efforts of those involved in the North Dakota nonprofit sector.

The Leadership Award is given to an individual who has made a difference by strengthening the North Dakota nonprofit sector through leadership, volunteerism and/or philanthropy. Last year's winner was Orlin Backes of Minot.

The Innovation Award is given to a nonprofit organization that has taken the initiative to demonstrate community leadership and build partnerships. Last year's winner was The Village Family Service Center of Fargo.

The application deadline is April 30. Take the time to nominate a worthy individual or organization to showcase to others the value of nonprofits in the state.

Meet a Member - Companions for Children
Companions for Children's mission is to create one-to-one relationships between an adult and a youth from a single parent home. The concept provides the youth with a greater opportunity to grow into an emotionally healthy, productive adult. The organization's vision is to assist children who are dealing with the difficulties created by having limited access to one or both parents. Companions for Children provides this assistance by finding a caring, responsible adult (referred to as an Adult Companion) who can serve as a friend and confidant to the child and ultimately as a role model.

Companions for Children serves its community, region and state by helping children make good choices about education and showing them how to avoid drug and alcohol use, violence and other detrimental behaviors. Studies have shown children involved in mentoring programs are: 46 percent less likely to begin using illegal drugs; 27 percent less likely to begin using alcohol; 52 percent less likely to skip school; more confident of their performance in school; 1/3 less likely to react by hitting; and more likely to get along better with families than children not involved in mentoring programs. It has also been shown for every dollar spent on mentoring programs, there is a corresponding savings of $1.50 in law enforcement expenses.

Learn more about Companions for Children by contacting Billy Seright at 701-838-5784 or visit the website.
