Written Tests: Helping Your Child Excel

He's failing written tests, even though he knows the material.

Here's what we did to solve the problem.

A parent wrote to me recently, asking: "What tests can we get done to accurately identify how our son learns best and expresses what he learns? He's blowing written tests, even though he knows the information."

Think about these two investigative strategies:

Does my child know the material? Is it in his knowledge base? OR ...
Is my child having trouble with language processing?

I am currently working with a bilingual child from a trilingual family. I conducted a bilingual teacher's conference where the teachers and special education specialists participated.

They believed that this 11-year-old child was operating at a 2nd or 3rd grade level academically. But they were teaching him 5th grade material and he was failing. They were giving him tests at school where he would get many answers wrong and then withdraw or misbehave, compounding the problem.

Working with the parents and teachers, we modified how the language was written and made the language processing easier but kept the ideas at the 5th grade level. He then got all of the answers right.

Thinking and language are two different functions

It is very important to remember that thinking and language are two different functions. The goal is to maximize thinking and modify language, so that the child feels he or she has enough mastery over the language to express ideas, thoughts, and knowledge.
