Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion!

RRR 2009 Poster
In 1927, Ralph Peer turned the musical world on its ear when he came to Bristol to discover the next great thing in American music. Many of the artists he recorded during the Bristol Sessions - folks like Jimmie Rodgers, The Carter Family, and The Stonemans - became the roots of the country music tree.  Now, Bristol celebrates its role in the origins of country music each September with the Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion.  In its ninth year, the Reunion brings music fans from across the globe to State Street to hear the best folk, country, Americana, roots rock, and bluegrass musicians in the business.

The 2009 Reunion promises to be the greatest yet.  With a line up deeper and more diverse than ever before, festival goers will be faced with the perplexing question, "Who should I go see now?"  And, because of the richness of the line up, the answer to that question will never be easy!  Scheduled to appear are Patty Loveless, Tim O'Brien, Darrell Scott, Dr. Dog, Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, Dan Tyminski, Dailey & Vincent, Holy Ghost Tent Revival, Corey Harris, John Cowan, The SteelDrivers, Peter Rowan, Cadillac Sky, and The Hackensaw Boys, Gene Watson, among others.

So put September 18th-20th on your calendar.  Your ears will thank you!

In addition to praise from The WaII Street Journal and Time, he has been cheered by sources ranging from Richard Nixon to Vogue (which named him "one of the five men you'd most want to sit next to at a dinner party"). Benefit Concert for Mark Mervis!

A Bluegrass benefit concert will be held for Mark Mervis, founder and bass player for Wires and Wood and former member of the board of directors  of Birthplace of Country Music Alliance. The concert will be held on Thursday, September 24 from 7:30PM until 10:00PM at The Paramount Center for the Arts, Bristol, TN.  Admission to the concert will be a donation, with proceeds going directly to Mark.

Mark received a liver transplant at the University of Virginia Hospital earlier this summer and has mounting medical bills from his treatment.

The following bands are scheduled to perform during the benefit concert: Duty Free, The Fall Creek Band and Wires and Wood. Also volunteering their time and talents will be Darrell Webb, Robert Hale, Daniel Grindstaff, Johnny Miller, Tom and Beverly Horton, Tim Laughlin, David Yates, Kevin Jackson, Claiborne Woodall, Rachael Johnson, Adam Graybeal and other special guests.

Raised in Bristol, TN, Mark developed his love for Bluegrass and Old-Time music listening to Doc Watson and making the weekly trek to Webb's Store in Hickory Tree every Saturday night. After a "musical detour" that took him through the folk scene, rock and roll, and rock-a-billy Mark found his way back to his original musical love- Bluegrass. In the mid-1990's Mark met the other Wires and Wood band members at a Sunday night jam session and a friendship was formed. Mark made the transition from guitar to bass in 2000. In 2001, Wires and Wood played their first show at the Bristol Motor Speedway and they continue to perform locally and regionally. Mark lives in Bristol, VA with his wife Lelia and daughter Chelsea.

Birthplace of Country Music Alliance Adds New Board Members

BCMA new board 09

The Birthplace of Country Music Alliance voted at their June 9, 2009 board meeting to add eight new board members to its roster increasing the number on the board from 13 to 21. The board also elected new officers for fiscal year 2010.  For the fiscal year ending June 2010, the officers will be:  Edd Hill, President; John Rainero, President- Elect; David Deal, Vice President; Richard Rollins, Secretary; and Nita Vollmer, Treasurer.

Fred McClellan stepped down from his long held position of president. "I appreciate the support of the members of the board of directors and staff in helping me guide the organization to this point," noted McClellan.  He stated that he has witnessed the organization's transformation from a handful of individuals with a vision to an organization developing a multi-million dollar facility.  McClellan noted that it was time for a change in leadership at this point in the organization's development, as these efforts would broaden the Board's leadership base and build in a leadership succession plan.  "As we enter into the construction phase next year, I can think of no-one better equipped to lead the organization than Edd Hill."

"I appreciate the leadership and hard work of Fred McClellan the past four years in getting the organization to this point," commented Hill.  "I hope to be able to build upon his achievements as the organization continues to grow".  Hill, President and CEO of HVAC, Inc. of Bristol, assumed the position of President of the Board of Directors in July 2009.

New members of the board effective July1 are Susan Carson, Jim Elliott, Emily Everett, Brock Fleenor, Ken Hale, Mike Milhorn, Charlotte Mullins, and Richard Rollins.

First R&RR poster

The posters for Bristol's Rhythm & Roots Reunion have become a popular collector's item. Now the Bristol Public Library has all past years of posters on display in the Virgie R. Fleenor Art Gallery.

Thanks go to Ed Harlow, a volunteer of Rhythm & Roots since its inception in 2000, who generously lent the library these great works for the month of September. "I am so pleased to have the opportunity to see all of the posters displayed in a public place. They just look so wonderful when they are placed together. And they bring back memories of festivals past," says Harlow.

"Rhythm & Roots Posters Through the Years" will be on display Sept 1-30. A list of all artists that contributed to these posters is available in the exhibit.
This is the 9th year for the music festival which runs September 18-20 in downtown Bristol, Tennessee/Virginia.
Reminder: The library is open Monday- Thursday 9 a.m.-8 p.m., Friday- Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays 2 p.m.-5 p.m.

Eduardo Zayas-Bazan and Robert Higgs, authors of The Flying Fish- Monday, September 28th at 7:00 pm in the J. Henry Kegley Meeting Room

The authors, Eduardo Zayas-Bazan and Robert Higgs, of the book The Flying Fish will be joining the Bristol Public Library on Monday, September 28th at 7:00 pm in the J. Henry Kegley Meeting Room.

Both authors are former ETSU professors and bring a wealth of talent and experience to their work. Zayas-Bazan, a retired Spanish professor, was a frogman in the Bay of Pigs Invasion, was captured, and ransomed to the American government. His experiences provide the lifeblood of the novel. Higgs, a retired English professor, has written numerous articles and books. His regard for language and a fascinating story provide the solid framework upon which the novel is developed. Romance, war, coming-of-age, actual history, and celebrity trivia--all are integral parts of The Flying Fish. Appropriately, these two talented and respected professors merge their respective gifts to create a remarkable work of historical fiction.

Get the Smartest Card @ your libraryŽ

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and the Bristol Public Library wants to make sure that all of Bristol and especially children have the smartest card of all - a library card.

Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.

Some of the activities we'll be promoting during Library Card Sign-up Month include every child who signs up for a card will receive a free gift from the Children's Department and there will be a contest for which school has the most children sign up for a card!

"A library card has always been the most important school supply of all," says library director, Jud Barry.  "Kids can come to the library to get homework help and check out books, but they can also play games, check out music, books and DVDs and use the Internet to help make after school life fun.  There's a lot happening at the Bristol Public Library, and the best part for both kids and parents is that it's all free with a library card."

Getting a library card is easy.  Stop by with our circulation desk with two forms of id and we'll get you started. If you're younger than 18, you'll need a parent or guardian to sign-up with you.

Observed since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month is a time when the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all.

For more information on how to sign up for a library card, visit the Bristol Public Library at 701 Goode Street in Bristol, VA, call 276-821-6148 or visit the library online at www.bristol-library.org.
