TopOfPageBACK TO SCHOOL!
How to help your child with the transition.
Greetings!

The first six weeks of a new school year are the "Make It or Break It" weeks in terms of teacher relationships and perceptions, and we have prepared a webinar workshop to help parents help their children make the summer-to-school transition.

To register for the webinar workshop please click HERE.

I remember clearly the day I took my middle son William to kindergarten. He was so eager to go to school like his big sister and so proud to carry his new backpack filled with supplies. He hopped out of the car and we walked into his classroom filled with lots of interesting posters and a great library. His terrific teacher, Mrs. H., was there to greet us.

As I drove away, with tears in my eyes, I said to myself, "Please Mrs. H, take good care of my boy. I am TRUSTING YOU!

That was about 23 years ago and now William is a chemical engineer on a global research team for Kraft, Inc. But I remember it as if it were yesterday.
We want to make sure when we entrust our treasured children to a new teacher that we are ensuring that a good year will follow.  To find out how to make that happen, see the details of our upcoming webinar workshop below.

Back to School Webinar Workshop

Studies have shown that many conscious and subconscious beliefs about students are formed by faculty in the first two weeks and are confirmed in the following four weeks. We want our children to walk in the door of their new classroom with a sense of confidence, full of performance productivity and promise. We want them to look forward to the new school year.

And so we have planned a Back to School Webinar Workshop to give parents the tools they need to help their children with this big transition from summer to a new school year.

There will be two sessions offered:
  • Wednesday, September 12 at noon EDT
  • Thursday, September 13 at 7pm EDT.

Parents who are not currently clients may sign up for this special workshop HERE. There's a short form to fill out and then we will send instructions for accessing the webinar.

All you need is the internet and a phone!

My daughter is bright but defiant, and was diagnosed with PDD. What can I do?

"Joan," a new parent, told me that her 6-year-old daughter "Caitlin" had been diagnosed with PDD. Joan said that Caitlin was very bright -- she had an IQ of 140 and was reading at a third grade level when we talked initially. And yet, Caitlin was defiant about reading!  Joan had no idea how to handle the situation and came to me for advice.*

What is PDD?

PDD is an acronym for "Pervasive Development Disorder." According to the National Institutes of Health, where I served as a fellow, the diagnostic category of PDD refers to a group of disorders characterized by delays in the development of socialization and communication skills.

Symptoms may include problems with using and understanding language; difficulty relating to people, objects, and events; unusual play with toys and other objects; difficulty with changes in routine or familiar surroundings, and repetitive body movements or behavior patterns.

Was it PDD? Or was it an overly-strong visual brain?

Most IQ scores are measured at least in part by verbal intelligence. With a score of 140, I surmised that Caitlin had many strong verbal skills with advanced reading abilities.

The first question I asked Joan was whether there were highly visual thinkers in the family tree. With a high verbal IQ and good reading skills, there may be a problem with the integration of the visual and verbal thinking systems that would cause a practioner to see a pervasive developmental delay in many areas.

However, if there are highly visual thinkers in the family tree, then having measurements of visual attention, memory and processing can assist in determining causal factors, which can then be addressed through training.

Free screenings to identify visual thinking

If you feel your child has been mis-diagnosed, please call or email to make an appointment for a free screening with me. See below for how to schedule an appointment.

FREE SCREENING

Brain AMP no wordsThe purpose of the screening is for Dr. Florance to review your child's symptoms and family history with you in order to make an initial determination of whether the child would be a good candidate for her programs.

 .

Dr. Florance also works with many adults, as well as with families of children and teen-agers.

About Dr. Florance
Dr. Cheri L. Florance
Dr. Cheri Florance pioneered the scientific basis for Brain Engineering to address language and communication problems originating in a strong visual brain interfering with the development of the auditory-verbal brain, sometimes mimicking the symptoms of Autism Spectrum, ADD, PDD, Aspergers and other disorders. She named this visual brain syndrome the "Maverick Mind," and wrote the book
Maverick Mind based on her findings and her personal experience with her third child who was diagnosed as autistic, but who is now a college graduate and engineer, and completely symptom-free.

Dr. Florance now has an international practice, working with Mavericks all over North America and Europe, as well as Greece, Cyprus, Indonesia, Australia, South Africa, and South Korea.
