Livable Communities Exhibit & Lunch Series hosted by Believe in Bristol
October 8th - Lunch Series at Bristol Public Library Meeting Room - Noon
An exhibit entitled "Livable Communities for Virginia" will be on display at the Bristol Public Library through October 31, 2008. The exhibit is sponsored locally by Believe in Bristol. What makes a community livable? There is no single answer to that question. In a country as large and diverse as the United States, livability is best defined at the local level. Broadly speaking, a livable community recognizes its own unique identity and places a high value on the planning processes that help manage growth and change to maintain and enhance its community character.
In recognition of the 150th anniversary of the American Institute of Architects, this exhibition offers a summary of the issues the AIA has identified as the 10 Principles for Livable Communities. The exhibition and its related educational programs are intended to help ordinary citizens, public officials, and others who are actively engaged in civic dialogue to understand the basic elements of community design. It is a starting point leverage existing tools, strategies, and synergies at the policy, planning and design levels so that our communities can reach their full potential. Through a series of vibrant photographic images and text panels, the exhibit illustrates principles such as "Design on a Human Scale," "Preserve Urban Centers," "Protect Environmental Resources," and "Design Matters." Web-based teacher resource materials for grades 4 through 6 have been developed around the exhibit. These materials help teachers make the content of the Livable Communities exhibit understandable and meaningful for students, and give teachers SOL-correlated lessons that expand and reinforce the concepts behind the 10 Principles for Livable Communities. Abingdon architect Peyton Boyd, AIA, chair of the Believe in Bristol design committee, was guest curator for the exhibit at the Virginia Center for Architecture in Richmond.
Please join us for a lunch series at noon on October 8th, large meeting room at The Bristol Public Library, with guest speaker TK Davis, FAIA. TK Davis is Associate Professor University of Tennessee School of Architecture and will be speaking on the importance of these 10 Principles to Livable Communities. The lunch series is free but please call 423-573-2200 to reserve a lunch for $8.00. |

Contra Dancing!
Friday, October 10th - 7pm
Contra Dance in Historic Downtown Bristol to feature Lew Gelfond & Laurie Fisher and
Hank Morris!
The Birthplace of Country Music Alliance, Believe in Bristol's Main Street Program, and Bristol Ballet will partner to host a monthly contra dance on Friday, October 10 at 7:00 pm at the Bristol Ballet studios, located at 628 Cumberland Street (corner of Cumberland Street and Piedmont Avenue). The contra dance will run from 7:30 - 10:30 pm, with a dance class for newcomers held from 7:00- 7:30pm. Admission to the dance is $7 adults, $5 students, and $15 for a family. The band for the October 10 dance is Lew Gelfond & Laurie Fisher, accompanied by caller Hank Morris.
Contra dancing is a form of American dance in which the dancers form a set of twoparallel lines that run the length of the hall. In each dance, couples dance a sequence of moves that take them up or down the set. As the sequence is repeated, a couple will eventually dance with every other couple in the set and through the course of an evening, with nearly every other dancer. Many of the basic moves in contra dancing are similar to those in traditional square dancing (swings, promenades, dosądos, allemandes). A square dance set comprises only four couples whereas the number of couples in a contra dance set is limited only by the length of the hall. A caller, working with a group of live musicians, guides new and experienced dancers through a variety of dances. The caller teaches each dance before it is actually done to the music. The musicians for the dance will be Lew Gelfond and Laurie Fisher. Lew Gelfond's music is rooted in American traditions. He plays swing, oldtime, bluegrass, Irish and Scottish, country, jazz, Cajun, ragtime, Scandinavian, classical, and gypsy music. Lew plays mandolin, tenor banjo, guitar, bodran and old time banjo. Multitalented Laurie Fisher has been entertaining dancers and inspiring musicians fulltime for the past 17 years. She plays fiddle and piano, calls dances, and teaches music, mostly fiddle, piano and guitar, plus the occasional claw hammer banjo, voice, pennywhistle or bodhran to students, primarily at the Acoustic Corner in Black Mountain, NC. Calling for the dance will be Hank Morris. From Black Mountain, Hank has been an active part of the Asheville and Charlotte dance communities for over twenty-three years. Morris grew up in Alabama, graduated from Auburn University, and has been calling dance for over fifteen years.
The Birthplace of Country Music Alliance is a nonprofit organization dedicated to telling the story of the living musical heritage of the Appalachian mountains and the cultural traditions that sustain it. The Birthplace of Country Music Alliance and Bristol Ballet are funded in part by grants from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the Tennessee Arts Commission.

Local Author Introduces Sullivan County Pictorial History To Association
Monday, October 13th
6:30 pm
Joe Tennis doesn't let grass grow around his feet. Working for the Bristol Herald Courier he has become well known for his hometown & regional columns that have endeared him to the community. His curiosity in what makes the southern experience has resulted in a number of well received books, The Marble and Other Ghost Tales of Virginia and Tennessee and Beach to Bluegrass: Places To Brake On Virginia's Longest Road. Hot off the press in October, Tennis will introduce his newest book Arcadia, Images of America Series, "Sullivan County, Tennessee". He will present a program to the Bristol Historical Association on Monday, October 13, 2008 at the United Way Building at 315 8th Street, at 6:30pm. Tennis reflected that "Sullivan County" fits alongside his first book, 2004's Southwest Virginia Crossroads: An Almanac of Place Names and Places to See. "You can't tell the story of Sullivan County without Southwest Virginia" Tennis said. That story in captioned photographs ranges from century-old churches to Johnny Wood fishing on South Holston Lake. The photo cover shows a rare 1940s postcard of Bluff City at a dam that was demolished in order to build Boone Lake. This new release tours Blountville, Bristol, Bluff City, Piney Flats and Kingsport and also delves into the history of the county's three large lakes built in the 1940s and 1950s by the Tennessee Valley Authority. This book will show that Sullivan County Tennessee "is an extremely diverse land - much more than people realize". From glimpses into the Lost State of Franklin and Bristol's birthplace of county music, this new venture also identifies his knowledge of the Mountain Empire. Photographs range from the 1880's to 2008. This presentation is free and open to the public. For further details on this upcoming event contact program chairman Tim Buchanan, 276-669-3885.
You can visit www.bristolhistoricalassociation.com to find out about the extensive work of the association preserving & promoting the region's heritage. With three historic properties in the city, the Bristol Historical Association is working toward a regional museum in the historic E.W. King House and restoration and maintenance of the Tennessee Ernie Ford birthplace. Current efforts also are securing a permanent site for the eighteenth century Robert Preston House, located on Lee Highway near Exit 7. Mary Beth Rainero currently serves as the president of the Bristol Historical Association.

Bristol History 101
Did you know that the Bristol sign is one of the most unique landmarks in the south? In 1910, the famous sign that divided Tennessee and Virginia was built. Five years later it was placed in its current location. In 1921, the phrase "A Good Place to Live" was added. The historic sign was officially recognized on the national Register of Historic Places in 1988. It is one of only 33 signs in the nation to hold such a distinction and is also one of the oldest. |

Bristol - VA Update
Solar Hill project, waiting for VDOT's review of the actual bid process and minutes of that meeting and will be ready to begin as soon as we get the go-ahead from them, which could come any day now. The City Manager decided to add the remaining costs of the project to the City's budget (~$30,100) which will supply the funds needed to complete the entire project. Gladly, we will not have to apply for any new VDOT funds to finish Solar Hill. The City will be applying for additional VDOT funds (we already received part of the $$) to replace streetlights, signposts and signs to match the TN side of State Street. The application will go in the first of November and we won't know for sure until late Spring '09, but we're hopeful. We are also in the process of bidding out a Pedestrian Safety Improvements grant (bids due 10-01) which will add pedestrian crossing lights and enhanced street crossings, at Commonwealth and State, and Commonwealth and Euclid, and Cumberland at MLK, and sidewalks on Linden Drive. If there's enough money left we will add pedestrian lights and enhanced crossings on Piedmont and Goode Streets as well. The actual extent of the project will be known when the bids come in. |
