From the President
| Hugh Bonner, PhD, FASAHP |
As we know well, these are turbulently changing times for higher education generally and specialized accreditation specifically. The state and federal legislatures, institutional accreditors, US Department of Education and CHEA each are weighing in with recommenda-tions, often conflicting and ambiguous in nature, that impact CAAHEP and each Committee on Accreditation. The renowned management consultant Peter Drucker pointed out that to survive in a world of change, we must embrace ambiguity, fill gaps of understanding with creativity, and rethink the entire organization. In a changing world, we cannot continue doing what we have always done, or we will become the 21st century dinosaur unable to adapt. To survive, we need to continually recruit new leaders from among the Commissioners to serve on the CAAHEP Board. Pulitzer Prize winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, noted in her biography of Abraham Lincoln, A Team of Rivals, that in the turbulent times of the Civil War, Lincoln appointed to his cabinet individuals who were the best and the brightest, who understood their own strengths, and did not fear expressing their views. Some of these appointees ran against Lincoln and wished to defeat him in the future, yet they came together to save the country. We, too, need the best and the brightest to lead CAAHEP, especially as we navigate our way through an era of conflicting demands. As was noted in our Annual Meeting theme, we most definitely are "Flying Through Challenging Skies." READ MORE...
