A Christmas Carol

Friday, December 5th and
Sunday, December 7th

 A Christmas Carol

Highlands Ballet
and Bristol Ballet are collaborating
to present a special holiday experience that will remind you, with laughter and tears, that the true Christmas Spirit comes from giving with love.

The ballet companies are presenting A Christmas Carol, a spectacular ballet version of the heartwarming story by Charles Dickens. All ages will love this magical production of dance, theater, and music all wrapped into one glorious Christmas package. A Highlands Ballet original, now presented in its second year of collaboration with Bristol Ballet, brings to life this wonderful old tale of redemption and love.

Gala Reception "Under the Mistletoe"

Join the dancers, actors and singers for Under the Mistletoe, a gala reception where you can lift a glass of cheer to celebrate goodwill toward all mankind. The reception will begin at 6 p.m. preceding the Friday night performance. Enjoy wassail and gourmet treats provided by the Troutdale Dining Room, and relax to the vocal stylings of Lindsay Blackwell as a prelude to the ballet.

Reception tickets are $20.. To reserve, call 276-623-0822 or 276-669-6051.

Performances of A Christmas Carol

Local dancers from both companies will perform, along with featured guest artists: Sean Hilton of Chicago, Jeffrey Polston of Boston, and Charles Haack of New York City, who stars as Scrooge. Area vocalists will also perform with the cast.

A Christmas Carol, first published in 1843, has not been out of print since that time. It brings to the holiday season a beloved group of fictional characters - Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim, the ghost of Jacob Marley, Bob Cratchit, and the visions of Christmas Past, Present, and Future - who are as familiar to us as the Christmas tree and Santa Claus. Dickens himself read his heartwarming tale publicly on Christmas Eve. His tale evokes both the gloom and disappointment of those who lack the Christmas Spirit and the joy of those who raise a wassail cup in goodwill toward mankind.

Performances will be presented at the Paramount Center for the Arts in Bristol, Tenn., on Friday, Dec. 5 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $15 ($6 for children). For tickets, call 423-274-8920 or visit www.theparamountcenter.com/tickets.html

  Theatre Bristol presents;

Do You Hear What I Hear: A Collection of Holiday Stories

December 11th - 13th

Theatre Bristol's Art Space

This December, Theatre Bristol will present an original holiday tale that is sure to warm any heart.

Written and directed by local artist and actor Jonathan Luttrell, Do You Hear What I Hear: A Collection of Holiday Stories centers on an original story around popular and traditional holiday songs to provide a personal and emotional look at how a group of friends and family members experience the holidays.

We find a young army lieutenant from North Carolina recording a greeting from Iraq for his family back at home. Being so far away at Christmas isn't easy for him, but it's even harder for his new wife who waits by the phone for his calls. We also learn about one of the soldier's friends who works as an elf for the mall Santa. Down the hall is the department store worker at the perfume counter who can't imagine spending Christmas without snow, like the Florida radio DJ who longs for the white Christmases of his past. We later meet the soldier's family at home.

The outer appearances are that of a slightly dysfunctional country Christmas, but it soon becomes clear that the true spirit of the holidays can bring us all together to remember the real reason for the season. Don't miss this instant classic that will tug at your heart strings and have you singing along with all of your favorite Christmas songs!

This production showcases a cast of eight Theatre Bristol veterans who bring the characters to life. They are Sierra Allen, Brant Colvin, Kaitlin Dodi, Lori Gates-Addison, Michael-Thomas Griffith, Jonathan Luttrell, Elizabeth Paxton, and Nick Spencer.

Performance dates are Dec. 11, 12 and 13 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 14 at 2:30 p.m. at Theatre Bristol's ARTspace.

Seating is limited so reservations are encouraged. Please call (423) 968-4977.

This is the classic tale of Clara and the enchanted Nutcracker she receives from her Godfather at Christmas. The Nutcracker comes to life on Christmas Eve and transports Clara to the land of sweets where they embark on wonderful adventures. See candy canes dance and watch snowflakes and flowers waltz as this beautiful story unfolds.

Birthplace of Country Music Alliance

Recently, Food City presented a check for more than $26,000 to the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance.  This amount represented the proceeds from the annual downtown Food City Family Race Night event.  "We appreciate the generosity, not just to us but to downtown," Executive Director Bill Hartley said. "This is a lot of money to reinvest back into downtown Bristol."
This year's annual NASCAR fan festival featured the largest attendance in event history and their second-largest contribution, said Tom Hembree, Food City senior vice president of marketing.   "This was the right thing to do for the community," Hembree said. "This project will really help Bristol. There won't be anything else like it."
Fundraising Chairman Kevin Triplett said. "This is a very nice contribution that shows we have the local community supporting our project."

Bristol History 101

While many are familiar with Ralph Peer's historical 1927 recording sessions held in Bristol, few are familiar with his return to the twin-city in 1928.  Following his successful field recordings in Bristol in 1927, which included future Country Music Hall of Fame members Ernest Stoneman, the Carter Family, and Jimmie Rodgers, Peer returned in October, 1928 to conduct another recording session. For nine days, from Oct. 27 through Nov. 3, Peer set up in a building about a block west from the original recording site, on the second floor of a bank building at the corner of the alley which now runs beside the Paramount Center for the Arts. Peer scheduled several acts from the previous year, including Stoneman, Karnes, A.L. Phipps, and members of the West Virginia Coon Hunters. He also included new artists, including the Piedmont Blues duo of Stephen Tarter and Harry Gay, James Howard and Charles Peak -"The Blind Musicians," Clarence Greene, the Stamps Quartet, the Carolina Twins, the Smith Brothers, the Palmer Sisters, and George 'Shortbuckle' Roark and Family.  In all, Peer recorded 64 songs, 46 of which were released, by 18 different artists.
