2010 Blackhorse Association Scholarships recipients

The Blackhorse Association is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2010 Blackhorse Association Scholarships. Each recipient's university will receive $3,000 to help defray the costs of their education. The Scholarship Committee composed of Lois Hurt (Houston, Texas), Dick Leibert (Houston, Texas), Ernie Ford (North Pole, Alaska) and Pete Walter (Mount Holly, New Jersey) recommended the following ten (10) applicants to Blackhorse Association President John Sherman Crow, (Thibodaux, Louisiana) as deserving of the 2010 award: Aaron Cook, Portage, Michigan, son of Edward Cook, (1969-1970) Amber Burns, Zephyr Hills, Florida, daughter of James T. Burns, Jr., (1968-1969) Raegan Maxwell, Auburn, Alabama, daughter of Johnny Maxwell, (1981-1983) Brandon Paton, Tampa, Florida, son of Daniel Paton (2005-2006) Joseph Stromberg, Sterling, Kansas, son of Mac Stromberg, (1970-1971) Kristina Graham, Ann Arbor, Michigan, daughter of Richard Graham, (1967-1968) Denisha Teague, Seattle, Washington, daughter of Dennis Teague, (1965-1968) Matt McKelvey, Shelbyville, Tennessee, son of Jack McKelvey, (1970-1971) Colby Dillard, Triangle, Virginia, duaghter of Michael Dillard (1997-1999) Heather Martinez, El Paso, Texas, daughter of William Thompson (2007-2009) These young Americans are the children of Blackhorse Troopers whose service to their country and Regiment spans 45 years from 1965 to the present day. Three of their fathers received the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in combat, two were awarded the Bronze Star for Valor and one was awarded the Silver Star. The recipients themselves have varied interests from dance and acting to writing and sports. All volunteered time in their community or church and one is himself a wounded and decorated combat veteran of the United States Army. This has been an outstanding group and we were all impressed with their credentials and aspirations. We wish you all "Good Luck" in your future endeavors! I want to extend my sincere thanks to Lois, Dick and Ernie for the great work they have done with this Committee and my personal thanks and appreciation to John Sherman Crow for his leadership, patience and guidance throughout.
