Case Study: Merea
Greetings!
Merea was diagnosed with autism at age two. She was quiet, almost non-verbal, and did not play with other children. To communicate, she led her parents by the hand to show them what she wanted or needed. She seldom smiled or laughed.

Merea also had severe, unpredictable tantrums and trouble maintaining a regular sleep pattern, some nights sleeping only a few hours. Her parents avoided family get-togethers. Only one parent could go to her brother's sporting events because the other stayed home with Merea. No one could babysit because her behavior was so unpredictable.

Despite being told by developmental psychologists and therapists that her daughter was autistic, Merea's mother, Marleen, noticed that Merea was able to use her visual thinking very easily. She could operate the VCR, play computer games, and put together intricate puzzles with ease. Marleen knew there was more to her symptoms than autism.
