November's featured business is
troutdale bistro

The Troutdale Bistro is owned by local proprietors Ben and Debra Zandi, owners of Troutdale Kitchens and of the Troutdale Dining Room.  Troutdale Bistro's recipe for success is fresh ingredients produced by local farms and prepared by Chef Jassen Campbell and staff, whose Italian influenced menu focuses on regional products. The menu changes seasonally and features creative and delicious daily additions.

The Troutdale Bistro is proud to salute East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia artisans, farmers, and craftsmen whose dedication and passion for food create the finest ingredients possible.  The Bistro is passionate about bringing these fresh, natural, organic, and sustainable products straight from their farms.

About The Chef Jassen Campbell

Growing up in Elizabethton, Jassen attended Johnson & Wales University in Charleston, South Carolina. While graduating with two degrees in four years, Jassen was an apprentice at the restaurant 82 Queen. Jassen is an alumnus of McCrady's in Charleston, South Carolina, Upstream in Charlotte, North Carolina, and CQ's in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Chef Jassen continues to strive to learn and bring a unique dining experience to the Appalachian region highlighting local farmers and growers.

Chef Jassen works closely with local farms through Appalachian Sustainable Development (ASD), a not-for-profit organization working in the Appalachian region of Virginia and Tennessee. Formed in 1995, ASD focuses on developing healthy, diverse and ecologically sound economic opportunities through education and training, and the development of cooperative networks and marketing systems. ASD links consumers with farmers and producers and provides hands-on opportunities for learning, advocacy and civic engagement.

Jassen incorporates the seasonal offerings of small local farms and purveyors as well as sustainable beef, lamb, pork, poultry and seafood for simply prepared cuisine. The eggs for pasta  and desserts come from Appalachian Harvest. Templeton Farms supplies the restaurant with beautiful free range raised chickens. The grass finished beef and pork is brought to the restaurant by Rich Valley Grazers in Saltville, Virginia. Our lamb is supplied from Thorntree Farm in Nicklesville, Virginia. A slew of growers provide their harvest of Appalachian grown produce to Troutdale Bistro: Blue Door Garden, Abingdon Organics, Rich Valley Farm, Chilly's Case, Frosted Hawk Farm, and Urban Homestead. These are just a few of the growers that allow them to do what they do at the Bistro and the list of farmers continues to grow! The majority of seafood purchased for daily features is off boats from the North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia Coast; our fishmonger who travels each week to meet the fishermen delivers these straight from the boats.

So please visit Troutdale Bistro where they offer gourmet dining prepared with fresh local ingredients in a casual, friendly atmosphere!

Scythian!

All Ages Concert!

November 6, 2009 -8pm, Tickets are $20 adv/$25 at the Door
Scythian will return to Historic Downtown Bristol, VA/TN. The rousing and raucous, Scythian (sith-ee-yin) plays kicked-up Celtic and world music with hints of Gypsy and Klezmer, all infused with a touch of punk-rock sensibility.

"Scythian was a crowd favorite in 2008 and 2009 at the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion. Their energy and crowd participation is something to behold. They were in the top five merchandise sellers at our festival. Their showis not to be missed!" Leah Ross, Executive Director Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion

Take a pair of classically trained dueling fiddlers, toss in a rhythm guitar and the occasional funky accordion, then power it with the driving rhythm of a jazz percussionist, and you've got the ingredients for a show you won't soon forget. Their high-energy, adrenaline-peddling, interactive brand of music has one goal in mind; to get people on their feet and dancing. Their repertoire ranges from traditional and contemporary Celtic and folk music to the alluring and dramatic strains of Gypsy and Eastern European tunes, and then crosses back over the border to pick up some good old-fashioned bluegrass licks.

In just over a year Bristol has gone from a vague spot on a map to one of our favorite stops and we're very excited about coming back and playing the train station - a unique setting that will promise to make for a dynamite show. Hope ya'll can make it out and kick up some dust with us!" Dan Fedoryka, Scythian

Bud Phillips To Speak On East Hill Cemetery

East Hill Cemetery has long been recognized as the most notable cemetery in both Bristol's.  In recent months efforts have been made for nominating the cemetery as a landmark in both states which is necessary as the state line divides this historic property in half.  This important effort will bring due attention to the cemetery that traces it origins to the beginning of the Twin-Cities.  V.N. "Bud" Phillips will present a program entitled, "The Living Legacy of Bristol's East Hill Cemetery", which will highlight the cemetery's over 150 years of history.  The presentation will be held on Monday November 9 at the Bristol Public Library in the J. Henry Kegley Meeting Room and begin at 6:30pm.  The gathering is a general membership meeting of the Bristol Historical Association and is open and free to the public.

Phillips states that "East Hill Cemetery is of immense importance to the history of Bristol".  It was a significant location during the time of one of Sapling Grove's first permanent residents, General Evan Shelby, who named the hill "Maryland Hill" after his home state.  It only became a cemetery site shortly after the founding of both cities.  In 1857 a young child named Nellie Gaines was buried on Round Hill with permission of its owner, Samuel Goodson, who was also the co-founder of what is now Bristol Virginia.  It was only months later that other burials followed
and made the hill east of downtown Bristol the city cemetery.  It now holds in legacy of over thirty-eight hundred known burials and covers over 36 acres.

The cemetery is the resting place of many notable citizens, including the founders of Bristol and Goodsonville, Joseph Anderson & Colonel Samuel Goodson, as well as the noted eighteenth century resident General Evan Shelby.  Shelby was a noted Indian
Wars hero who built a trading station at Fort Shelby, the first business enterprise in the region. Others long interred in the cemetery are Reverend James King - the second generation owner of present downtown Bristol and the founder of King College, Oliver Taylor - the Father of the Arts in the Mountain Empire, and James Doak Tadlock - an early educator and second president of King College. Notable to the history of East Hill is the Confederate section, which contains 101 burials, all but three unmarked, and the burial and marker to James Keeling.  Keeling was the confederate hero that was named the "South's Horatius" for saving a prominent railroad bridge at Strawberry Plains Tennessee.

Birthplace of Country Music Alliance presents Conductor Jack, "Hank and Jimmie Loved Trains" November 19 at Bristol Train Station

"This type of programming allows the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance to expose a young audience to folk and country music and the roots of that music," commented Bill Hartley, Executive Director.  By offering this programming in a fun way, the organization hopes to use this as a pilot program for other educational offerings as part of the programming for its planned Cultural Heritage Center.   Hartley noted that the organization will also be holding a special morning performance for preschool children in addition to the public performance that evening.

"Conductor Jack" specializes in performing original, organic music for families and is committed to bringing age-appropriate music to preschool children in a gentle and friendly manner.  Jack's dedication to his craft, energetic live performances, and his respect and honor of children, makes him one of today's foremost family-friendly entertainers.  One of the hardest working children's musicians touring today, Jack performs an average of 350 shows a year. He recently toured Tennessee with Governor Phil Bredesen to promote Dolly Parton's Imagination Library program.

Jack was recently named, "Best Kids Entertainer" by the Readers Choice Poll in Nashville Parent Magazine. His fans include country superstar Brad Paisley and wife Kimberly Williams-Paisley, who bring their young sun Huck to Jack's shows.

Conductor Jack is strongly influenced by the music of early country pioneers. "I am obsessed with the Singing Brakeman, Jimmie Rodgers. So I'm especially excited about this show in Bristol," said Jack.

Jack is so influenced by the Grandfather of Country Music, that he developed an entire show to promote the music of Jimmie Rodgers and Hank Williams to preschoolers and elementary age kids. Entitled "Hank and Jimmie Loved Trains," the show offers up the history of country and folk music in a fun and engaging way for young kids.  Originally commissioned by the Country Music Hall Of Fame and Museum in Nashville, this is Jack's most popular program.

Preschool and elementary age children will enjoy this simple introduction to the music of country pioneers Hank Williams and Jimmie Rodgers ("The Singing Brakeman").  Hartley also added that the setting is perfect for a program on musical heritage and trains, as not only does the Bristol Train Station sit within 50 yards of both the site of the 1927 Bristol Session recordings and the studio for WCYB's Farm and Fun Time radio show, but it sits next to an active train line with the sound of a locomotive occasionally heard as the backdrop.

The Birthplace of Country Music Alliance is a non-profit organization dedicated to telling the story of the living musical heritage of the Appalachian mountains and the cultural traditions that sustain it. The Birthplace of Country Music Alliance is funded in part by grants from the Virginia Commission for the Arts, the Tennessee Arts Commission, and National Endowment for the Arts.  For more information, call (276) 645-0111 or visit online at

Crawling critters replaced on State Street
By Claire Galofaro | Police Beat Reporter - Bristol Herald Courier

Published: November 1, 2009

A trio of tiny bronze caterpillars, abducted four months ago from State Street sidewalks, were replaced Halloween morning just as 250 candy-crazed children swarmed the street.

The sculptures were ripped from their mountings in June, just weeks after they debuted as three stops on a 10-part kiddie scavenger hunt through downtown Bristol.
"These are the significantly beefed up models," artist Val Lyle said as she dunked two 6-inch, stainless-steel bolts protruding from a cocoon's undercarriage into a foot of wet concrete. It was her first replacement of the day, on a guardrail at the corner of Piedmont Avenue and State Street, and she almost dared the burglars to try it again.
"If they want to take this now, I recommend tying a chain to this guardrail and taking the whole thing."
Transformers and Incredible Hulks and one cowboy with a painted-on beard lumbered by as Lyle said they specifically chose the holiday because it, like the Crawl, was a celebration of youth.

The Caterpillar Crawl, inspired by the children's book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," sends kids down State Street with a lime green map and a list of clues. Along the way, they find 10 little bronze sculptures tucked away, half in Tennessee and half in Virginia. Three were stolen one June night from the Virginia side: the guardrail cocoon, a chubby caterpillar on the steps of the Wachovia ATM and one lounging on an orange at the corner outside Java J's. The Junior League set up an anonymous tip line and scoured local pawn shops and scrap metal joints, but despite promises of amnesty and rewards for information, the critters never resurfaced. Shortly after the heist, Junior League president Katy Sikorski said the critters cost $500 each. "We're going to replace them, and we're going to keep replacing them," she pledged. "That's $1,500 from our budget that would go to hungry kids, promoting children's literacy, to children's classrooms. It's the pits, it truly is the pits."

Back then, Lyle warned of the long and very laborious replacement process, as each piece is handmade and takes weeks to finish. So the crew set out to create a temporary fix so kids could keep doing the hunt. First they tried laminating photographs that they taped, glued, then liquid nailed to the sites. But each time, the stand-in was stolen, or blew away, within hours. Then Lyle created replacements in epoxy - little wiggly, worm-like creatures - and finally, the caterpillars got some peace. "They're ugly enough," Lyle said. "I guess nobody wanted them." Lyle said she's going to leave the epoxy versions in place, roughly adhered inches away from their bronze counterparts, as something of a reminder of how hard they worked to keep the hunt going.
"If you've ever actually seen the kids doing the Caterpillar Crawl - it's awesome," Lyle said, after moving on to the caterpillar home at the Wachovia ATM.

A crew of children stopped by to inquire, then got distracted by a dog in a skirt and a wig. Lyle just smiled, and said she's glad to have the caterpillars back.
"Thank you for replacing them," said passer-by Fara Childers, the mother of a 5-month-old pirate and a 9-year-old grim reaper. "We've been looking forward to it. It's just awful that a few people in a community can bring such disappointment to these kids." Lyle's "make-it-work man," Anthony Dean, drilled a hole a foot deep into the brick, kicking up red dust. He said Lyle had been bent on replacing them, and he wasn't going to try to talk her out of it. "If there's one thing I've learned, it's don't try to change an artist's mind," Dean said. "If they tell you to make it green with pink polka dots, just get out your polka dot brush whether you want to or not."

Bristol Chamber of Commerce Reveals Christmas Parade Plans
Thursday, December 3rd

- Although the memory of summer is still fresh, and the brilliant hues of autumn have yet to emerge, the Bristol Chamber of Commerce has finalized details for the 28th Annual Downtown Bristol Christmas Parade.

Grand Marshals for the parade will be J4, winners of CBS' Early Show Singing Family Face-Off. J4 is a family of six from Bluff City, TN comprised of Jessi, age 16, Jeddi, age 14, Josiah, age 9 and Sophi, age 7. Each of the siblings brings something different to their sound, which is drawn from a variety of styles. J4 will lead floats, marching bands and precede the official arrival of that notable ambassador from the North Pole, Santa.

"In recent years, the public has requested the annual Christmas Parade be held in the evening," said Lisa Meadows, President and CEO of the Bristol Chamber of Commerce. "An evening event lends to the festive holiday atmosphere downtown, and will help usher in a holiday season that harkens back to another time as our eclectic group of downtown restaurants, businesses and boutiques welcome parade-goers to a vibrant and thriving retail center," she added.

Local businesses, civic and volunteer organizations, church groups, bands, schools, neighborhood groups and beauty contestants are all invited to participate. Parade entry fees are: Commercial/Float, $130; Commercial/Non-Float, $45; Non-Profit/Float, $30; and Beauty Contestants, $35 (beauty contestants must furnish their own vehicle).

To accommodate the parade route, the cities will close Bob Morrison Boulevard and State Street to through traffic beginning at 5 p.m. on December 3. Parade participants will convene in the parking lot of the former Goody's location on Bob Morrison Boulevard beginning at 5:30 p.m., where they will be placed in the parade lineup.

Corporate sponsors for the 28th Annual Downtown Bristol Christmas Parade include: Bristol Herald Courier, Bristol Tennessee Essential Services, Bristol Virginia Utilities, Dex, Publisher of the EMBARQ Yellow pages, Snack Alliance, the Cities of Bristol, Tennessee and Bristol, Virginia and the Bristol Chamber of Commerce.

The deadline for parade entry is Wednesday, November 18, 2009. For additional information, contact: Trish Buckles, Bristol Chamber of Commerce, 423.989.4850 or tbuckles@bristolchamber.org.

Things to look forward to in December:

The Bristol Public Library's Reference Database is expanding its usefulness by providing easy access to fund reports in a PDF format through Morningstar® Mutual Funds Online. Individual reports are updated every Friday. Find a fund report by typing the fund's ticker into the Search Box. Issues of Morningstar Mutual Funds are updated as they go to press.

While this service is free, you must call the library to ask for the password at 276-645-8781. Once you sign up, you can create a list of your favorite funds so that when you return to Morningstar Mutual Funds Online, you do not have to search for your funds one by one. Instead, you'll just log in and click on the My Favorites links to retrieve up-to-date reports of your funds.

This database is just one of the many free services the Bristol Public Library provides. For questions about this resource or any other library services, call 276-821-6148 or visit www.bristol-library.org.
