For some people when they think of a pool hall they think dirty and smokey. Fortunately for Bristol, Borderline Billiards is a first-class facility that is family-friendly, non-smoking and full of beauty & excitement! Janet Atwell, owner of Borderline Billiards is a full-time touring member of The Women's Professional Billiards Association (WPBA). Janet grew up in Abingdon and has always loved the sport. Janet is ranked in the top of the touring professionals and travels all over the country to play pool. Here in downtown you might just find her playing by herself, practicing and sharpening her shots down at Borderline, and if you are really lucky, she might show you some of her tricks! Janet opened Borderline about three years ago and says she was very much involved with the design of the facility. This is a big year for Janet as Borderline is hosting the first inaugural WPBA Satellite Tour July 10 - 12th. Janet exclaims she is thrilled to host the satellite tour here in Bristol! "I could not have done this event without everyone pitching in to help" she says. Janet plans to play in the event but says her priority will be more focused on providing a pleasurable experience for the players and fans rather than the outcome of her finish in the tournament.. The tournament will last Friday, Saturday and Sunday with a charity event benefiting The CHAD Team (Caring Hearts for All-Star Dads) on Thursday night. You can find more information about the event at http://www.wpba.com. If you are unable to come to the Tournament, Borderline always has unlimited pool Sunday - Thursday for $5 and they have a DJ or live band on the weekends! This all in addition to free ping-pong and a great selection of food and drinks....... you will definitely "run-the-table" at Borderline Billiards! http:www.borderlinebillards.com http://www.myspace.com/borderlinedowntown

Women's Professional Billiard Association - Statellite Tour Event
THE WPBA ANNOUNCES ITS FIRST SATELLITE TOUR EVENT AT THE BORDERLINE BILLIARDS IN BRISTOL, TN
FRIDAY July 10th- SUNDAY July 12th

The Women's Professional Billiard Association is pleased to announce that Borderline Billiards, owned by WPBA Exempt Professional Janet Atwell, will play host to the WPBA's first Satellite Tour Event, July 10th - 12th, 2009. The WPBA Satellite Tour will be a series of non-televised tournaments which offers an opportunity to all players to compete against top WPBA Exempt Professionals outside of WPBA Classic Tour Events. Janet Atwell, Owner/Proprietor of Borderline Billiards, is excited to host the inaugural Tournament. "It has always been my goal to change the public's perception of billiards and have it see billiards as the classy and competitive sport that it truly is. The start to reaching that goal came when I renovated a 1929 building in historic downtown Bristol, TN and opened Borderline Billiards. Bristol is known around the country as the "Birthplace of Country Music" and the world's fastest half-mile NASCAR track. It is my hope that by hosting a WPBA Satellite Event such as this, Bristol will also be known for "billiards the way it ought to be". Borderline Billiards is adding $10,000 to the prize fund. The field will consist of 64 competitors made up of Exempt players and amateurs alike. WPBA Exempt Professionals will receive Priority Registration beginning May 11th, 2009 until May 25th, 2009. Thereafter the registration will open up to all players on a first come, first serve basis until all 64 spots are filled. The entry fee will be $150, with payouts going to 50% of the field. Featured players who have already committed to participate include Allison Fisher, Sarah Rousey, Ewa Laurance and Tiffany Nelson-Crain. Ticket information to attend the Borderline Billiards Satellite Tour Event will be available soon. Melissa Herndon, WPBA Board Secretary and top Exempt Professional, has this to say about the WPBA Satellite Tour event at Borderline Billiards, "As a WPBA Board Member, I'm thrilled to finally see the launch of the Satellite Tour program. The Satellite Tour is intended to bring the WPBA experience to areas that might not host a Classic Tour anywhere nearby...and to give the WPBA players more opportunity to compete between Classic Tour events. I think it very appropriate that our first event will be at a venue established and owned by one of our very own WPBA Exempt Pros, Janet Atwell. As a WPBA player, I'm looking forward to experiencing some of that famous Tennessee hospitality when I head to Borderline Billiards to compete. Janet Atwell is a terrific player and a great friend of mine, and I think she has done a wonderful thing by putting this incredible tournament on. I'm really excited about the whole experience...and I can't wait for July to roll around!"
Ewa Laurance, WPBA Hall of Fame Member and top WPBA Exempt Professional, is equally enthusiastic about the event, "I am so excited about our very first official WPBA Satellite Tour Stop! This is something we've been hoping to provide for our players for a very long time and it's so fitting to have one of our own players, Janet Atwell, owner of the beautiful Borderline Billiards hosting the inaugural event. I wouldn't miss it for anything!"
The 2009 Presenting Sponsor for WPBA Web Streaming, Pooldawg.com, is pleased to announce free, live web streaming from this event, including the semi finals & the final match! Stay tuned for more information about free, live web streaming.

There is inspiration beyond the crutches of anxiety and self-contempt. A soul realizing its full potential removed from a dim and murky den is a breeding-ground for vision and artistry. Songs In the Night is the account of this excavation for Samantha Crain, a 22-year-old Oklahoma-based songwriter. Crain's full-length debut is the follow up to 2008's The Confiscation EP -- and her second effort to be released on independent North Carolina label, Ramseur Records. Along with her band the Midnight Shivers (Jacob Edwards, Andrew Tanz and Stephen Sebastian), Crain recorded all eleven tracks in five days at Echo Mountain Studios with producer Danny Kadar (Grizzly Bear, My Morning Jacket, The Avett Brothers).
Songs In the Night plays out to wander confidently in the badlands where abrasive, jangly indie rock and smooth, whispery folk meet. It chronicles the fear she saw in herself and those around her, that assumed embracing health and clarity would, in turn, destroy every particle of poetry and each grain of ingenuity dwelling within the artist. Crain's distinct voice presents each song with an unfeigned fervor as it rises and falls over the panorama painted by the Midnight Shivers and their roots-infused, fertile arrangements. As this album unfolds, the listener can rest easy knowing they are not experiencing illusions-and this band can be comforted with the reassurance they have been genuine. For more information visit www.samanthacrain.com
More than a decade since his last major label release, PALEFACE, a founding member of NYC's Anti-folk movement, is back with The Show Is On The Road (Ramseur Records). The album is an intimate, 11-song diary that transcends genres with its ingenuous lyrics and deceptively unassuming style - just Paleface on guitar, harmonica & banjo, darling Monica "Mo" Samalot on drums and backing vocals and a few guest performances.... Paleface is the sort of artist who brings you into his world - his voice is sweetly ravaged and effortlessly expressive, as intimate as a friend whispering in your ear. The album is farewell love letter to his longtime home, New York City, and an embrace of his new life in the South and on the road with "Mo". For more information visit www.PalefaceOnline.com
Border Bash features live music on the third Friday of every month from May through August, showcasing musicians who will perform later this year at the 9th Annual Rhythm and Roots Reunion. "We hope that individuals, families, and visitors will come downtown to experience Bristol's unique music" commented Bill Hartley, Executive Director of the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance. Hartley added that between the youth activities, artist's exhibits, and musical fare offered that there should be something for everyone. For more information, visit www.believeinbristol.org, www.birthplaceofcountrymusic.org, www.bristolrhythm.com or call (276) 645-0111 or (423) 423-573-2200.

Article Avoid Business Owner Burnout Choosing to go into business for you is a major decision that usually means a commitment to hard work and long hours. As you struggle to build your business, however, you also must be careful not to overdo it and succumb to business owner burnout. It's vital to take some time off to recharge your personal batteries. But there's a problem. Many business owners are afraid to leave, even for a short period. They fear that something will go wrong or they'll miss out on that next big opportunity. With so much to do, how can an entrepreneur ever relax? According to a survey conducted by American Express, 40 percent of the smallest business owners-those with less than $200,000 in annual revenues-plan no vacation time whatsoever in any given year. And even those who do schedule a break never really get away. One of every three link vacation time to a business trip and half will check in with the office at least once a day, if not several times. According to the AmEx survey, these are the vacation-blocking concerns cited most often by business owners: · There is no other competent person to leave in charge and others will make the wrong decisions.
· An important client or customer will not receive appropriate service.
· The business will miss a new opportunity.
· An operational breakdown will occur without anyone to solve the problem. Despite these concerns, you can schedule a refreshing getaway with some careful advance planning. For example, draw up a list of worst-case scenarios and brief those in charge on the possibilities and chief concerns of each customer. Tell key clients or customers in advance of any extended time away you are planning. Introduce your stand-ins and express your confidence in their ability to handle any issues that may arise. If you never delegate important tasks to others at your business, you can't expect them to fill your shoes when you take time off. To create a saner schedule for yourself, and achieve a comfort level that good things will happen when you're not there, learning to delegate responsibilities is vital. These artists will join previously announced acts Robert Cray Band, The Flatlanders, Robin and Linda Williams and Mike Seeger.
"We are excited about the line-up that Mountain Stage has put together for this show in Bristol," noted Bill Hartley, Executive Director of the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance. The performers for the August 16 show display a diversity of styles and talents, ranging from contemporary to traditional and points in between, which represent the roots and branches of the region's musical heritage. The addition of Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson demonstrate the international reach of our region's musical heritage," noted Hartley.
The radio show taping will be held on Sunday, August 16 at the Paramount Theatre at 7:00 pm. Ticket prices for the evening are $25 and are available at the Paramount Center for the Arts box office at 423.274.8920 or visit www.theparamountcenter.com or www.e-tix.com The $25 ticket is a reduction over past Mountain Stage tapings in consideration of today's economic climate. Now in its 26th year, this will be the 700th show produced by Mountain Stage, a production of West Virginia Public Broadcasting. A two-hour radio show recorded before a live audience, Mountain Stage has established a long tradition of featuring national and international acts in almost every style of music. Mountain Stage can be heard weekly on over 100 National Public Radio affiliates throughout the United States, Voice of America, and XM satellite radio. The television program has been carried on over 200 PBS stations nationwide. Since coming to Bristol - just 3 years ago - Mountain Stage has produced 4 radio shows and 6 HDTV releases that originated from Bristol and the Paramount Theatre, reaching millions of listeners and viewers across the nation and throughout the world.
· Robert Cray Band - For thirty-plus years Robert Cray has laid down track after track of good-time, uptown, low-down blues. He's won five Grammys and been nominated for 11 more, inspired critics to praise his soulful vocal and instrumental artistry, earned respect from his peers, and sent young guitarists running back to the woodshed. He played the bassist in the fictional band Otis Day and the Knights in 1998's movie Animal House. His latest album, The Robert Cray Band: Live From Across The Pond, is his first full-length concert CD. ·
The Flatlanders - Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely and Butch Hancock have been friends for almost 40 years, and members of that not-really-a-band, life-of-its-own musical entity known as The Flatlanders for nearly as long. Thirty-seven years after their first recording project together The Flatlanders have released Hills And Valleys. Blending their own unique styles, the album's general theme is "the ups and downs, emotionally, of peoples' lives these days." ·
Robin & Linda Williams -Robin and Linda Williams are like your next-door neighbors - assuming your neighbors are the salt-of-the-earth and top-flight performers to boot. You feel right at home at a Robin and Linda concert, and their music stays with you like an old friend. Favorites of fans and promoters alike, they have crisscrossed the continent (and beyond) for more than three decades, performing the tunes they love and a hearty blend of bluegrass, folk, old-time and acoustic country. They are first-class instrumentalists and superb songwriters, able to, as The Washington Post put it, "sum up a life in a few details with moving completeness." ·
Mike Seeger - the 2009 recipient of the Bess Lomax Hawes NEA National Heritage Fellowship, Mike Seeger stands out in a family of prominent scholars and musical performers as an advocate, a documenter, a teacher, and an artist. Recognized widely for his mastery of the guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, and autoharp, Seeger has recorded musicians who were not known except in their own communities, and thanks to his work, artists such as Dock Boggs, Maybelle Carter, Kilby Snow, Sam and Kirk McGee, and Hazel Dickens reached a broad public audience. Seeger has produced more than 30 documentary recordings and has performed on another 40 recordings.

2 Hot Tickets Available
There are two hot tickets available in the fall in Bristol, TN/VA. One, of course, is the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion weekend ticket that allows you to listen to great music for three days. The other ticket is the most sought after ticket in Nascar, the Sharpie 500 Night Race.

For the first time in years, tickets to the Sharpie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway, the most popular race on the NASCAR circuit, are available.
Rhythm and Roots gets revved up in September but before Bristol plays host to one of the largest music festivals in the South, the city will be dancing to a different tune when Bristol Motor Speedway hosts the most popular races in NASCAR. Long a fan favorite, the sport's most renowned race, the Sharpie 500, takes place Aug. 22. And for the first time in years, tickets are actually available for the famed race, often referred to simply as The Night Race. Tickets are available as part of a package, which includes the Food City 250, also contested under the lights, on Aug. 21. The Food City 250 Nationwide Series race generally draws crowds in excess of 100,000 and features, on average, at least a dozen Sprint Cup drivers. In March, the Speedway made these ticket packages available to fans who had tried unsuccessfully for years to purchase them and recorded its 54th consecutive sellout, a NASCAR record. The August race week features four night races, including the O'Reilly 200 Camping World Truck Series race and the UNOH Perfect Storm 150 Whelen Modified Series event Wednesday, Aug. 19, followed by the Aug. 21 Food City 250. 21. The weekend culminates with the Sharpie 500 Saturday evening. The August ticket package includes tickets for both the Sharpie 500 and the Food City 250. Package prices begin at $145. Also, anyone purchasing a package will be eligible for the buy one, get one free Wednesday night ticket, which includes both the O'Reilly 200 truck event and the Whelen Modified 150. Wednesday tickets are $30. Tickets may be purchased by calling the BMS ticket office at (423) 989-6900 or by visiting www.bristoltix.com.

"Their vibrant and abstract pieces will add something special for people to stop and see at the library," says Teen Librarian, Tonia Totten. The 2009 Summer Reading Program is appropriately called "Be Creative" and so far, the teens have really enjoyed this year's programs such as The Traveling Jones Theater, and are looking forward to taking part in Great Big Faces with Paul Merklein on July 7th. |

REOPENING OF BRISTOL TRAIN STATION CELEBRATED WITH O. WINSTON LINK EXHIBIT
O. Winston Link was an independent professional photographer who documented the final years of steam railroading on the Norfolk & Western Railway; the last class one railroad in America to operate exclusively with steam power. Link's photographs are regarded as one of the best records of this long vanished type of locomotion. While best known for the photographs of the railroad he made at night, Link took pleasure in recording the life of the railroad, its people and the folks who lived along the line, at all hours of the day. In Link's earlier years as a photographer, he became known for his skill in making industrial photos, particularly images of machines or factory processes that required special camera techniques and lighting effects. It was on one such assignment in Staunton, Virginia to photograph the manufacture of air conditioners, Link made the decision to spend the evening in nearby Waynesboro to watch the locomotives of the Norfolk & Western (N&W) Railway, by then the last main line railroad in America to operate exclusively with steam power. The event was so exciting that he came back the next night, January 21, 1955, to make the first photographs of what was to become a five year project, requiring more than 20 trips, ranging from a few days to two weeks, to create this record. The N&W was very supportive and Link continued to photograph until all steam operations were discontinued in May, 1960. Financing the entire project himself, Link's photographs received their first museum exhibition in 1983, almost 30 years after the project began. Since then, his achievements have received international recognition, and his photographs are displayed in many museums, corporate and private collections. Link died on January 30, 2001. The O. Winston Link exhibit is open to the public on Saturday, July 4 during Celebrate Bristol's Star Spangled Weekend, 1-7:30 P.M. and Monday July 6 through Thursday, July 9, 1-7:30 P.M. at the Bristol Train Station, 101 Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard., Bristol, VA. Admission is free.
