Brain Grins and Groans

**************
Brain Friendly Grin
Grin
"I know we have a big file on Jay's disability but no one here would even know he ever had a symptom... so I see no need to tell the teachers or make accommodations until a need arises," said The High School Principal to the parents of a Symptom-Free Maverick entering the 9th grade.

After 8 years of special education, Jay not only did well in high school, he is now in a Graduate program in Architecture.

Groan
"There are no stutterers in the state of Georgia," said a College Disability Officer.

There are actually an estimated 97,000 stutterers in the state of Georgia.

Parent Corner

"I felt weight coming off my shoulders knowing that I am not alone."  (Parent of a newly discovered Maverick).

"[My son's] brain was going everywhere but Dr. Florance has helped him compartmentalize, separate and organize items.   After she explains it all, it makes perfect sense.  I just couldn't have come up with that on my own.  The parent training sessions have been fantastic.  Having that like-minded group and that connection is fabulous." (Parent of a Maverick)

"I know how devastating it can be when a child is misdiagnosed with autism, a permanant disabilty, when a communication disorder is truly the problem. The child won't get the appropriate help they need and deserve and that is tragic.". (Parent of a Maverick)

The visual brain is very powerful and because of the majesty of visual thinking, children can have problems with attention, memory, cooperation, motivation and communication.  The visual brain can become the enemy of the verbal brain and cause it to malfunction.

Case Study:  Caleb

Caleb was diagnosed with autism as a very young child and was in a special education classroom for many years. In the fall of his 6th grade year, his parents pulled him out of school because he was in such distress. They considered home schooling because his teachers felt Caleb would benefit most from reading pre-school picture books in a classroom by himself with one-on-one instructions.

And then his family came to me.

When I began working with him, Caleb was withdrawn and rarely spoke. When he did speak, he quoted lines from his favorite movies or made odd noises. I was able to identify Caleb as a Maverick Mind - his strong visual brain was interfering with the side of his brain that processes language, leading to symptoms that can result in a misdiagnosis of autism.

If your child has been diagnosed with
autism or pervasive developmental delay (PDD),
then it is very important that you find out more about
the best practice standards for applying this label to your child.

The program I designed for Caleb was based on the
5 Steps of Brain Engineering

1.    Attention and Memory: the Brain Pillars.
In this step, we tap into the powerful visual attention and memory systems to access auditory attention and memory, to begin forming a solid foundation for learning.

2.    Self Control: Anchoring the Central Executive.
In this step, the focus is on building self-control over mood, behavior and communication, which are all controlled by the brain's central executive, which is driven by the sequencer and the associator. The sequencer drives language, allowing words to flow in a specific order to create a sentence, sentences to create paragraphs, and paragraphs to build sequentially to convey a larger message. The very powerful associator can think in many patterns all at once.

3.    Listening and Reading: Developing Input Processors.
By improving attention and memory and the ability to channel-switch between verbal and visual processing (Steps 1 and 2) Mavericks are able to develop an active system of segmenting, associating, and sequencing their listening and reading.

4.    Speaking and Writing: Developing Output Processors.
We learn through our receptive language (listening, reading) but we are graded by our expressive language (writing, speaking). Mavericks are trained to use the strength of their receptive language to support speaking and writing.

5.    Self-Esteem: Home, School and Work.
Mavericks are highly intuitive, big-picture thinkers - associators -- working from the concept to the details. These traits can cause problems initially, but when harnessed properly, they allow the Maverick to excel. As they begin to excel, they build self-esteem, leading to the ultimate goal: successful interaction at home, school and work.

---------------------------------

Early in Step 4 of the Brain Engineering process, Caleb's teacher felt he would respond well to preschool and early primary books. Several months later, he improved so much that he was mainstreamed for reading, science, spelling and social studies.

In this picture, Caleb is learning to apply his Brain Engineering training so he can think in paragraphs and produce fluent, forward-moving speech.

Caleb 1

Caleb was soon moved out of his autism class and mainstreamed into his grade level. And, after years of agonizing about how best to help their child, Caleb's parents experienced the reward of watching their child become a happy, competent, verbal 6th grader, able to take notes and write his exams and handle reading materials appropriate to his grade level.

Caleb 2

Caleb benefited from working with the other students as well as his teachers, who were very proud of him and his on-going improvement in language skills. His school administration and teachers worked with his parents and Brain Engineering Labs to build a strong support network to advocate for his success.
