| 990's Do Matter scheduled for Jan. 27 |
|
Among the many challenges you will face in the coming year as a nonprofit leader is a significant revision of your primary reporting form, the Form 990. The IRS has completely overhauled the Form 990 effective for years begun after Dec. 31, 2007.
NDANO is pleased to bring the 990's Do Matter workshop to Bismarck on Jan. 27, 2009, from 1-4:30 p.m. to help nonprofits prepare for these changes.
The new 990 goes well beyond the Form's previous and narrow focus on organizational finances. Now, more than 75 percent of the form asks for non-financial information. It is essential that filers (and their advisors) understand the multiple aspects of the new Form.
The presenter is Eve Borenstein, who has taught Form 990 essentials for almost two decades to nonprofit organization managers and consultants, as well as to the CPA community. She co-chairs the American Bar Association Form 990 Task Force and helped the IRS develop the redesigned Form.
Register today for the 990's Do Matter workshop. The cost is $30 for NDANO members and $50 for nonmembers. AFP members may register at the member rate. |

| Presidential Inaugural Committee invites nonprofits to host day of service events in January |
|
NDANO was contacted by the Presidential Inaugural Committee and asked to forward the letter copied below. It invites nonprofits to organize community service events Jan. 17-19 and post them on a national website.
December, 2008
Dear Friend,
Every time our nation faces crisis, our national experience has shown Americans rise to the challenge. While government has an important role to play in helping rekindle our economy and addressing the problems of a distressed nation, President-elect Obama believes each of us, as Americans, have a responsibility to do what we can for our communities and fellow citizens. We are one nation.
The United States is once again at a crossroads and that is why the President-elect hopes to use the occasion of his Inauguration to rally our nation to commit to service in our communities. We are asking for your organization's participation in meeting this challenge. In 1994, Congress transformed the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday into a national day of community service to further commemorate a man who lived his life in service to others. As a tribute to that legacy and the very real needs of our nation, the President-elect and Vice President-elect will launch a national organizing effort on the eve of their Inauguration to engage Americans in service. This national day of service will fall on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, January 19, 2009 and, unlike past calls to service, President-elect Obama will ask Americans to do more than just offer a single day of service to their cities, towns and neighborhoods. He will ask all of us to make an ongoing commitment to our communities. Never has it been more important to come together in shared purpose to tackle the common challenges we face.
The call will go to all Americans to organize service projects and join others at events in their communities on January 19 or the weekend prior to, Saturday, January 17 or Sunday January 18. As the Co-chairs of the Presidential Inaugural Committee, we invite you and your organization to join other Americans to organize service projects in your communities. The Presidential Inaugural Committee will offer Americans a new website to help promote your events and for Americans to make their commitments, build communities, find opportunities to serve and share their results. These can be events that orient people to your organization's work, engage people in direct service, or bring people together to reflect on Dr. King's legacy and how they can commit to becoming more engaged citizens. To submit a service event that you will help organize, please go to http://pic2009.org/newevent.
We have a great opportunity to set the tone for the next four years and I know you will rise to the challenge. Thank you for all your support.
Sincerely,
William M. Daley Patrick Ryan Penny Pritzker Julianna Smoot John W. Rogers, Jr. |

Eastern Dakota Housing Alliance |
|
The Eastern Dakota Housing Alliance (EDHA) is a Community Housing Development Organization, created in 1998, to foster the development and preservation of affordable housing in eastern North Dakota, a 25-county predominantly rural service area.
Programs include: 1) financing new construction and rehabilitation of multi-family rentals; 2) providing down payment assistance for income eligible home buyers; 3) developing affordable home ownership properties; and 4) offering flexible financing opportunities to emerging affordable housing developers through the Community Loan Fund.
EDHA has lent over $2 million for new construction or preservation of multi-family rentals, leveraging nearly $18 million in development costs, creating over 170 affordable units. Forty two-home ownership properties have been constructed for income eligible buyers. In most cases, these are new owners who are building equity, and communities have new properties on previously vacant lots. All projects are on a community partnership level. EDHA does not own properties, but as a nonprofit affordable housing developer, works with local entities to create housing units that are considered affordable for the area. Creating affordable housing units, rental or ownership, enables lower wage, under-employed, fixed income and other income eligible families quality shelter without undue cost burden and within acceptable income guidelines. Establishing partnerships within communities builds skills for local housing problem solving.
Learn more about the EDHA by contacting Grace Backman at 701-364-2833. If you are interested in having your nonprofit featured in an upcoming newsletter, e-mail NDANO. Requests are honored on a first-come, first-served basis.
