YLS Promotes Career Guidance for High School Seniors

SeguenewlogoThe United Way's Young Leaders Society of Ventura County once again renewed its commitment to attract  more young professionals to support Career Mentors America (formely know as Segue Career Path Mentors Program). Career Mentors America is a local non-profit organization serving as a link between career professionals and today's youth in the spirit of sharing knowledge and wisdom about the array of career paths and opportunities available to them for tomorrow's workforce.

The Young Leaders Society initially reached out to Segue last year in an effort to help increase the number of young professionals who would be willing to volunteer a few hours of their time in a classroom sharing their career and life experiences.

Young Leaders Society Board member Chris Collier stepped up and served as a liaison between YLS and Segue. Mr. Collier generously donated his time and energy and developed a short video for Segue which is being used today as a public awareness tool.

"Many of our youth today don't realize the competitive nature of the workplace and the difficult path that lies ahead for them. Increasing their understanding of career paths and opportunities now, will help them better prepare and know the options available to them in the future. When you think of it, how can most students possibly choose a career path when they don't even know their options."

YESLeoTreblesLast year, many of our young leaders participated with Segue and conducted presentations and spoke to many Ventura high school students about their careers and professions. The Young Leaders Society welcomes the opportunity to continue this level of support. Here are some ways you can help:

YLS Promotes United Way Programs at Rio Real School

Riorealoutreach
YLS Board Member Chris Kunke providing United Way information in Spanish to Fair Participants

On Saturday, November 14, members of the Young Leaders Society participated at the Healthy Start Fair held at the Rio Real School located in the heart of the El Rio community.

The Healthy Start Fair was developed by the Rio School District as a means of providing parents and kids with health-related resources available to them in the community they might need to improve their lives.

United Way of Ventura County has several different programs and services that are accessed by many in our community. Our community outreach efforts held this weekend focused on a couple of these resources:
  • 2-1-1: a social service line that connects people's need with help in their community. Many individuals have lost their work and with that their jobs and medical insurance. 211 can connect these individuals and families with the safety net of non-profit and community clinics where they can receive treatment at little or no cost.
  • Familywize: A prescription drug discount program accepted at major pharmacies that gives individuals an average of 30% off on their prescription drugs. "Providing crucial information about United Way programs to the community is a great way to raise public awareness and increase access to these services." stated YLS Board Member Chinh Lai.
Special thanks to Rio School District for the invitation to participate and to Chinh Lai, Chris Kunke and Pedro Chavez for spending several hours on a Saturday to help promote United Way's work to advance the common good.

NFL, UNITED WAY & MOTOWN GET MOVING THIS THANKSGIVING

UWWebbanner
Performances by Melanie Fiona, KEM, Shontelle, Forever the Sickest Kids, Vita Chambers and Hal Linton

NFL fans will be dancing in their seats at home and at Ford Field in Detroit during the 2009 United Way Thanksgiving Day Halftime Show: A Motown 50th Anniversary Tribute. The Motown tribute will take place during halftime of the first game of the NFL's Thanksgiving tripleheader when the Detroit Lions host the Green Bay Packers on Thursday, November 26 at 12:30 PM ET on FOX.

This special halftime event features six of the brightest talents from the current roster of Universal Motown Records performing classics from Motown's All-American songbook.

Bringing the unforgettable songs of Motown back to the Motor City are: MELANIE FIONA, who brings together vintage grooves in her debut album; KEM, a leader in the neo-soul movement with two gold-plus albums and two No. 1 singles; international Top 10 hit singer/songwriter SHONTELLE; and the alternative rock/electronic six-man band FOREVER THE SICKEST KIDS. The halftime show also features two newcomers: VITA CHAMBERS, who honors Motown's classic era with a mix of rock, pop, and soul, and HAL LINTON, who updates the great vocal tradition of Motown's Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder for the new century.

The halftime show set list will be taken from the golden era of Motown, the company founded by BERRY GORDY that revolutionized contemporary music in the late Fifties through Seventies with its influential fusion of pop, blues, R&B, rock and gospel elements.

Following the halftime performance, fans can visit NFL.COM/THANKSGIVING to find out how to download a copy of the halftime medley as well as music
from each of the artists. Proceeds will benefit United Way.

This is the 11th year that United Way has worked with the NFL on the Thanksgiving Halftime Show to inspire NFL fans across the country to get involved in their communities. Now in its 36th year, the United Way/NFL partnership is the longest running charitable collaboration of its kind and connects NFL PLAY 60 with
United Way's goal of 1.9 million more healthy young people by 2018.

Student United Way and the Movement to Engage A New Generation of Leaders

Throughout history, young people have led efforts to change communities and advance the common good. Today, students and young adults are key volunteers, advocates, and fundraisers in the United Way movement.  And they will be leading the way into the future.

By 2010, the generation of today's young adults - the Millennials - will be the largest in United States history.  Working together, United Way, young adults, college and university campuses, and communities LIVE UNITED.
Premier campus engagement strategies include
  • Student United Ways are student-led community change organizations on college and university campuses.
  • Student United Ways give, advocate, and volunteer to advance the common
good in the areas of Education, Income, and Health.
  • Along the way, student leaders develop a stronger connection with their community and alasting relationship with United Way.
  • Upon graduation, student leaders join an alumni network that helps them stay involved in community change for the long-term.
  • A map of Student United Ways across the country is found at www.tinyurl.com/studentuw.

United Way Alternative Spring Break (UW ASB) engages young people in a life-changing volunteer immersion experience. Through the use of new media including social networking, participants are recruited to spend their spring break serving others. This year, more than 300 young people gathered from across the country to spend spring break advancing the common good and showing what it means to LIVE UNITED. United Way Next is an e-newsletter for students, alumni, and all young
    people who LIVE UNITED.

Through the e-newsletter, young adults get monthly updates on volunteer and career opportunities, learn what others are doing to LIVE UNITED in their community, and stay connected with United Way.

To enroll young adults in the e-newsletter, send their email address to Gen Y at [email protected].

YSA, State Farm and America's Promise Alliance launch GoToServiceLearning.org

    gotoservicelogo

11/6/2009: Youth Service America, America's Promise Alliance, and State Farm Companies Foundation today unveiled an important new resource for teachers seeking to learn how to incorporate service-learning into their lessons. GoToServiceLearning.org is an interactive Web site housing a database of quality service-learning lesson plans from across the country, all tied to state academic standards. In a year where the need for volunteer service and civic engagement has received increased attention, the ability to offer all students an opportunity to combine academics and service as a way to improve their communities has never been more important. GoToServiceLearning.org makes this possibility a reality.

Service-learning is an effective teaching and learning strategy combining meaningful service to
the community with classroom content. At GoToServiceLearning.org, teachers can search service-learning lesson plans across the K-12 spectrum using parameters such as academic content, service-learning themes, and grade level.

Renowned service-learning expert and consultant Cathryn Berger Kaye, who served as primary advisor to the site's development, explains the key purpose of this new resource: "This easy-to-use Web site invites teachers to learn from the experiences of their peers and then to upload their own service-learning success stories."

Educators and politicians alike have found another vital reason to consider service-learning as an imperative for our classrooms: skyrocketing high school dropout rates. Recent research from interviews with high school dropouts showed that more than 80% of the students believed that making real world connections in school would have improved their chance for success.

GoToServiceLearning.org officially launched today at the National Middle School Association Annual Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. Kaye, along with Steve Culbertson, YSA president and CEO, and Susan Abravanel, YSA vice president of education, unveiled the Web site at the conference and promoted the importance of engaging middle school youth through service-learning as a way to increase relevance for all students and also the graduation rate.

"This new resource represents an important addition to the service-learning field," said Abravanel. "GoToServiceLearning.org will provide the teacher new to service-learning with models of exemplary practice. It's about recognizing classroom success and sharing that success with colleagues. It's about teachers supporting one another in developing real connections between community and classroom."
To find service-learning lesson plans or to upload your own, visit www.GoToServiceLearning.org
