| Health Tip: Antibiotic Resistance and Superbugs |
| Antibiotics have revolutionized the treatment of illnesses caused by bacterial infections. Antibiotics work against bacteria, not viruses like colds and flu, so while antibiotics have saved countless lives, misuse and overprescribing (often in response to patient demand) has given rise to "superbugs" which are resistant to many antibiotics. Resistance means that illnesses last longer and the risks of complications and death increase, so treatment is often more difficult and expensive. A well-publicized superbug is MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus). Other bacteria with resistant strains include Streptococcus ("strep"), tuberculosis, E. coli, salmonella, and gonorrhea. To help prevent antibiotic resistance, take all prescribed doses even if the infection seems to have resolved so that the last surviving bacteria don't mutate into a resistant strain. Don't save antibiotics for future use or share antibiotics with others. |
| Nutritional Support: Stimulate your Immune System |
|
In an environment where we are constantly exposed to viruses, bacteria and toxic pollutants, our professional pharmacists are always searching for new and better natural ways to stimulate the immune system. One of the best is beta glucan, a highly refined carbohydrate derived from the cell walls of yeast. This nutritional supplement stimulates antitumor and antimicrobial activity, and is a potent macrophage activator. Unlike other immune cells, macrophages are present in blood and organs including the liver, nervous tissue and skin. Stimulated into action by beta glucan, macrophage and natural killer cells are able to move from the peripheral blood stream to wherever they are needed most, actually "seeking out" and devouring disease-causing pathogens as well as cells damaged through oxidation, thereby hastening the healing of damaged tissue. Beta glucan has also been shown effective in protecting the skin against harmful environmental pollutants, chemicals and UV radiation, increasing the skin's ability to heal itself and reducing visible signs of aging like wrinkles. The optimal dose of beta glucan can even increase the number of immune cells in the bloodstream. The end result is a dramatic intensification of the body's ability to defend itself against a wide range of immune system challenges.
Ask us to recommend a quality Beta Glucan preparation. |
| Compounding Tip: Wound Healing |
|
Wound care is a growing specialty, and compounding pharmacists can play an important role. We can customize medications that will improve circulation to the wound and speed healing, while reducing pain, and fighting inflammation and infection. Diabetic patients often benefit from our expertise in healing foot ulcers. If you know someone with a slow-healing wound, our pharmacist will be happy to work with physician and patient to compound a medication specifically to meet that individual's unique needs.
We are Problem-Solving Specialists! If you have been unable to take your medication, experienced intolerable side effects, or the treatment has failed, ask us how customized medications may help. |
