Case Study:  Teachers and Support Networks

Greetings!

The highly visual child, the Maverick, doesn't exist in a vacuum.  The classroom of peers and teachers can either be brain friendly or be the visual brain's enemy. The Maverick does not improve by "the try-harder" method. As the Maverick learns to use the code of words as well as the code of pictures, life can change in very critical ways.

Maverick children need an expanded support network - teacher, doctor, therapist, and family members - to understand what it means to have a highly visual brain. Significant others in this support network can then become advocates for the Maverick child by understanding the cause of the problem as well as the solutions.

Seeing the visual thinker in a new light can change how everyone relates to them. This realization is a major first step in moving toward improvement.

Sarando, an Adaptive Physical Education teacher from New York City, said he was very much influenced by my book "Maverick Mind," where he learned of my experience with my own child, Whitney. Whitney was diagnosed at a very early age with severe autism, mental retardation, and sensory integration problems. In that book, I describe how, despite having 15 years of work and research in the brain science of language and communication disorders at the time Whitney was born, I was stymied as a professional, and devastated as a parent.

Fortunately, as the book explains, I was able to identify Whitney's problem as the syndrome I now call the Maverick Mind. Though his symptoms suggested autism, in reality his highly visual brain was interfering with his ability to process language. I was able to devise a series of training exercises which helped to develop the verbal side of his brain, and eventually Whitney became symptom-free. Today, he is a college graduate, working as a chemical engineer.

Whitney's progress was a group effort. I was able to recruit a support network to assist in training him as he gradually acquired language and learned self-control. Whitney's siblings, especially, were an important part of that network. But his teachers also became prime advocates for his on-going success.

The visual brain is very powerful and because of the majesty of visual thinking, children can have problems with attention, memory, cooperation, motivation and communication.  The visual brain can become the enemy of the verbal brain and cause it to malfunction.

Find out if this is the situation you are facing by scheduling an appointment with my assistant.  Just click http://brain-engineering-labs.genbook.com. Choose "Free Telephone Screening" and select a day and time that's open and we will call you.  It's as easy as that.

Parent Corner

Parent of a Maverick Child stated:
"I noticed that [my 2 year old son] doesn't seem to know how to play with toys. I have had to show and teach him, until he gets the hang of it. He then plays with the same things over and over and over every day. He seems to get some sort of positive reinforcement from the toys he is comfortable with and doesn't want to try new things such as cars and "zooming" them around the floor. I never thought I would have to teach a kid how to play."

DR. FLORANCE'S RESPONSE:
"A lot of [your son's] play may be in pictures inside his head so you don't actually see it.  What we are teaching him is how to get the ideas out.
Picasso once said that the only reason he drew pictures was to get out some of his ideas."
