From the President
CameronHarris
Cameron Harris, RPSGT

It has been only a month since I have assumed responsibility as president of CAAHEP, but the well-organized management of the Presidency by my predecessors has allowed a smooth transition. I would like to recognize Hugh Bonner for his excellent service and leadership to CAAHEP, and add personal thanks for his mentorship.

We have a new slate of officers joining me in leadership of CAAHEP. Kerry Weinberg will serve as Vice-President and Susan Fuchs is Secretary. Calvin Harris continues as Treasurer. Other key Board leadership positions are filled by Bernie Cohen as chair of the Performance Oversight Committee and Claire Chandler as chair of the Planning and Development Committee. We are also joined by new Board members Thomas Skalko, Carolyn O'Daniel, Jasmine Simonian, and public member, Pauletta Brown Bracy.

In my first column, I have the good fortune to share that CAAHEP continues to grow! An open hearing was held at the summer workshop for the initial Standards of our newest profession, Advanced Cardiovascular Sonography, and the Standards will be on the agenda for final approval at the September 21st Board meeting.  As other allied health professions continue to evolve, they have shown interest in CAAHEP accreditation. Most recently, CAAHEP has received inquiries about participation from three new professions.

At our annual meeting last April, the Commission approved Bylaws changes that included a provision to conduct meetings via webinar.  A web-based meeting will allow us to be more responsive to our CoAs and to potential new professions by having the Commission act upon applications for new professions and approval of new sponsors and CoAs in a timely manner, rather than only once a year at the annual meeting. This technology may also prove useful for expediting open hearings for Standards. We will be conducting a Commission meeting using this technology in the fall, and will be reporting back on actions taken by the Commission.

Speaking of the CAAHEP Annual Meeting, I encourage you to file you taxes early and attend our 2013 meeting April 14 and 15 in Charleston, South Carolina. The meeting will be held at the Francis Marion Hotel, one of the oldest and grandest hotels located in the heart of Charleston. The CAAHEP Planning and Development Committee is reviewing recent Commissioner surveys about the Annual Meeting, and will be taking the survey results into consideration as they work with a task force of volunteers to develop an agenda that continues to highlight important issues in accreditation as well as spotlighting the professions within CAAHEP.  Please plan to join us for the annual meeting of the Commission.

Change in DoE Regs is Good News For Distance Programs

In a recent Inside Higher Ed article, changes in the Department of Education regulations as they relate to obtaining permission to operate in every state in which at least one student is enrolled were announced. A letter sent to colleges by the US Department of Education backed off on their plans to enforce a requirement  that colleges need to be authorized to operate in a state even if they have only one resident of that state enrolled in a distance education program.  The complete Inside Higher Ed article includes a link to the letter from US Department of Education.

But the issue has not gone away as individual states continue to pursue regulations or statutory language that will require such authorization.

CAAHEP Accreditation is a Link to Potential Students

Being a CAAHEP accredited program not only indicates that a program has met the Standards set forth by the profession, it also puts the program's name out in front of potential students...and a LOT of potential students, at that. By being CAAHEP accredited, programs are automatically listed on the CAAHEP website, and the listing includes the program's name, concentration, contact information, and link to the program's website. So far in 2012, nearly 430,000 visitors from around the world have viewed the CAAHEP website, and the "Find an Accredited Program" page is the number one area visited on the site, with over 383,000 visits so far this year. Site visitors also take the opportunity to learn more about the profession and certification through the For Student section of the site, with more than 139,000 individuals viewing these descriptive pages.

If you have a CAAHEP accredited program, please be sure the program's information is up to date by viewing the listing under the Find an Accredited Program page. Any changes to the program information should be reported to CAAHEP staff.
