OPPONENTS LINE UP AGAINST HBAA - BACKED LEGISLATION
|
Representative Greg Wren (R-Montgomery) introduced the
HBAA's Energy and Building Code bill today. In addition to establishing a minimum building and energy
code for Alabama, HB 264 includes language that prohibits the mandating of
residential fire sprinkler systems in new single-family homes.
Thanks to the efforts of many of you who contacted your
legislators over the past week and asked them to support this important
legislation, we already have 80 co-sponsors for the bill. However, the
fight is only beginning, and we still need your help.
As expected, the fire service has lined up to oppose this
bill. As we speak, fire officials
are making calls to these same legislators asking them to oppose the bill in
order to mandate the installation of fire sprinklers. We must put the same
amount of pressure on legislators to ensure that they support the bill.
This is "THE bell-cow issue" for our membership. In order to protect the consumer's
right to decide for themselves whether or not to install a sprinkler system in
their home, HBAA MEMBERS MUST CONTACT THEIR LEGISLATORS TODAY!
Our first priority is contacting the members of the House
Commerce Committee, who will consider HB 264 next Wednesday, January 20. All
but two committee members (Earl Hilliard and Pebblin Warren) have signed on as
co-sponsors. If you live in a district of one of these committee members, we
need you to call the committee member in your area NOW. Thank them for
co-sponsoring this bill and ask that they continue to support the consumer's
right to choose to install sprinklers in their own home.
We also need members to contact other House and Senate
members to encourage them to support this legislation. To find the House and
Senate members in your area, visit http://www.legislature.state.al.us/.
You can also call the House switchboard at (334) 242-7600 and the Senate
switchboard at (334) 242-7800 and ask to be connected to your legislator.
We need every member pulling together to help us win this
fight. Please do your part to keep fires sprinklers an option, not a
requirement, and call your legislators TODAY!
