The Maverick Mind is a Universal Phenomenon
Greetings!
Your child may seem to be in a world of his own, like my son, Whitney, did at times. Your child may not engage with others easily and may appear isolated and different. But what our children and our families have in common is the highly visual brain. That's what unites us globally in a community of hope and future happiness.
The Maverick Mind syndrome is a universal phenomenon. I have worked with people all over the world who have a strong visual brain over-riding the auditory/verbal brain, causing language, communication, and social interaction problems. Strikingly apparent is how similar the problems and solutions for visual thinkers can be worldwide. As a frequent lecturer at universities and conferences and as a consultant to government agencies and heads of state, I felt especially proud recently when I received a glowing recommendation working in both Greece and Cyprus to teach international best practice standards. I'd like to share with you some of the comments written by international consultant and former Inspector of Special Education for the Ministry of Education in Cyprus, Pantelis Makris:"After working with Dr. Florance in Greece, I returned to Cyprus and recommended her to our Ministry of Education and Culture and to their U.S. Embassy in Nicosia. After reviewing her impressive credentials and work history, we extended an offer for her to spend two weeks here, in both the Greek and Turkish communities, evaluating children and training educators, government officials and parents.
Dr. Florance is a very unique individual. She has a presence that energizes an audience. I sat by her side on panels in Greece and I collaborated with her in Cyprus as a translator when needed. I assisted in arranging a meeting with Dr. Florance and our First Lady, Elsie Christofia.
Dr. Florance uses technology fluidly to move from idea to idea, from culture to culture, from language to language. Because she is an international expert in the visual brain, many of her ideas can be communicated without verbal communication. So she is able to animate and unite an audience through their picture-thinking easily. As she teaches visual attention, visual memory, visual association and big picture conceptualization, all of the participants are eagerly engaged regardless of the culture or native tongue.
I have watched her work with a variety of audiences in the teaching auditorium, over dinner meetings and in brainstorming sessions with our highest government leaders. She is a master at generating great ideas and developing plans for solutions to what would seem the impossible.
I don't say 'impossible' lightly because after Dr. Florance was already world renowned, she was faced with an impossible situation herself, when her own highly visual son, Whitney, was diagnosed with severe autism, deafness, mutism, and an I.Q. of 49. He was labeled as unteachable and placed in a county program for the severely multiple-handicapped. He did not speak until he was 7 and did not relate to his family. He bit, he spit, he urinated on people. He was not part of our world. Dr. Florance was stymied by the most severe brain problem she had ever seen.
But she put her creative mind to work and developed a plan, one that led to success. By the time her son was in the 9th grade he lettered in football and wrestling, and by 10th grade he started attending college classes. He directed plays. He won speech contests. He became a full functioning, symptom-free, brilliant thinker. Today he works as a chemical engineer.
As we have seen in our joint seminars, her story of using brain science to help her own child unites all people. I highly recommend Dr. Florance, and would be delighted to see her continue to unite countries and cultures around the world."
Yours faithfully, Pantelis Makris CEO of SE.S (Special Educational Solutions - Special Educational Systems) President of ICTEACH Head of Special Needs Dept of the Cyprus Neuroscience and Technology Institute UNDP Expert European Commission Project Evaluator www.icteach.org

Parent Corner
"He completed the problems in 30 minutes with a score of 90%. He said he felt free from stress working this way." (Parent of a 12-year old Maverick).
"The biggest thing that has jumped out for me is his ability to remember the beginning, middle and end of both visual and verbal tasks. This, he also carries over into his school work." (Grateful parent).
"On a great note...he got 100% on his spelling test today! Mrs. [teacher] gave him a certificate. He also did a math facts sheet ALL by himself this afternoon." (Excited parent).

Free Screening
The visual brain is very powerful and because of the majesty of visual
thinking, children can have problems with attention, memory, cooperation,
motivation and communication. The visual brain can become the enemy of
the verbal brain and cause it to malfunction.

Brain Grins and Groans
**************
 | Brain Friendly Grin:
"Tonight at the table, when my daughter asked him how [his friend's] party went, he answered in paragraph speaking! Normally, he would have said one word and then we would have to ask what else. He had flow!"
**************
Brain Friendly Groan: A doctor and his wife told me that their newly-diagnosed Maverick daughter had once hidden her homework by stuffing it in the couch. She had also hidden some in the back of her closet. This 4th grader was in trouble with her teacher for missing homework. Upon finding it, her parents told her this was unacceptable. 'On our family vacation, the rest of us are going skiing but you will only be able to join when you get your homework caught up.' So they sat her in the hotel room with her homework, and a plan to complete it, while the rest of them went skiing. When the family returned to her at the hotel, no homework was done. The Doctor-Dad thought, 'Hmmm, I know she really wanted to ski with us -- I guess it's not a motivation problem."
