June Feature:
The Paramount Center for the Arts
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Paramount is an excellent example of the art deco motion picture palaces built in the late 1920's and early 1030's. The restoration, completed in spring of 1991, retained the Paramount's opulent, richly embellished interior. You'll feel as though you are a part of the performance from any one of the 750 seats. The Paramount showcases great performances-classic and contemporary-in music, dance and drama, featuring outstanding presentations by a wealth of regional artists. The Paramount also presents a season of professional, touring productions which has enabled the theatre to offer its audience season ticket subscriptions. The Paramount offers the David Caldwell Tunes @ Noon concert series during the summer, now in its 10th year. Each one-hour concert takes place on Fridays, beginning this year on June 12th and ending on August 7th (with the exception of July 3rd). Bristol Music Club's scholarship winners, The Young Artists' Concert, begins the series this year and is always an outstanding and inspiring presentation. Other artists featured include Jonathan Knight, pianist, Tim Landis, basso, Rex Ward on the Mighty WurliTzer organ and the Cambia Flute Ensemble, among others. The Paramount does this series not only to showcase these artists, but also to draw folks to town for an afternoon of entertainment, shopping and dining at our many fine restaurants. Admission to Tunes @ Noon is a suggested $5.00 donation. The Paramount is a 501 c (3) organization which relies on the generosity of patrons and business support in order to offer the highest quality of programming while also taking care to keep the theatre maintained. It is the stage on which many other non-profit organizations perform to raise funding, and also serves countless musicians, dancers, storytellers, lecturers, ministries and visual artists, as well as being a main stage for a rapidly growing Rhythm & Roots Reunion.

Those Darlins and Oneside to perform at Border Bash
FRIDAY, June 19th
6:00 pm Children's Activities
7:00 pm Those Darlins
8:30 pm Oneside
Border Bash, a monthly concert series in historic downtown Bristol, continues its 10th Year concert series on June 19th in the 600 block of State Street. The evening's events will start with children's activities, crafters, and concessions at 6PM. Live music begins at 7:00PM with Those Darlins followed by Oneside at 8:30PM. Border Bash is free to the public!
"We are thrilled that this is Border Bash's 10th Anniversary!" commented Christina Blevins, Executive Director of Believe in Bristol. Blevins added "With the continual growth of Border Bash and downtown, we want to showcase our beautiful State Street, so this year we will be moving from block to block, this is a huge change since we have been on the 500 Block for the past 9 years. This will give the opportunity for all the stores and restaurants downtown to play an active part in our celebration. Come and enjoy this milestone with us. We hope to see you on State Street!"
The event is hosted by Believe in Bristol, Birthplace of Country Music Alliance, and Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion. Sponsors for 2009 are: Gold Sponsors - Wachovia, PennStuart, Dent K. Burk & Associates, Citadel Broadcasting, Nash & Powers Insurance, Greg Fahn, Rita Mercier, and Rob Simis- Edward Jones, Merrill Lynch, Cherokee Distributing-Coors Light, Waste Management, and Blakley-Mitchell. Silver Sponsors- Coca - Cola Distributing, Campbell Printing, Curcio & Stout and Kerr-Boswell, Inc. Media Sponsors-Citadel Broadcasting, CW4 and Fox, and Bristol Herald Courier.
The best pop groups create their own universe, and make up their own ways of playing music and dealing with the big, bad world outside. Those Darlins are a pop group, if they are any one thing, which doesn't mean anybody with ears can't hear the country and rock 'n' roll in their sound and stance. Or maybe this trio of young women (early twenties, although no one's telling exactly), who live a long stone's throw from Nashville, Tennessee in the college town of Murfreesboro, are punks straight out of London or Cleveland, 1977.
Being informed by Nashville and its intersecting indie, pop and country scenes, and aware of the twisted tradition of Appalachian roots music that stretches back to the Carter Family, Those Darlins nevertheless aren't of Nashville. They write their own songs, record in New York City, and talk convincingly about female empowerment, music history and egalitarian ideals of performance and business.
The rockers in question are Kelley Darlin, the group's bassist, Jessi Darlin, who plays guitar, and Nikki Darlin, on baritone ukulele. Everyone sings. Playing mostly in and around Nashville, they attracted immediate attention for their raucous, cheerfully sarcastic and sometimes booze-fueled live show and unique play of their distinct personalities. For more on Those Darlins visit http://www.thosedarlins.com/bio.html
Oneside's Ned DeBary, lead singer and guitarist, is joined by Grafton Pease on bass, Jake Brooks on drums and Chris Hersch on banjo. The four-some met in 2002, and have since toured the country regularly. They've opened for such musical luminaries as Bobby Bare, Jr., Railroad Earth, The Damnwells, and Grace Potter. They've spent the last three springs stopping by the renowned South by Southwest Festival and were asked by Paste Magazine to make an appearance at 2007's Austin City Limits. The band has also played at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and even beloved Fenway Park in Boston. This summer, Oneside will be gracing the stages of California's High Sierra Music Festival as well as Virginia's Floydfest 2008.
Oneside's debut album, First, To Last, is full of structures, lyrics, and licks that are unabashedly plucked from the traditional American canon. Songs like "Lisa" and "Got To Go" would sound perfectly at home on a Nickel Creek or Alison Krauss album. But right from "First, To Last's" foot-stomping, bluesy opening track "The Letter," which combines elements of bluegrass, rock, jazz, and even reggae, it is apparent that Oneside isn't afraid to make departures from traditional styles. Other songs would fit right in on a Sufjan Stevens or even a Radiohead album. Yet all of the songs are deftly written and produced to create a coherent, if unique and slightly irreverent, sound. Other bands may play strictly in a conventional roots style but what sets Oneside apart is their willingness to take these traditional fundamentals and place them firmly in a modern context.
For more information visit http://www.onesidemusic.com/Border Bash features live music on the third Friday of every month from May through August, showcasing musicians who will perform later this year at the 9th Annual Rhythm and Roots Reunion. "We hope that individuals, families, and visitors will come downtown to experience Bristol's unique music" commented Bill Hartley, Executive Director of the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance. Hartley added that between the youth activities, artist's exhibits, and musical fare offered that there should be something for everyone. Come downtown and do the "Caterpillar Crawl"

The Junior League of Bristol held the first Caterpillar Crawl on Saturday, May 16 - and it was a huge success! The family-friendly scavenger hunt was held downtown, and was inspired by the book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar,by Eric Carle, to aid in the Junior League's commitment to promote reading and literacy. Scavengers crawled along State Street equipped with a list of clues and a map, as they searched for 10 permanent bronze caterpillar statues created by local artist Val Lyle. The statues represent the caterpillars in The Very Hungry Caterpillar book. "We are thrilled with the turnout for this event," says Katy Sikorski, president-elect of Junior League of Bristol. "We had two objectives with this event; one was to support reading and literacy, and the other was to promote our downtown area. We know we accomplished both. Additionally, this event was a great opportunity for Junior League to get involved in the community. The Caterpillar Crawl also allows the city of Bristol to have an ongoing program for families to enjoy."
It is estimated that more than 400 people participated in the event. The Caterpillar Crawl culminated with the Caterpillar Carnival at the Bristol Public Library and featured games, balloons, snacks and a book reading of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, in honor of its 40th anniversary. There was also a clay table, where Lyle helped children sculpted their very own statues to take home with them. The Caterpillar Crawl statues are permanent fixtures in historic downtown Bristol, and families will be able to enjoy the activity year-round. To download the clues and map, visit www.jlbristol.org. For more information on the Junior League of Bristol, visit jlbristol.org.

Rhythm & Roots Reunion Announces Cans for a Cause Initiative Donations to Benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee

The ninth annual Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion, a three-day music festival held in historic downtown Bristol, Tenn./Va., is kicking off its Cans for a Cause initiative by donating a portion of online ticket proceeds to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee during the month of June.
During June, the festival will donate $5 to the food bank for each $40 weekend pass ticket that is purchased online.
"Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee is experiencing record distributions of food this year," says Rhonda Chafin, executive director of the Food Bank. "An average of 30,000 individuals visit food pantries and soup kitchens served by the Food Bank each month. Community action is needed to help meet the increased demand for food. Your help is greatly appreciated."
Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion will also collect Cans for a Cause during several local events, where volunteers will accept non-perishable food donations. Ticket-buyers who bring five cans of food will receive $5 off the weekend pass festival ticket. During these events, weekend pass tickets may also be purchased at face value, and $5 from each sale will be donated to the Food Bank.

"During tough times, many people in our community are hungry. Every dollar we donate to Second Harvest provides enough food to make four meals for hungry families and individuals. Donating a portion of our proceeds to those in need is the least we can do to give back."

Indeed, they're seeking outlets for their experience, energy, and drive that will be personally and financially rewarding, while also providing the flexibility and direction they might not have enjoyed during their previous careers. Sound a lot like owning a small business? It should. Statistics show that of the nation's 10.9 million self-employed workers, the largest category, 25 percent, is boomers aged 45 to 54. In 2006, the number of self-employed persons aged 65 and older totaled 781,000-a 19-percent increase in just six years. Some may relish the challenge of building a new business, even to the point of working as many hours as they did before retiring. Others may prefer pursuing an enterprise with more limited hours, allowing them to make the most of that long-awaited leisure time. Fortunately, there's a growing range of resources designed to help boomers pursue second careers as entrepreneurs. Coming in July!
THE WPBA ANNOUNCES ITS FIRST SATELLITE TOUR EVENT AT THE BORDERLINE BILLIARDS IN BRISTOL, TN
The Women's Professional Billiard Association is pleased to announce that Borderline Billiards, owned by WPBA Exempt Professional Janet Atwell, will play host to the WPBA's first Satellite Tour Event, July 10th - 12th, 2009. The WPBA Satellite Tour will be a series of non-televised tournaments which offers an opportunity to all players to compete against top WPBA Exempt Professionals outside of WPBA Classic Tour Events. Janet Atwell, Owner/Proprietor of Borderline Billiards, is excited to host the inaugural Tournament. "It has always been my goal to change the public's perception of billiards and have it see billiards as the classy and competitive sport that it truly is. The start to reaching that goal came when I renovated a 1929 building in historic downtown Bristol, TN and opened Borderline Billiards. Bristol is known around the country as the "Birthplace of Country Music" and the world's fastest half-mile NASCAR track. It is my hope that by hosting a WPBA Satellite Event such as this, Bristol will also be known for "billiards the way it ought to be". Borderline Billiards is adding $10,000 to the prize fund. The field will consist of 64 competitors made up of Exempt players and amateurs alike. WPBA Exempt Professionals will receive Priority Registration beginning May 11th, 2009 until May 25th, 2009. Thereafter the registration will open up to all players on a first come, first serve basis until all 64 spots are filled. The entry fee will be $150, with payouts going to 50% of the field. Featured players who have already committed to participate include Allison Fisher, Sarah Rousey, Ewa Laurance and Tiffany Nelson-Crain. Ticket information to attend the Borderline Billiards Satellite Tour Event will be available soon. Melissa Herndon, WPBA Board Secretary and top Exempt Professional, has this to say about the WPBA Satellite Tour event at Borderline Billiards, "As a WPBA Board Member, I'm thrilled to finally see the launch of the Satellite Tour program. The Satellite Tour is intended to bring the WPBA experience to areas that might not host a Classic Tour anywhere nearby...and to give the WPBA players more opportunity to compete between Classic Tour events. I think it very appropriate that our first event will be at a venue established and owned by one of our very own WPBA Exempt Pros, Janet Atwell. As a WPBA player, I'm looking forward to experiencing some of that famous Tennessee hospitality when I head to Borderline Billiards to compete. Janet Atwell is a terrific player and a great friend of mine, and I think she has done a wonderful thing by putting this incredible tournament on. About this time of year warm spring breezes begin to blow, stars are twinkling in the clear evening sky and city streets come alive with people anxious to get outside. What could be missing? Could it be the sounds of live music? Each year downtown Bristol comes alive with music filling the air in front of the mural that represents its rich heritage from which today's music emanates from. Crowds by the hundreds gather each week to share in the culture, and the music at Bristol's Downtown Center. The faces of the people tell the story of our roots in music from the very young to the very young at heart, listening and dancing under the stars to sounds of yesterday and those of today's country music.
Music this year will be hosted at the Downtown Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Bluegrass music can be heard on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays with Nostalgia of the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's being hosted on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday. Of course, the crowd pleasing country and southern rock may be heard each Thursday evening. There is no charge for the entertainment and as always food and beverages will be available on site.
