The Fabric Gallery

Becky Carmack has a personality that reflects her shop, warm and friendly!  Becky opened The Fabric Gallery in August 2007 because she felt there was a need for this type of store in the Tri-Cities, she was excited then and is still excited now to be in downtown Bristol!

The Fabric Gallery prides themselves on excellent customer service and knowledgeable sales people.  Working with over 30 fabric companies and thousands of fabric samples could be daunting to some people but not Becky " I want customers to find what they are looking for and more".  "We just help you reflect your personal style" she says.  The Fabric Gallery offers current designer fabrics for upholstery, custom window treatments, and bedding just to name a few.  In addition to custom and in-home service, they help refer customers to seamstresses with years of experience, who can create whatever home fashions you can imagine!

So, when your Spring cleaning gets you in a stink, stop by The Fabric Galleryand let them spruce you up!

Carl Clarke
Thursday, April 2nd
2 - 4pm

Abingdon humorist and columnist Carl Clarke will read from his book and autograph copies at the Bristol Public Library on April 2nd from 2-4pm. Since 1996, Clarke has written the weekly humor column, "I Made It Up", in the Washington County (VA) News. In 2002, Clarke chose 100 of his best columns and published "The Best of 'I Made It Up'."

In its review, the News called the column "wonderful" and "wacky." Review Carol Fields wrote: "He redesigns the human body, suggests better ways of bearing children, sends Southwest Virginia's deer hunters off to solve problems in Afghanistan, and has concluded that all the dead animals on the highway are due to carcinogens in the asphalt."

On April 2nd, Clarke will read some of his favorite columns, including "If You Had a Remote Control for Your Spouse," "An Affair of the Heart (Valves)," and "Things Not to Say After Your Wives Surgery." He will also talk about public reaction to some of his columns.

His humor column has won two awards from the Virginia Press Association. His early background includes editorial work for trade association magazines and a brief stint working for Dick Clark Productions. From 1982-2002, he was a program developer and director of the University of Virginia staff at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon.

We will be presenting you the Catena "Alta" wines from Argentina along with California Wines from Havens Wine Cellars. The wines will be presented by Mr. John Grimsley, Field Manager for Billington Wines, the US distributor for these jewels. There will be total 7 wines ranging in retail price from $28.95 to $54.95 along with catered Hors d'Oeuvres from the "Troutdale Bistro."

Man 1, Bank 0

Friday, April 24th
7:30 pm

Man v Bank

The Paramount Center for the Arts is pleased to present a funny and fascinating one-man show as the Season Finale!

Patrick Combs tells the amazing-but-true story of how he deposited a $95,093.35 junk-mail check marked 'non-negotiable' - hoping to spread a little banking cheer to tellers - and how it erupted into a staggering and funny David vs. Goliath-like adventure that still continues today if you count his internationally touring, award winning, off-Broadway one-man show about the incident.
What happens after the bank cashes the ridiculous check? To name only a few things: angry banking officers threatening "jail time" and "death"; the nation's leading authority on banking coming out of retirement; astonishing legal twists; and worldwide media coverage (including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Good Morning America and calls from Letterman & Leno).
The show sold out in New York during its off-Broadway run at the Lambs Theatre in the heart of Times Square. It also sold out at HBO's 2004 U.S. Comedy Arts Festival held in Aspen; sold out its six show run and garnered "Critic's Choice" at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston; sold out its 10 show run in Winnipeg where it created 3 hour ticket lines, hundreds were turned away and it garnered the "Best of Fest" award; sold out the Comedy Central Stage in Los Angeles; won "Best of Fest" at the San Francisco Fringe where it also sold out and was awarded "Best Solo Comedy"; sold out in Auckland where it was an official selection of the New Zealand International Comedy Festival; sold out in Montreal and won the Just For Laughs prize for Best Comedy.
"This guy's got STAR POWER." -- Hollywood's Variety Magazine
"One of the FUNNIEST, most FASCINATING and FASTEST moving solo plays to hit New York in many a season. Ninety minutes of NONSTOP LAUGHTER, it's also an EDGE OF YOUR SEAT ADVENTURE loaded with UNBELIEVABLE real-life surprises." -- BroadwayWorld.com

As a small business owner struggling for help?

Have you thought about asking S.C.O.R.E.?

Bristol SCORE Business Counselors are always available to work with downtown businesses to help them grow and improve their bottom line.

Services are free and confidential.
They offer individual appointments every Thursday from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM (other times can be worked out) at the Bristol Chamber of Commerce.

Change is Coming; Don't Let It Leave Your Small Business Behind

Predicting the future is one of humankind's oldest endeavors.  Nearly everything from tealeaves to caterpillars has served as a bellwether of fate.  Twenty-first Century small business owners can draw on a host of technology and information resources to chart the course of their enterprises.  But given the increasing pace and unpredictability of change, one can't help but wonder if those caterpillars might really know something.

Anticipating trends can be extremely valuable in keeping you current on everything from sales strategies and customer desires to technology tools and the general economy.  As your business grows, change will be inevitable and small business owners should constantly look ahead and seek out ways to shake things up.   The more you test the winds of change, the better your chances of success down the road.

But how can you tell the difference between a fleeting fad and a true trend?  Louis Patler, a market research guru for companies such as American Express and Dell, has spent decades tracking emerging trends and studying their impact on business.  He says the key to successfully piloting a business in the years ahead will be embracing new ways of thinking.

For example, Patler says that truisms like "stick to what your business does best" are outmoded.  If you want your business to grow, consider that past business traditions and processes might only hold you back. Trying new approaches is vital.

Not all customers are created equal.  Some are more valuable and loyal than others, and those are the ones you should lavish the most attention on with special savings and service offers.  And don't expect loyalty from employees.  As American society becomes ever more mobile and labor shortages worsen, workers won't stay on a job for more than three years.

Information is the key to success in the 21st Century, and the ability to effectively capture and analyze data on customer needs and behaviors is essential for small business owners to stay on top of and, even more important, anticipate trends related to their products of services.   After all, what's important to your current and potential customers will likely be important to you as well.

Don't rely on incomplete information to plan your small business.  Get help from the experts at SCORE "Counselors to America's Small Business." SCORE is a nonprofit organization of more than 10,500 volunteer business counselors who provide free, confidential business counseling and training workshops to small business owners.

Money raised by the Salvation Army goes back into the local community.  You're not only recycling old clothes and unused items, you're helping those in the community who may need assistance.
Winners will be selected based on pounds of clothing and household items collected, so be sure to have your donations weighed.
