 Light in the City
Jesus' powerful metaphor, "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden" (Matthew 5:14) inspired the name of a new urban ministry begun recently at Christ Church in Austin, Texas.
Lumen - which means "light" in Latin and is a measure of the brightness of a light bulb - is a nonprofit organization dedicated to scattering the darkness of poverty by being the light of Christ among the least and the lowly in Austin.

Guest Chaplain Prays for the US House
On May 3, 2010, the Rev. Dan Claire, rector of theAM congregation Church of the Resurrection in Washington, DC, served as Guest Chaplain for the United States House of Representatives, opening the chamber's session with prayer:
Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord. (Ps. 33:12)
Almighty God, we praise you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of life; but above all, for your immeasurable love in redemption, by your Light that has come into the world.
We await that promised day when there will be no more death or misery, injustice or oppression. Until then, guide our nation in paths of righteousness for your name's sake, and forgive our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
Direct and prosper the work of this body, that they may ordain for our governance only those things as will please you and further the welfare of all people.
Bestow upon every person here, in both their public and private lives, your amazing grace, that they might abound in every good work.
To you be all praise and honor, glory and power, now and forever. AMEN.

Women Partner with Mission to Haiti The words "women's retreat" may invoke thoughts of inspirational speakers, talking to friends, playing games, and laughing hysterically late into the night. Filling plastic bags with toiletries, however, is not the norm.
When Christ Church Anglican in Overland Park, Kansas, decided to include something missional to the agenda of their bi-annual Women's Encounter, they chose to partner with their mission team traveling to Savanette, Haiti. Sure the ladies experienced traditional retreat activities, but many took part in an outreach project during free time to serve Haitians.

What causes a strapping college football player with a bright future to travel two hours off campus every day just to spend an hour with someone?
"I was love sick," explains Bill Buckley, South Mississippi Region Director for Fellowship of Christian Athletes, "and I would have done anything to be with my wife, even if it was for an hour a day."
