Professior of Behavioral and Community Health,  Scott Walters, PhD, will be presenting on the demography and patterns college drinking and the direction of more effective prevention and intervention programs.

 

Title: "Distilling College Drinking: Trends, Issues, and the Future of College Student Drinking"

Health Scientist, Elena Craft, PhD, will be presenting on the threat of air pollutants on Texans' health. The seminar will discuss the risk posed by benzene and butadiene, current EPA screening guidelines and their effectiveness in protecting public health.

Tuesday Interlude Resume Review Sessions

Tuesday Interlude will be conducting resume review sessions for each concentration throughout the School of Public Health. Each session will consist of resume tips and a review session.

 

Students will need to submit their resumes to Misty Smethers by 5:00 PM the day before the session at [email protected] .

TSOPHE 2011 Fall Conference 

The Texas Society for Public Health Education (TSOPHE) will be holding its 2011 Fall Conference October 13-14 at MD Anderson Cancer Center's South Campus Research Building.

Campus Bible Study


We are organizing a new Bible study group on campus and would like to invite you to join!

 

This group is open to all students, faculty and staff.

 

Currently we meet on Friday's from 4:00 pm-5:00 pm but are open to suggestions.

 

In order to become a registered student organization and to be affiliated with Intervarsity Campus Fellowship, we need at least 10 members.

 

We are studying the book of James, chapter 4 this Friday, September 16 and welcome all who are interested to join us.

HIV CENTER for Clinical and Behavioral Studies

at the New York State Psychiatric Institute and Columbia University

POSTDOC Opportunity

 

The HIV Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies (Columbia University New York) is offering a NIMH-funded postdoctoral training program, focusing on HIV, gender, and human sexuality. Trainees receive up to three years of support for stipends, health insurance, travel for conferences, and research. An application form can be found at the website.

 

One position for the training program will become available per January 2012. To be considered, be sure to send your application form no later than October 1, 2011. The deadline for positions becoming available as of July 2012 is January 2, 2012.

Division of Parasitic Diseases and Malaria, CDC

Seeking Medical Anthropology Student

 

Seeking a graduate student in medical anthropology, or combined anthropology/ medical student, interested in qualitative fieldwork in a group of fascinating Guarani communities in lowland Bolivia. Research group is currently conducting a community survey in  6 villages which includes serological testing for Chagas disease (preliminary data show a seroprevalence of >50%), stool testing for soil transmitted heminths, anemia testing and cardiac evaluations (for Chagas heart disease).

 

Research Topics of Interests:

  • Knowledge, beliefs, disease concepts and attitudes toward Chagas disease
  • Its vector (which infests the houses)
  • Control programs for hte vector which rely on indoor residual insecticide spraying
  • Attitudes toward care seeking in government health facilities
  • Alternative treatments and healers

School of Medicine of Virginia Commonwealth University

Seeking Qualitative Research Consultants

 

 Each consultant will work closely with regional Organ Procurement Organizations to conduct qualitative assessments of intensive care units (ICU) in area hospitals. The assessments utilize anthropological methods of field research, specifically direct observation and semi-structured interviews, to identify impediments to solid organ donation within hospitals ICUs. The national research study is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

  

Consultants are needed for the following areas:

 New York, NY ; Orlando, FL; St. Louis, MO; Cleveland, OH; Phoenix, AZ; Birmingham, AL 

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's in Antropology or similar social science discipline
  • Field research experience
  • Knowledge of and experience with field research design and implementation

  •  Experience working in healthcare setting (preferred)
  • Ability to travel in local area; flexible schedule
  • Knowledge of organ donation and transplantation (preferred)
