It's time for bold, proactive leadership
This is the call from Tim Delaney, president and CEO of the National Council of Nonprofit Associations, to nonprofit leaders across the country. Delaney writes:

"These are the times that try men's souls," wrote Thomas Paine in 1776 when helping to launch American independence. His words still ring true today, given the current economic despair and growing uncertainty about the future. Our families, colleagues, constituents, friends and neighbors feel threatened. Everyone yearns for earnest leaders who will show the way to a better collective future. Today's positional leaders seem nervous, however, frozen in place, fearful to step forward. Who will provide the bold, proactive leadership our communities need in these trying times? Nonprofit leaders can. We must. For our communities, nonprofit board members and staffs can initiate bold, proactive leadership in these ways: rally to unify our communities, engage in public policy and tell our story persuasively.

Below are a few ways that NDANO is taking on Delaney's call to action.

Engage in public policy
North Dakota's legislative session is only two months away. NDANO is gearing up for the session, ready to inform you about potential legislation that impacts the entire state nonprofit sector in its weekly Legislative e-Update. We also encourage you and your organization to get active and advocate for your cause. Here are some websites and tools to help:
     * Register as a North Dakota lobbyist - ND Secretary of State
     * Understand the legislative process - ND Legislature
     * Know your legislators - ND Legislative Assembly
     * Know the lobbying rules for nonprofits (yes, it's legal) - Center for Lobbying in the Public Interest and Alliance For Justice

Whether you're new to public policy or have been an active advocate for years, there's a new website on "Effective Advocacy at All Levels of Government" from CLPI and the Kellogg Foundation. Sample advocacy plans, lobbying rules and how to make a case for advocacy are just a few of the subjects covered by this website.

Tell our story persuasively
NDANO is working on a new report on the North Dakota nonprofit sector, which will highlight the number and diversity of nonprofits in our state. We plan to release the report in January, the first month of the state legislative session. The report will be distributed to policymakers at the federal, state and local level, media and nonprofits. We hope the report will help you tell your story as an organization and our story as a sector to your stakeholders.

Keep us informed
Does your organization have a great story to tell? Have you had a public policy success or are you working on specific legislation? Are you uniting your community around an important issue? NDANO is interested in learning about the good work your organization is doing. Let us know by e-mailing or calling 701-258-9101 or 888-396-3266. We want to hear from you.

990's Do Matter workshop coming to Bismarck
Among the many challenges you will face in the coming year as a nonprofit leader, you need to be aware of a significant revision of your primary reporting form, the Form 990. The IRS has completely overhauled the Form 990 effective for years begun after Dec. 31, 2007.

NDANO is pleased to bring the 990's Do Matter workshop to Bismarck on Jan. 27, 2009, from 1-4:30 p.m. to help nonprofits prepare for these changes.

The new 990 goes well beyond the Form's previous and narrow focus on organizational finances. Now, more than 75 percent of the form asks for non-financial information. It is essential that filers (and their advisors) understand the multiple aspects of the new Form.

The presenter is Eve Borenstein, who has taught Form 990 essentials for almost two decades to nonprofit organization managers and consultants, as well as to the CPA community. She co-chairs the American Bar Association Form 990 Task Force and helped the IRS develop the Redesigned Form.

Register today for the 990's Do Matter workshop. The cost is $30 for NDANO members and $50 for nonmembers.

Meet a Member - Greater Grand Forks
Community Service Program
The mission of the Greater Grand Forks Community Service Program is to evaluate the risks and needs of adult offenders in order to safely place them within Grand Forks and the surrounding communities to work community service as not only a benefit to the public, but to also provide offenders with an opportunity to exhibit contrition, reparation and compensation for the crimes they have committed and act as a deterrent to future criminal acts.

Clients referred to our program to work community service as part of a court sentence or in lieu of paying probation supervision fees, provide an average of 12,000 hours of labor annually to nonprofit and government agencies in the counties of Grand Forks, Walsh, Steele, Traill and Nelson. While contributing to the area in a postive way, clients are able to continue to work, attend college or care for their families. Many clients are ordered to work community service in lieu of serving time in jail, thus saving the taxpayers a great deal of money that would be required to house, feed and supervise them. In addition, we provide drug testing for clients who are required to submit to random drug testing as a condition of bond as well as clients referred by Social Service for drug testing.

Through both programs, we strive to help clients remain crime and drug free; but also, hold them accountable by reporting continued drug use or failure to comply to the referring agency.

Learn more about the Greater Grand Forks Community Service Program by e-mailing or calling 701-775-3403.

If you are interested in having your nonprofit featured in an upcoming newsletter, e-mail NDANO. Requests are honored on a first-come, first-served basis.
