Customized Medications for your Pets |
It can be a true challenge to determine the most appropriate form of medicine to ensure compliance by humans, but doing so for animals is even more challenging. Most humans can communicate their preferences and tolerances; for example, people can report difficulty swallowing or unpalatable flavors. Animals, however, must communicate by way of behavioral reactions. Dosing veterinary patients requires the creativity of a compounding pharmacist, who can work together with the pet owner and veterinarian to provide needed medications in a dosage form and flavor that are accepted -and perhaps even appreciated - by your pet.

Medications for Behavior Disorders |
At best, a pet's behavior disorder is a minor inconvenience for the owner. At worst, behavior problems can lead to the surrender or euthanasia of a once-loved pet. Today, however, veterinary pharmacology offers new, safe, and effective therapies for the treatment of anxiety, aggression, and fear in dogs, cats, birds, and exotic pets. When used with behavior modification and changes in the pet's environment, these medications increase the likelihood of therapeutic success. Transdermal Gels: Easy to Administer |
As an alternative to oral administration, many medications can be absorbed through the skin when compounded as a transdermal gel. These gels can be massaged into an animal's ear (or another hairless area) and are particularly useful for animals that should not be stressed due to cardiovascular disease or high blood pressure, and for owners who have difficulty administering medications to their pets. Scientific investigations have provided much insight in recent years as to which medications are appropriate for transdermal administration, and we review and utilize these studies to provide the best form of medication for your "best friends". |
