November Feature Business:
Something Smells Good!
If you were to ask Jenny Wallace what she does, she would say that she makes "all natural Aromatherapy products for people & dogs." So I asked Jenny what does "all natural Aromatherapy" really mean? Her answer is simple, "using 100% Pure & Therapeutic Essential Oils and no synthetic ingredients." Funny, but Jenny's best seller is not for herself, it's for her dog Scout. Scout suffered from severe skin allergies and Jenny could not find anything to help him, until she discovered Aromatherapy. Scout's problems cleared up and now her Dirty Dog Skin Soothing Spray has been featured nationally in Pet Product News and Pet Style News for relieving dog's skin and allergy problems. Also available in the dog line are Soothing Ear Drops, Canine Calming Spray and Flea Free Spray. Something Smells Good has lots of other unique gift ideas including Lavender wraps, eye masks, bath salts and gift baskets. My favorite product is the household disinfectants; Jenny says "they make cleaning almost enjoyable!" Lime & Ginger, Cinnamon & Lemon and Peppermint & Rosemary just to name a few. Jenny does custom blends so you can create your own unique scent. She can blend it into hand lotion, body spray, soap, whatever you want! So come visit Jenny and get amazing results with Aromatherapy...Naturally!
Something Smells Good! Aromatherapy Bar is located at 511 State Street, inside Fandango.

Sullivan County Preservation
Topic of Meeting for Bristol Historical Association
Bristol Public Library, 6:30 p.m.
Shelia Hunt Steele is slated to speak at the November meeting of the Bristol Historical Association. Hunt is the director of the Sullivan County Department of Archives and Tourism and has been instrumental in preservation efforts throughout the region. She has dramatically influenced work in Sullivan County. To her credit is her work with preservation of county government records and the regional research center for history & genealogy in Blountville. Steele will speak to the association on the topic "Historical Preservation in Sullivan County" Monday November 10th at the Bristol Public Library on Goode Street in Bristol. The meeting will begin at 6:30pm.
The Sullivan County Department of Archives and History officially opened in May 2004. Nine years in the making, the archives came to fruition as a direct result of the efforts of the Sullivan County Public Records Commission with the support of the Tennessee State Library and Archives. Volunteers are still working to preserve the records, and much progress has been made toward this massive undertaking. The Archives is also set up to comply with Tennessee Code Annotated. Tennessee has an open public records law, which applies to county and municipal records as well as to state records. The archives have set goals to safeguard the heritage of Sullivan County by preserving a record of its culture and architecture, by supporting preservation efforts, by promoting its historical sites, and by encouraging preservation throughout the county. The archives, through the coordination of Shelia Hunt Steele, have been making inroads in this very short period of time. The public is cordially invited to this free presentation. For further details on this upcoming event contact program chairman Tim Buchanan, 276-669-3885. You can visit www.bristolhistoricalassociation.com to find out about the extensive work of the association preserving & promoting the region's heritage. With three historic properties in the city, the Bristol Historical Association is working toward a museum in the historic E.W. King House and continued restoration and maintenance of the Tennessee Ernie Ford birthplace. Current efforts also are securing a permanent site for the eighteenth century Robert Preston House, located on Lee Highway near Exit 7. The association invites any individuals to join us in their efforts. Mary Beth Rainero currently serves as the president of the Bristol Historical Association.

Contra Dancing!
Friday, November 14 - 7pm
Contra Dance in Historic Downtown Bristol to feature Contra Cowboys & Jesse Edgerton The Birthplace of Country Music Alliance, Believe in Bristol's Main Street Program, and Bristol Ballet will partner to host a monthly contra dance on Friday, November 14 at 7:00 pm at the Bristol Ballet studios, located at 628 Cumberland Street (corner of Cumberland Street and Piedmont Avenue). The contra dance will run from 7:30-10:30 pm, with a dance class for newcomers held from 7:00-7:30pm. Admission to the dance is $7 adults, $5 students, and $15 for a family. The band for the November 14 dance is the Contra Cowboys, accompanied by caller Jesse Edgerton. Contra dancing is a form of American dance in which the dancers form a set of two parallel lines that run the length of the hall. In each dance, couples dance a sequence of moves that take them up or down the set. As the sequence is repeated, a couple will eventually dance with every other couple in the set and through the course of an evening, with nearly every other dancer. Many of the basic moves in contra dancing are similar to those in traditional square dancing (swings, promenades, dos-à-dos, allemandes). A square dance set comprises only four couples whereas the number of couples in a contra dance set is limited only by the length of the hall. A caller, working with a group of live musicians, guides new and experienced dancers through a variety of dances. The caller teaches each dance before it is actually done to the music. The Contra Cowboys (Joel Keebler, Mike Knowles, and Sid Jackson) are a brand new band on the contra dance circuit. Each member of this group has years of experience playing for dancers and listeners alike in a wide variety of musical styles and venues. Joel Keebler is featured on upright bass and melodica. He spent earlier days in Knoxville, where he performed with Robinella and in the group The Stringbeans. He currently resides in Mendota, Virginia and teaches horticulture at Virginia Highlands Community College in Abingdon. Mike Knowles of Johnson City is featured on guitar, mandolin, and the occasional vocal. Currently performing with the New Orleans rhythm and blues outfit the Mudbugs on piano and vocal, Mike also has been employed as member of a 10 piece band on a cruise ship. Several other bands have included his guitar and vocals, including Matrix, the Groovemasters, and the Normaltones. Sid Jackson rounds out the trio with his excellent banjo picking. Sid makes his home in Piney Flats and makes dance hall appearances with the Ransom McCoy Band. He also has many years and genres of musical experience including Rock and Roll in the fifties, folk music in the sixties and bluegrass in the seventies and eighties. Sid also performed with the Rainbow Valley Boys, the Cherokee Mountain boys, and Snake and the Grass. Along the way he found some time to play Dixieland, hot jazz, and teach mathematics. Calling for the dance will be Jesse Edgerton. Currently residing in Boone, he is a graduate of Warren Wilson College. He started his contra dancing career at the Old Farmer's Ball at Warren Wilson and the Grey Eagle in Asheville and started calling at open mics at the Old Farmer's Ball around 2002. The Birthplace of Country Music Alliance is a nonprofit organization dedicated to telling the story of the living musical heritage of the Appalachian mountains and the cultural traditions that sustain it. The Birthplace of Country Music Alliance and Bristol Ballet are funded in part by grants from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the Tennessee Arts Commission.

Pumpkin Palooza was a blast!
Fun was had by all who attended the annual event! We estimate that 250 kids braved the weather to decorate pumpkins, participate in the Halloween Costume contest and afterwards merchants along State Street handed out trick-or-treat candy. Special thanks go out to Bristol Grocery Co. and Nicholle Goodnight Photography who sponsored a theme photo for a canned good or cash donation to benefit the Bristol Emergency Food Pantry. The good news is that not only did the children have a great time but over 150 cans of food, 23 dry good items and $56 were donated! Great Job Bristol!

Thank you Bristol Tennessee for sponsoring this fun event!

Bristol History 101
As Bristol grew in the early 1900's, plans were made for a community park. In 1950, work began on Cumberland Square Park which sits where the original founders of Bristol planned for it to be, as early as 1856. Today the park serves as a memorial to those that paid the ultimate price for freedom. The memorial honors those soldiers who lost their lives in times of war. The eternal flame reminds visitors of the ongoing sacrifices of our soldiers.
Thank You Veterans! |

E.W. King Window Displayed at Bristol Library The Bristol Historical Association is pleased to announce that the installation of the E.W. King House Stained Glass Window at the Bristol Public Library was completed last week! A framed informational document describing the window and the project will be added to adjacent wall space next week. The display is located on the second floor of the Library in the art gallery hallway, an appropriate location since the window IS art and this area's lighting brings out the window'scolorsperfectly.
Many thanks to Judd Barry of the Bristol Public Library for his enthusiasm and willingness to accommodate the window. The library is the ideal place for the public to view, appreciate, and enjoy the beauty of the window while simultaneously learning about or being reminded of the E.W. King House project. Here also the window will be safe and protected while "away from home"! Many thanks also to Herb Reach for donating his time, materials, and talent to construct the massive sturdy custom frame to house the window, a big jobindeed!
So, next time you are at the Library be sure and go upstairs to view the EW King House Stained Glass Window!
