RENT- a special fundraising event in Theatre Bristol's ARTspace
Winner of nearly every major industry award, including the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 1996 Tony Award for Best Musical, RENT continues to be a cornerstone of modern American musical theatre. RENT first opened at the off-Broadway, New York Theatre Workshop where it garnered a huge buzz. The New York Times theater critic Ben Brantley called it an "exhilarating, landmark rock opera" with a "glittering, inventive score" that "shimmers with hope for the future of the American musical." Jonathan Larson's Pulitzer-prize winning Broadway musical based loosely on Puccini's opera La Bohème. It follows a year in the lives of seven friends living the disappearing Bohemian lifestyle in New York's East Village. AIDS and both its physical and emotional complications pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom, and Angel; Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble; Benjamin has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends; and Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general, always behind the camera recording the events but never playing a part. All Tickets - $15

From Wood to Singing Guitar
a documentary by Appalshop showcasing master musician and luthier Wayne Henderson discussion with Wayne Henderson and film producer Shawn Lind.
The Birthplace of Country Music Alliance and Appalshop will host a screening of the Appalshop documentary From Wood to Singing Guitar in the J. Henry Kegley meeting room at the Bristol Public Library on Saturday, December 5th at 2 PM. Admission is free. From Wood to Singing Guitar showcases Wayne C. Henderson, master musician and luthier from Rugby, Virginia. Following the presentation, both Henderson and the film's producer, Shawn Lind, will participate with the audience in a discussion. "We are very pleased to work with Appalshop to show this documentary in the Tri-Cities," commented Bill Hartley, Executive Director of the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance. From Wood to Singing Guitar allows viewers the opportunity to watch a master practice his craft, hear a musician play the songs of his home, and visit with friends. Following the film and discussion, Wayne Henderson will be performing at the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia later that evening. "We encourage the community to come out to learn more about Wayne Henderson and our region's musical and cultural heritage in the afternoon, and then go see him perform live later that evening," added Hartley. In 1995, Wayne Henderson was awarded the National Endowment for the Art's National Heritage Fellowship for his work as a luthier and musician. Producing over 400 guitars for the likes of Doc Watson and Eric Clapton, the quality of Wayne's instruments have created a famous waiting list of ten years. Equally as famous is Wayne's reputation for being generous, friendly, and very approachable as a musician and an instrument maker. Many travelers along The Crooked Road learn this first hand as visitors to Wayne's shop and music festival every year. Following the screening of the documentary, the film's producer, Shawn Lind, and Wayne Henderson will participate in an audience discussion. Shawn Lind, a graduate of Ohio University, started working with Appalshop during the summer of 2005. After a year of shooting and editing, From Wood to Singing Guitarhad its world premier at Appalshop's annual Seedtime on the Cumberland Festival. 10th Annual Journey's End
On Tuesday, December 15 (inclement weather date is Thursday, December 17) at 6:30 PM, Journey's End will again take place in Historic Downtown Bristol. Journey's End is our local interpretation of the latino tradition of Las Posadas (The Inns). Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem is recreated as they go from inn to inn seeking lodging. The final inn welcomes them in and celebrates their arrival. Our inns are the restaurants on State Street and our innkeepers are various choirs and choral groups. We will begin at the Downtown Center (hot chocolate will be provided) and process by candlelight with Mary and Joseph down State Street. Singing the traditional song and various carols accompanied by instrumentalists, we will arrive at the Trainstation where we will have gingerbread and hot cider. This year Mary will be Rachel Grunstra and Joseph will be Luke Dotson. Along the way, choirs from Redeemer Lutheran Church will be at Shanghai, Emmanuel Episcopal Church at the State Line Bar & Grill, First Presbyterian Church at Manna Bagel Café, Theatre Bristol at K P Duty, First Christian and Woodlawn Baptist Churchs at Java J's, and St. Anne's School at the Trainstation. Southeast Culinary & Hospitality College will provide gingerbread and Java J's will provide hot cider at the Trainstation, and the Bristol TN Department of Community Relations will provide hot chocolate at the Downtown Center. The Believe in Bristol event lasts a little more than an hour. Several of the restaurants will be taking dinner reservations and some of the downtown shops will be open. Come and celebrate Christmas in the heart of our community.

THROUGH COLLECTIVE SONGWRITING, HOWLING HARMONIES, & MULTI-INSTRUMENTAL TALENT, THEIR SHOW CAN TAKE YOU FROM A BACK PORCH HOE-DOWN TO A FULL ON ROCK SHOW AT THE CHANGE OF AN INSTRUMENT. "We've shared some amazing times with Bristol over the years and it's always been our home away from home. We're proud to be a part of this community and we're happy to start this year off on the right foot; stomping it in Bristol!" The New Familiars HAVING PLAYED HUNDREDS OF SHOWS FROM THE SUNNY BEACHES OF FL TO THE BUSTLING CITIES OF MA AND FROM THE SMOKIES TO THE ROCKIES, THESE GENTLEMEN HAVE SEEN SOME MILES AND HAVE SOME STORIES. ON AN ALMOST CONSTANT STATE OF TOUR, THEY HAVE MANAGED TO RELEASE A FEW EPS, A VINYL SINGLE, AND ARE CURRENTLY ON TOUR WITH THEIR NEW LIVE ALBUM; ALL THE WHILE CONTINUING WORK ON A FULL LENGTH ALBUM "THE NEW FAMILIARS are one of the hardest working bands touring today, playing many of the largest festivals on the east coast. I booked these guys for their first show in Bristol, VA/TN nearly four years ago and I can't tell you how happy I am to be presenting them again for this New Year's Eve Celebration @ The Historic Downtown Bristol Train Station! They are truly one of my favorite live acts, not to mention my good friends. This is not a black tie event! The fitting theme for this party is Bands, Barbeque, Boots & Blue Jeans". - Eric Blevins, Broken Strings Productions To learn more about the band, visit their website: http://www.myspace.com/thenewfamiliars Also slated to perform will be NYC Anti Folk Legend, PALEFACE. More than a decade since his last major label release, PALEFACE, a founding member of NYC's Anti-folk movement, is back with "The Show is on the Road" (Ramseur Records). The album is an intimate, 11-song diary that transcends genres with its ingenuous lyrics and deceptively unassuming style - just PALEFACE on guitar, harmonica & banjo, girlfriend Monica "Mo" Samalot on drums and backing vocals, and a few guest performances by friends, including label mates The Avett Brothers. "Songs you'd be glad to hum for the rest of the day" PASTE. Paleface and darling Mo are on an ongoing tour in support of their new record, charming audiences from coast to coast with their high-energy performances, honest and refreshing lyrics and their raw yet full sound. "You might know PF and Mo from their many live appearances with their friends, The Avett Brothers. The group PALEFACE is one of the most dynamic duos on the road. They actually played their first official show as a duo for their peers in our downtown loft during the 2006 Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion. I have enjoyed watching them grow and am quite honored to have them in the lineup this New Year's Eve" Eric Blevins, Broken Strings Productions
"We're so happy to get to celebrate the New Year with our friends in Bristol. We are looking forward to a rocking New Year's Eve." - Paleface

Opening the show will be a new regional favorite, FOLK SOUL REVIVAL.
FOLK SOUL REVIVAL is an upbeat, rootsy acoustic group from the mountains of Appalachia. Their diversity, creativity and passion are evident among those who have witnessed the boys hone their craft onstage. With their distinct vocal approaches, back-porch instrumentation, haunting four-part harmonies and sheer talent, the boys have garnered much success and have attracted a large following. FOLK SOUL REVIVAL have shared the stage with such high profile acts as Jason Isbell (of Drive-By Truckers fame), vocalist Justin Townes Earle (Steve Earle's son), Tim Easton, Mel McDaniel, The Felice Brothers. "Good Enough" was released this past April, independently, and has been a sweeping success. FOLK SOUL REVIVAL has just attracted the attention of Lonesome Records, out of Big Stone Gap, VA, so talk of a follow up is commencing. Hailing from the Appalachians, with its expressive and traditional musical heritage, has helped to shape and define the sound of FOLK SOUL REVIVAL. However, each of the individual musicians bring some of their own, unique and personal influences to the group, and as a result, the music is a fresh amalgamation of what Americana music should be. FOLK SOUL REVIVAL is a crowd pleasing reminder of the essence of live music. Their ability to perform toe tapping- jug band type jams, touching ballads about love and loss, traditional folk type songs, and the occasional unique take on some long forgotten classic Top-40 hit are what keep the seats filled and the show-goers smiling. Truly they are "just the right mix of rowdy and roots."
"I recently saw these guys open up for Justin Townes Earle and Jessica Lea Mayfield at Machiavelli's in downtown Bristol and was overwhelmed by how many fans in the crowd knew every word to their songs. They really rocked that place!" - Eric Blevins, Broken Strings Productions
Tickets may be purchased online by credit card and printed from home @ or in person @ Mountain Aire Music located at 505 State Street by cash or check only. |

If you did not read in the paper, here is a great article about BCMA's Cultural Heritage Center.
Lawmakers back Bristol cultural heritage project, present balance of grant money.
By David McGee | Staff Writer / Bristol Herald Courier Published: December 1, 2009
BRISTOL, Va. - Area lawmakers endorsed the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance cultural heritage center Monday, while presenting the balance of $1.95 million in grant money for the project. Earlier this year, the Bristol-based nonprofit alliance received $1.7 million from the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission. Officials presented the $250,000 balance during a Monday news conference. "We stand behind you," state Sen. William Wampler of Bristol said, adding that he looks forward to significant work on the $10 million heritage center beginning in the "not too distant future." In the five years since the BCMA began efforts to establish the musical heritage center inside a vacant Cumberland Street building, the commission has approved about $2.5 million in funding. The BCMA project would showcase the legacy of the 1927 Bristol recording sessions known as the "big bang" of commercial country music, and the region's other contributions to bluegrass and country music. The facility would greatly aid marketing the region, said state Delegate Terry Kilgore, R-Gate City, the commission's vice chairman. "This is important to our overall plan of marketing The Crooked Road and the work going on in Abingdon at the regional heritage center," said Kilgore, referring to a new $14 million artisan center at Virginia Highlands Community College. "This [BCMA facility] will be an integral part of what we're doing to promote cultural activities here in Southwest Virginia." The Bristol site would also complement existing musical heritage centers like the Carter Family Fold in Maces Springs in Scott County and the Ralph Stanley Museum in Clintwood, state Sen. Phillip Puckett, D-Lebanon, said. Both have received commission funding. "We've [the commission] made huge investments in the tourism piece that we think will produce huge dividends in the future," Puckett said. A study by the University of Virginia's Weldon Cooper Center predicts the BCMA heritage center would attract 75,000 annual visitors and have a $43 million economic impact during its first five years. "A lot of people say why give this money for music," state Delegate Joe Johnson, D-Abingdon, said. "But this will be a beautiful, useful facility and a lasting tribute to our musical heritage." The BCMA's formal fundraising efforts have been under way for more than a year, but more money is needed before it can put the $10 million overhaul of the former auto dealership out for bids. About $1.5 million has already been invested in planning, design and preliminary site work. The BCMA also awaits word on an application for a nearly $4.4 million loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's program for rural development for community facilities. Confirmation of that request, combined with some additional private donations, would trigger putting the project out for bid, fundraising Chairman Kevin Triplett said, adding that they are also trying to raise about $3 million for operating expenses. In the meantime, alliance officials don't plan to access much of the remaining $1.7 million without additional private contributions. "The $1.7 [million] is there, but to make it active we have to leverage that money with other private donors," Triplett said. "We've had very good conversations with a lot of people. We've done what we said we'd do and gotten the public funding first." The commission's $250,000 check will be used immediately to address a water runoff problem at the rear of the building, Triplett said. Additional site work is planned for next year. Other grant money is earmarked for two specific areas - technical equipment for exhibits and site improvements. "This project will be completed," Triplett said. "And it will be something this community and the region can be very proud of." dmcgee@bristolnews.com | (276) 645-2532 |

Appalachian GhostWalks Presents "Ghosts of Christmas Past"
Middle East and Northeast Tennessee -- Since the days that the first English Settlers began arriving here on the North America Continent 'ghost stories' were told around the hearth at Christmastime. This we know according to the colony diaries of Jamestown, Virginia written in the seventeenth century. Appalachian GhostWalks invites you to start a new family holiday tradition this Christmas season and bring your whole family, or tour group out to enjoy the fresh mountain air, catch a snowflake or two, and enjoy the old fashioned holiday decorations - all as you tour the oldest towns in East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.
With tours appropriate for ages five and up, tour goers will enjoy a historic adventure learning about the history of Christmas dating back 4,000 years, while chancing to visit with the "People of the Past". Each historically accurate tour keeps one of our oldest holiday traditions "alive" by offering a small piece of a much larger puzzle of East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia history as your guide weaves a chilly tale of our region's vast cultural heritage coupled with true, spine-tingling ghost stories.
Each tour operates for as few as two people and one simple phone call will enable you to create a memorable and year-round experience throughout the historic districts in America's First Western Frontier Towns. There are twelve different ghost and history tours conveniently located near you to include all of the following: Historic Dandridge, Erwin and Unicoi County Heritage Museum, the East Tennessee State University Campus, Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site, Greeneville, Rogersville, Blountville, downtown Johnson City's "Little Chicago GhostWalk" and Jonesborough - once listed on the Travel Channel as one of the top ten most haunted towns in America! Other haunted historic tours presently include the historic districts of Bristol, also known as the "Birthplace of Country Music" and Abingdon, Virginia - the gateway to America's First Western Frontier. Several bus tours are currently under production for a 2010 inauguration to include the Upper and Lower "Great Smoky Mountains Haunted Adventure Tours" and the "Great Stage Road Haunted Adventure Tour". These tours will include historic sites along the Blue Ridge Parkway and Cades Cove, as well as several 'highly spirited' stops along Tennessee's oldest state road. "Ghosts of Christmas Past" Holiday Ghost and History Tours are operating now through January 15th, 2009. However, all of Appalachian GhostWalks' walking and bus tours operate year-round by advance reservation. Simply call (423) 743-WALK (9255) with the number in party, the tour of choice, and the date your party would like to tour.
Ten percent of the company's annual profits go to benefit Saint Jude's Children's Research Hospital so come out and support a great cause as you enjoy the holiday thrills, chills, mysteries, history, and true Christmas ghost stories of our Southern Appalachian Mountains.
In the words of Appalachian GhostWalks, "There will be scary ghost stories and tales of the glories of Christmas' long, long ago"... For additional information, visit their website at www.AppalachianGhostWalks.com or call (423) 743-WALK (9255) for reservations.
PLEASE NOTE: As our Christmas Gift to you, a $1 off coupon has been attached for recipients of this message to use this holiday season. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from Appalachian GhostWalks!!! |
