Anglican Mission Leaders Travel to Jerusalem for the Global Anglican Future Conference

Over 1,000 senior leaders from seventeen provinces in the Anglican Communion have registered for the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) in Jerusalem this month. The leaders represent 35 million church-going Anglicans worldwide.

Bishop Chuck Murphy, as well as a group of 38 Anglican Mission bishops, senior clergy, and lay leaders will be attending the conference June 22-29, 2008. Also participating in the event is Archbishop Kolini, who serves on the GAFCON leadership team, as well as a number of leaders from the Province of the Anglican Church of Rwanda.

Anglican GAFCON Leadership

Part of the Anglican Mission leadership team schduled to meet in Jerusalem in June.

Preparing Leaders for the Future

Preparing leaders for the future is one of the Anglican Mission's top priorities. Committed to strengthening the effectiveness of this core value, the Council of Bishops, Board of Directors and Network Leaders have endorsed a new staff position with funding approved by the Board.

H MillerThe Rev. H. G. Miller, currently rector of All Saints Anglican Church, Morehead City, NC, has accepted a call to serve as Director of Leadership Development beginning in July. Reporting to the President and CEO, H will be responsible for identifying and recruiting ordained and lay leaders, the Fellows Program, credentialing, deployment and parish based education.

"I am greatly honored to be able to serve the Mission in this vital area of leadership development," H said. "As the Mission continues to grow at a rapid pace, the need for well-equipped church planters, gifted clergy and spiritually mature laity is of utmost importance."

H comes to the Anglican Mission with broad experience in parish ministry. As rector of All Saints, he transitioned to a blended worship in the primary Sunday service and introduced new discipleship programs. Under his leadership, the church built an 11,000 square foot church campus which was dedicated by Bishop Murphy in April. H has also served as Leader of the Eastern North Carolina Network since 2006.

"I am delighted that H will be joining our Mission Center team," said Canon Ellis Brust. "He brings a proven track record as well as a passion for the full scope of developing leaders for mission and ministry."

Shelly Miller, H's wife, serves as Assistant to the Director of Communications for the Anglican Mission. The Millers have two children, Murielle and Harrison, and the family will move to Pawleys Island this summer.

A HughesThe Rev. Allen Hughes has been appointed a Canon Missioner by Bishop Murphy with the Council of Bishops' endorsement, and will be officially installed during a service later this summer at St. Peter's Church, Mt. Pleasant. Canon Hughes will join Canons Doc Loomis and Mike Murphy in helping the mission identify and break in to new territory throughout North America.

Hughes will focus on recruiting new leaders as part of H Miller's new Leadership Development Team.
Making a Good First Impression
in Raleigh, NC

In a generous gesture of hospitality and creative evangelism, Church of the Apostles in Raleigh, NC, hosted a neighborhood block party on May 31, 2008 to welcome the surrounding community to their new church home. The facility was consecrated a week earlier by founding Pastor, Bishop Terrell Glenn. The event attracted more than 500 people, helping to establish relationships with many in the area.

The new church location, formerly the Coastal Federal Credit Union in midtown Raleigh, gave ample platform for a myriad of activities: face painting, carnival games, fun play inflatables for children, a basketball tournament for middle and high school kids, live music-and free hot dogs and Chick-fil-A samples.

"We gave 250 people tours through the renovated building and saw at least 15-20 new faces in church the next day," reports Patrick Dominguez, Rector.

The event was successfully promoted through fliers placed in a local newspaper distributed to two primary zip codes, a "Money Mailer" ad, as well as print and email invitations.

A student art show was on display in the church lobby and an on-site blood drive collected 36 units of blood for the Red Cross in just four hours. "We really wanted to give something back to the community, and the blood drive was a great way for us to do that," said Celeste Brogdon, Event Coordinator.

Church of the Apostles' innovative party built connections between the church members and neighboring families and energized parishioners as they worked side by side on the project.

"It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm of our members as they used their talents toward a common vision," exclaimed Rector Dominguez.

Anglican Mission Center Gets
A New Home

With a growing staff and an immediate need for additional office space the Anglican Mission Center will move into a new home this summer!

The Board of Directors unanimously approved purchase of a free-standing building in the Mingo Development, Pawleys Island. Located near the corner of Highway 17 and Willbrook Boulevard, the new Mission Center provides room to grow as well as meeting and conference areas.

Given the Anglican Mission's vision of reaching the 130 million unchurched by planting congregations, this move into the "marketplace" represents a powerful symbol.

Since its formation, the Anglican Mission has been located at All Saints Church, Pawleys Island, most recently in the original Parish Hall. "We will be forever grateful for the time we have had at All Saints and to the parish for welcoming us as a part of their campus for these last several years," noted Bishop Murphy, expressing his appreciation to the All Saints leadership.

The Mission Center staff will transition into their new offices mid-July.
Winter Conference 2009:
Save the NEW Date!

Mark your calendars with these important new dates and place!

We are delighted to announce that next year's Winter Conference 2009 will now be held at the Sheraton Greensboro Hotel and Joseph S. Koury Convention Center in Greensboro, NC.

Please take note of the date change to:
Wednesday, Jan. 28 - Saturday, Jan. 31,
2009.

The Denver Sheraton Hotel where Winter Conference was planned for February 2009 will be undergoing unexpected renovations during our scheduled time there. Given the extent of the construction project-$70 million in guest rooms and public areas-we had to switch the Anglican Mission's key annual event away from the Denver venue. Sheraton Greensboro

The 1,000-room Greensboro hotel is a beautiful facility with expansive meeting space. Most importantly, the family-owned hotel management demonstrates a passionate commitment to customer service to facilitate our event's growing needs.

First-ever Anglican Mission School of Church Planting

The Anglican Initiative for Mission (AIM) held its first Anglican School of Church Planting May 24 - June 1, 2008 on the campus of Christ Church Plano in Texas.

The inaugural school drew 11 church planters from five states and Canada. The intense eight-day training program is an integral part of AIM's process to inspire and call, train and equip, and send and support Anglican Mission leadership to plant and build reproducing churches to the glory of God. Sessions were designed to provide instruction, models and coaching in the six characteristics of a healthy Anglican church: Worship, Discipleship, External Focus/Evangelism, Communications, Administration, and Pastoral Care.

Never Silent

Never Silent book

Never Silent, written by the Anglican Mission's own Bishop Thaddeus Barnum, skillfully connects the dots surrounding the early history and build up of events that culminated in the creation of the Anglican Mission in the Americas.

Viewed largely through the lens of Bishops Thad Barnum and John Rucyahana, book authors this book describes the bold way in which the leadership in the church of Rwanda and S.E. Asia addressed a crisis of faith and leadership in the USA, and pioneered what we experience today in Anglican Mission churches across North America and Canada.

Commenting on the book, Bishop Chuck Murphy said: "Never Silent offers us more than new insight into the hearts and motives of the pioneering Global South leaders who created what is now the Anglican Mission (AMiA). It moves the heart, and stirs the resolve, to consider the incredible opportunity for mission in North America that has been made possible by the bold and prophetic leadership offered by the Anglican Church of Rwanda."

Bishop Barnum's book is particularly timely as the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) takes place in Jerusalem this month.
