Case Study: Dr. T.C.

In the words of Dr. T.C.:
After
my second year of residency, I began preparing for the boards, studying
10 to 12 hours a day for 30 days. When I found out I had failed the
test, I went to my advisor. He couldn't understand what had gone wrong.
Had I mis-numbered the answers? Did I not get enough sleep? Was I not
feeling well? The answer to all was "no."
My
advisor referred me to a facility for university students to be tested
for possible learning disabilities. A week later, the gentleman who
gave me the results told me I had scored high on the tests, and noted
that I was a medical student. He was polite, but he seemed to imply
that I was wasting his time, that perhaps I hadn't prepared well enough
for the boards, and that was why I failed.
So
every day, I worked with my advisor for two hours, and then went home
and locked myself in my room and studied for 10 to 12 more hours. The
day before the test, I went over everything with my advisor. He said,
"You're ready for this. You'll do well." And I felt confident-I felt I
knew the material even better this time around. So I took the test.
The
next day, I started my third-year clinical rotations. Things were going
well. I was on the wards, and when I got my two-week evaluations, they
all were excellent. And then I went home a week later and there was a
message on my answering machine from my advisor, asking me to call. He
informed me that I had failed the test again. "I'm sorry," he said,
"but you can't go to the hospital."
I
was devastated. I was traumatized. I had been in the hospital doing
what I felt I was supposed to do. And yet here I was-I couldn't go back
to the hospital.
Dr. T.C. continues:
My
advisor asked me to come in and meet Dr. Florance. I learned what a
Maverick was-someone with a highly visual brain, and a verbal brain not
working as well.
And
suddenly, it was like a cloud parted and the sun was shining, and
finally there was someone who truly understood what I had been thinking
for all these years, but didn't know how to put into words. I began
working with Dr. Florance.
The
moment I knew that things were moving along was when I went to study
and the clock showed that only 15 minutes had gone by. And I thought,
'this can't be right!' because it usually took me four hours to cover
what I had covered in only 15 minutes. It wasn't that I was reading
faster, but I was absorbing it better. I knew the material better than
before, and was able to explain it to myself.
This
time I passed the boards, and became a second-year resident, doing
physical medicine and rehabilitation. If I hadn't met Dr. Florance, I
know I wouldn't be here at this time.
