Trinity Valley Health Care Summit
 
Volunteers are needed for to speak to students at he Trinity Valley K-12 Coed College Preparatory School  on, March 23, 2012, about the health care system, insurance, and the health care reform.
 
The purpose of the TVS Healthcare Summit is to inform the students of our school on the various aspects of the healthcare system.  we would also like to present to the upperclassmen the problems or cons of the current system and various solutions that could fix these problems.

Volunteer Opportunity!!
The American Heart Association and the Hispanic Outreach Task Force are hosting their Vestido Rojo event, on Saturday, March 31, 2012, from 8:00am to 1:30pm at Tarrant County  College Trinity River Campus.
 
The event is designed to promote good health and prevention of cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, and obesity that endanger our Hispanic/Latino women. 
 
The event will offer free health screenings, educational presentation on reducing the risk associated with heart disease and stroke, cooking demonstrations, physical activity demonstrations, and much more information and resources on women's health.

NHMA 16th Annual Conference
 The National Hispanic Medical Association is having their 16th Annual Conference in Washington D.C. on April 26-29, 2012.
 
The theme for this year's conference is "Innovations that Improve the Health of Hispanics, Families & Communities".

The School of Public Health Office of Student and Academic Services (EAD 716) is providing FREE pizza to all SPH students who have completed the student satisfaction survey or who complete it next week during the designated times: Monday, March 19, 2012 from 11-12 and 3-4 and Tuesday, March 20, 2012 from 11-12

 

Students will also be entered into random drawings for Target gift cards. 

 

Some changes made as a result of last year's survey include:

- Added over 50 new institutional scholarships for 2012-2013 academic year

- Redesigned the fitness facility for improved utilization

- Added staff to the Career Services Office

- Replaced windows in EAD to better regulate classroom temperatures

2012 UNTHSC Commencement Ceremony

The commencement speaker is Dr. Harvey Fineberg who is President of the Institute of Medicine in Washington, D.C. He served as Provost of Harvard University from 1997 to 2001, following thirteen years as Dean of the Harvard School of Public Health. He has devoted most of his academic career to the fields of health policy and medical decision making. His past research has focused on the process of policy development and implementation, assessment of medical technology, evaluation and use of vaccines, and dissemination of medical innovations.

 

Dr. Fineberg helped found and served as president of the Society for Medical Decision Making and also serves as consultant to the World Health Organization. At the Institute of Medicine, he has chaired and served on a number of panels dealing with health policy issues, ranging from AIDS to new medical technology. He also served as a member of the Public Health Council of Massachusetts (1976-1979), as chairman of the Health Care Technology Study Section of the National Center for Health Services Research (1982-1985), and as president of the Association of Schools of Public Health (1995-1996).

 

Dr. Fineberg is co-author of the books Clinical Decision Analysis, Innovators in Physician Education, and the Swine Flu Affair, an analysis of the controversial federal immunization program against swine flu in 1976. He has co-edited several books on such diverse topics as AIDS prevention, vaccine safety, and understanding risk in society. He has authored numerous articles published in professional journals. Dr. Fineberg is the recipient of several honorary degrees and the Joseph W. Mountin Prize from the US Centers for Disease Control. He earned his bachelor's and doctoral degrees from Harvard University.

For the Semester 
School of Public Health Welcomes Chelsea Derry!!!

The SPH Office of Student and Academic Services is pleased to welcome Chelsea Derry to the team.  Chelsea is the new Coordinator of Academic Services in the Office of Student and Academic Services.  Chelsea's primary responsibility is to help coordinate the Public Health Practice Experience. Additionally, Chelsea will work with current student programs and academic services such as Tuesday Interludes, Delta Omega, and Journal Club as well as most other students service functions. Chelsea is located in EAD 716. Her phone number is 817-735-0479 and email: chelsea.derry@unthsc.edu.

 

Chelsea comes to us from the University of Texas Arlington where she was a Graduation Counselor. She earned a Masters of Education in Higher Education, Student Affairs from the University of North Texas, and an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Baylor University. Chelsea and her husband, Donovan, reside in Fort Worth.

Chi Burmese Refugee Health Fair

Please join the Refugee Health Fair as they collect food donations for the Chin Burmese refugee population.

 

A week long food drive will take place from Monday, March 19, 2012  to Friday, March 23, 2012.  There will be labeled containers in EAD 716 (OSAS) to drop-off your donations.  

 

In order to minimize duplication, items have been categorized by department and concentration (students, faculty, and staff).  Please bag all donations.

TPHA Conference 

Are You Planning to Attend the Texas Public Health Association Conference?

 
The Texas Public Health Association holding its annual professional educational conference in Arlington, Texas. This conference, scheduled March 21-23, 2012, is titled: "Pitching Public Health: A Home Run for All"

UNTHSC School of Public Health students who are currently enrolled in the Spring 2012 semester can receive up to a $100 reimbursement, for a three-day registration and up to $50 for a one-day registration. Students who register, attend, and perform a volunteer role at the conference can receive up to a $125 reimbursement.
 
Students can review the program and register themselves directly at http://www.texaspha.org/ . To receive the reimbursement, students must complete the application process through PHSA on OrgSync (on the PHSA feed). The deadline to submit applications to PHSA is March 16, 2012.  Once approved, students must submit their paid registration form to Diana Crenshaw in the Office of Student and Academic Services, no later than March 31 at 5:00 p.m. Reimbursements will not be issued until the conference is over.
 
A shuttle bus to the conference will also be provided for those who do not have transportation. A sign-up sheet can be found in the Office of Student and Academic Services, EAD 716 on a first-come, first-served basis.  
SPH North Texas Health Forum 

 

Each April, the School of Public Health sponsors the North Texas Health Forum. This year's event will be held on, Thursday, April 19, 2012, in the MET builsing and is co-sponsored with Tarrant County Challenge, Inc.  This is a free and open event.

 

This year's forum entitled "Addressing Community Alcohol Abuse Problems Through a Public Health Lens" will be focusing on the problem of alcohol-related injury.

Research Appreciation Day- RAD

Research Appreciation Day (RAD) is Friday, April 13, 2012!!  RAD is "an institutional tradition encompassing medicine, public health and basic science. The program provides an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to share their research efforts with the campus community and the public. The program encourages the development of joint research projects and increases the community's awareness of the outstanding quality and range of research conducted at UNT Health Science Center." 

 

This year's RAD keynote speaker is Dr. Elizabeth J. Protas, PT, PhD, FACSM, FAPTA.  Dr. Protas is the current Dean of the School of Health Professions, the George T. Bryan Distinguished Professor, and a Senior Fellow of the Sealy Center on Aging. Her research and clinical interests focus on exercise, aging and physiological responses to exercise of individuals with chronic disabilities, particularly individuals who have had a stroke or Parkinson's disease.  For more information about Dr. Protas and her research please visit the RAD website

 

RAD poster and oral presentation competitions for students, postdoctoral fellows and residents are a featured event of the day's program.  Panels of judges will select the top poster and oral presentations in a wide variety of categories. 
 
Student volunteers (not presenting at RAD) are needed to help SPH facilitate this event.  Volunteers will be needed all day and professional dress is required.  If you are interested please contact Misty Smethers at misty.smethers@unthsc.edu.

2012 Annual Research Meeting Scholarships

Academy Health is offering 29 scholarships for master's/doctoral students and fellows to attend the 2012 Annual Research Meeting (ARM), June 24-26 in Orlando. The ARM offers a variety of networking opportunities, skill-development sessions, workshops, and presentations on emerging health services research.
