February Feature Business:
Theatre Bristol

Theatre Bristol has a long upstanding tradition here in the Twin Cities. This is the Theatre's 43rd anniversary season! Founded in 1965 by Catherine DeCaterina, the Theatre teaches all ages confidence and pride, using the performing arts to inspire, educate, and entertain people of all ages.
Education is the primary focus for Theatre Bristol. Offering a Discovery Series for young adults and school groups, the Theatre incorporates Tennessee and Virginia's Standards of Learning by applying many subject areas of the cirriculum to each program. Catherine F. DeCaterina School of the Arts Summer Program, Showbiz Saturdays, and Teaching Artists In The School are several programs the Theatre offers throughout the year.
I had a chance to catch up with Emily Anne Thompson, the Executive Director for Theatre Bristol. She is excited about the upcoming season and invites anyone in the community to come audition and be part of the growing theatre family.

Calling all you DANCERS!
Friday - February 13th - 7:00 pm
Contra Dance in Historic Downtown Bristol to feature Contra Cowboys and Jesse Edgerton
The Birthplace of Country Music Alliance, Believe in Bristol's Main Street Program, and Bristol Ballet will partner to host a monthly contra dance on Friday, February 13 at 7:00 pm at the Bristol Ballet studios, located at 628 Cumberland Street (corner of Cumberland Street and Piedmont Avenue). The Contra Dance will run from 7:30 - 10:30 pm, with a dance class for newcomers held from 7:00 - 7:30pm. Admission to the dance is $7 adults, $5 students, and $15 for a family.
The band for the February dance is the Contra Cowboys, accompanied by caller Jesse Edgerton. Contra dancing is a form of American dance in which the dancers form a set of two parallel lines that run the length of the hall. In each dance, couples dance a sequence of moves that take them up or down the set. As the sequence is repeated, a couple will eventually dance with every other couple in the set and through the course of an evening, with nearly every other dancer. Many of the basic moves in contra dancing are similar to those in traditional square dancing (swings, promenades, dosādos, allemandes). A square dance set comprises only four couples whereas the number of couples in a contra dance set is limited only by the length of the hall. A caller, working with a group of live musicians, guides new and experienced dancers through a variety of dances. The caller teaches each dance before it is actually done to the music.
The Contra Cowboys (Joel Keebler, Mike Knowles, and Sid Jackson) are a brand new band on the contra dance circuit. Each member of this group has years of experience playing for dancers and listeners alike in a wide variety of musical styles and venues. Joel Keebler is featured on upright bass and melodica. He spent earlier days in Knoxville, where he performed with Robinella and in the group The Stringbeans. He currentlyresides in Mendota, Virginia and teaches horticulture at Virginia Highlands Community College in Abingdon. Mike Knowles of Johnson City is featured on guitar, mandolin, and the occasional vocal. Currently performing with the New Orleans rhythm and blues outfit the Mudbugs on piano and vocal, Mike also has been employed as member of a 10 piece band on a cruise ship. Several other bands have included his guitar and vocals, including Matrix, the Groovemasters, and the Normaltones. Sid Jackson rounds out the trio with his excellent banjo picking. Sid makes his home in Piney Flats and makes dance hall appearances with the Ransom McCoy Band. He also has many years and genres of musical experience including Rock and Roll in the fifties, folk music in the sixties and bluegrass in the seventies and eighties. Sid also performed with the Rainbow Valley Boys, the Cherokee Mountain boys, and Snake and the Grass. Along the way he found some time to play Dixieland, hot jazz, and teach mathematics.
Calling the dance will be Jesse Edgerton. Currently residing in Boone, he is a graduate of Warren Wilson College. He started his contra dancing career at the Old Farmer's Ball at Warren Wilson and the Grey Eagle in Asheville and started calling at open mics at the Old Farmer's Ball around 2002. The Birthplace of Country Music Alliance is a nonprofit organization dedicated to telling the story of the living musical heritage of the Appalachian Mountains and the cultural traditions that sustain it.
The Birthplace of Country Music Alliance and Bristol Ballet are funded in part by grants from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the Tennessee Arts Commission. For more information, call (276) 6450111 or visit online at www.birthplaceofcountrymusic.org |

Stateline Jamboree returns!
Linda Lay & Springfield Exit
Friday, February 20th
7:00 pm
Bristol Public Library
Bristol's Rhythm and Roots Reunion, the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance, and the Bristol Public Library will present Linda Lay & Springfield Exit as part of the Stateline Jamboree Concert Series on Friday, February 20, 2009 at 7:00 PM at the Bristol Public Library. Tickets for the show are $10, $8 for students/seniors, and will be available at the door. Enter at meeting room entrance, north side, upper level. "We are very excited to be able to offer this concert series to the public again this year," noted Bill Hartley, Executive Director, Birthplace of Country Music Alliance. These concerts allow both the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance and Bristol's Rhythm and Roots Reunion to offer music on a regular basis in historic downtown Bristol while showcasing performers that have or will perform at the annual Rhythm and Roots Reunion festival. Hartley also commented that the artists for this year's concert series not only represent a variety of styles but all have a personal connection to Bristol and the Tri-Cities. After putting their stamp on several of Cracker Barrel's Old Country StoreŽ Heritage Series CDs in early 2002, Linda and David Lay, along with David McLaughlin, decided to perform some shows together. Their unique sound is entirely their own, with influences of bluegrass, country, folk and traditional folk. In concerts at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and at the Lowell Massachusetts Folk Festival, they received standing ovations and rave reviews. With these auspicious results, they have continued performing together. The folks at Cracker Barrel Country StoreŽ encouraged David, Linda, and David to meld their talents in creating a new Cracker Barrel Country StoreŽ CD for their Heritage Series. With songs chosen for their special and very personal meaning to David, Linda and David, the 2003 CD comes straight from the heart - and for the heart. LINDA LAY is no stranger to the world of music. For over twenty years she has been known as one of the finest singers in just about every type of music from jazz and swing to country and bluegrass. During the past year she performed overseas and from the Pacific to the Atlantic coast. Linda grew up in a very musical family in Bristol, Virginia, and as a child, she traveled with her family band singing and playing guitar and bass. Her popular country CD release by Cracker Barrel Old Country StoreŽ, "Miss Linda's Mercantile Store", is getting lots of air play and selling out at every store around the country. She is now the main vocalist and bass player with Springfield Exit. DAVID LAY is a respected vocalist and rhythm guitar player in the folk, country, and bluegrass world. According to David McLaughlin, David is "one of the most solid rhythm guitarists I have ever played with." David comes from east Tennessee but has traveled extensively around America and internationally and is admired for his fine delivery of folk and country songs. With wife, Linda, David has been a guitarist on several music tours, including the Masters of the Steel String Guitar. David is the rhythm guitarist and harmony vocalist with Springfield Exit. DAVID MCLAUGHLIN has been a full-time musician since 1978 and was a founding member of the well-known '80s & '90s bluegrass group, The Johnson Mountain Boys. With that group, he was twice nominated for a Grammy Award. David has toured the world, performing at the Grand Ole Opry, the White House, and also at Carnegie Hall. He was also one half of the popular country-folk duo, Crowe & McLaughlin in the mid 1990s, performing on the Grand Ole Opry and TNN. He plays several instruments with the trio and sings harmony. For more information on the group visit their website at www.springfieldexit.com The Birthplace of Country Music Alliance is a non-profit organization dedicated to telling the story of the living musical heritage of the Appalachian mountains and the cultural traditions that sustain it. Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion is an annual music festival held in September to promote and celebrate our musical heritage. Bristol History 101
African-American Influence on the Birthplace of Country Music
Provided by Birthplace of Country Music Alliance
The plucked banjo string . . . The field holler . . . The gospel spiritual . . .
Each of these traditions is an element of what has made country music. Each is rooted in the African American experience, in the southern Appalachian Mountains and through the South. The migration of the music and the influence on the musical traditions are so fundamental that what we know as country music would not be possible without the African American contribution.

As a small business owner are you struggling for help?
Have you thought about asking S.C.O.R.E.?
Bristol SCORE Business Counselors are always available to work with downtown businesses to help them grow and improve their bottom line.
Services are free and confidential.
They offer individual appointments every Thursday from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM (other times can be worked out) at the Bristol Chamber of Commerce.
To schedule an appointment, please call (423) 989-4866 and leave a message. A counselor will follow-up and make the arrangements.
How can S.C.O.R.E. help?
When It Comes to Customer Service, Small is Beautiful Size isn't everything, especially for providing value to customers. This important fact can help distinguish small "mom and pop" businesses from big box chain stores. It gives them a powerful competitive advantage in an age when more consumers crave and expect a high level of service and responsiveness. Your position at the "front lines" of your business gives you direct access to your customers' needs, attitudes, and opinions. You know the kinds of products or services they want, when they want them, and how best to deliver them. To gain these valuable insights, you need to proactively assess what you do and should be doing to keep customers coming back, rather than tempting them to try the "big store" down the street. Start by putting yourself in your customers' place. How would you like to be treated if you were a first-time customer or a "regular?" Also consider conveniences. What can you do to make it easier to find items and check out, rather than having to navigate a big-box store's aisles and cashier lines? Also visit other stores and service centers, including those unrelated to your business. See what they do that you find appealing, and adapt those practices to enhance your business's customer experience. Similarly, watch for aspects you don't like, but be sure to understand the reasons behind problems or poor service, such as understaffing and limited inventory. This will help prevent similar problems from arising in your business. How you connect with customers by phone or email will also help differentiate your small business from the sometimes bureaucratic nature of big-box chains. Answer calls promptly and with a friendly greeting. Avoid putting callers on hold for longer than a minute; take a message and respond as soon as possible. If you use an automated answering system, your customer service line should be one of the first options. Although it may be impractical to handle email inquiries as they arrive, don't let them sit for too long. Some email systems automatically generate a response to acknowledge the message. Make sure the text is upbeat and friendly-again, the kind of message you'd want to receive. A promise to respond within 24 hours may not be enough. Designate certain times during the day to handle email queries, or assign the responsibility to an employee. The best tactic for gaining a competitive edge is to contact SCORE "Counselors to America's Small Business." SCORE is a nonprofit organization of more than 10,500 volunteer business counselors who provide free, confidential business counseling and training workshops to small business owners. Call 1-800/634-0245 for the SCORE chapter nearest you, or find a counselor online at www.score.org

Appalachian Ghost Walks
We have some exciting news!!! We are now officially offering birthday party arrangements with two live entertainment options. Option one involves a costumed ghost who appears at the party to tell the children REAL history and TRUE ghost stories which are very child friendly. Option two includes a more scientific yet still positive and child appropriate look at the afterlife with a 45 minute to hour long "Ghostology 101 - Introduction" presentation. With this second option, the children learn more about the things they see on the Sci-Fi Channel's "Ghost Hunters" program, but are also witness to a fantastic dowsing demonstration and get to safely try out the dowsing rods for themselves. Why we even do the catering and bring the ghost themed cake, party bags, and cup cakes!!! Now every child on your list of birthdays throughout the rolling year can have a memorable, SPOOK-tacular experience on their special day. You can even "Book Online" for birthday parties as well as our nightly lantern-led walking tours in 2009! You're invited to come and see everything that's new on our site at http://www.AppalachianGhostWalks.com - and we hope to see you and your family and/or companions out there enjoying one or more of our many lantern-lit Ghost and History Tours throughout the Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia Appalachian Mountain region this year. |
