Customized Medications to Enhance Dental Care

dental-familyModern procedures now render most dental therapies "painless" - even the once-dreaded root canal.  Customized medications can be compounded in strengths, flavors and dosage forms that are not commercially available to further enhance patient comfort and provide solutions to problems affecting the mouth.

For example, we can compound:
· lip balms for viral lesions (cold sores)
· transdermal (topically applied) muscle relaxants/analgesics to relieve pain and spasms in some cases of TMJ (temporo-mandibular joint) disorder
· topical anesthetics
· non-staining antibacterial rinses
· oral sedation in lollipops and freezer pops
· lollipops for oral thrush, containing antifungals and/or pain relievers
· mouth rinses for aphthous ulcers or chemotherapy or radiation-induced stomatitis (inflammation and soreness of the mouth)
· rinses to prevent oral bleeding during dental procedures for patients who take anticoagulants
· lozenges that help to prevent gagging
· and many more unique preparations and dosage forms

"Miracle Mouthwashes" and more

Compounding allows countless active ingredients to be incorporated into customized mouthwashes, gels, troches, etc. Compounded dental mouthwashes or rinses may offer numerous advantages over commercially available dosage forms. A customized preparation can be pleasantly flavored, reduce irritation caused by alcohol in commercial products, and eliminate dyes which may stain the oral mucosa (lining of the mouth).

Treatment for Dry Mouth, Mouth Tenderness and Infections

Loss of saliva (xerostomia) may be a side effect of some medications, is common in patients with Sjogren's disease, and is one of the most common complaints among patients who have received radiation therapy of the head and neck, and can lead to periodontal infection, dental caries, bone loss, and poor digestion of carbohydrates. Ask us about saliva stimulants.

When a person is receiving chemotherapy or radiation, stomatitis and mucositis (mouth tenderness and infections) can interfere with the ability to eat, yet these problems can be treated (and sometimes prevented) with customized medications.

Burning Mouth Syndrome

Burning mouth is reported most often by women, especially after menopause. Burning mouth syndrome involves a burning sensation on the tongue or other areas of the mouth, usually in the absence of clinical and laboratory findings. Mouthwashes and lozenges containing low dosages of medications such as clonazepam have been effective in treating burning mouth syndrome.

Suppressing the Gag Reflex

The gag reflex can cause patients considerable discomfort as well as interfere with dental procedures. A compounded electrolyte lozenge or lollipop can be used a few minutes before the start of a procedure to suppress the gag reflex. Lozenges can be prescribed for home use for patients who cannot properly perform oral hygiene procedures due to the gagging problem.

We work together with dentists, hygienists, and their patients to customize medications that enhance dental care.
